  • Maybe I'm being lazy, but what image specs are required for this size canvas? I know you can stack pano shots but the BigW site doesn't list anything

For mine I blew things up to about 6000 horizontal pixels worth of real data (merged multiple images into a panorama) and it accepted and printed it out OK. I'd say aim for 150-200dpi as a base, although the fact that the canvas has a texture does mean you'll never get pin sharp.

Oh, and make sure you allow for the border. A good percentage of your image will end up on the sides and wrapped around to the back to be fixed. Don't put your uncle on the extreme edge (unless you don't like him).

Got to pull together another print myself…

Hard to say, but you want a pretty decent res for something a metre long. However, it is canvas, so it's quite forgiving of a lower quality image because it's hard to see detail, but I wouldn't go using an image you snapped with your iphone.

Big W will warn you if you upload an image they judge to be too low res for the size.

    • Unless you have a fairly good camera might be best to make a collage.

    • The web based software down samples your images.

I uploaded a panorama I took inside the grand canyon it was a 80,000 x 6,500 (approximately) pixel image, 30MB JPG.

They downs sampled it to 4000x1711 for my 20" x 40" print.

I'd still upload a large file than needed to ensure the down sampling has something to work with, but maybe not the degree I did.

Also note the comments below about needing ensure an adequate border around your image, to ensure he majority of the image is on the front of the canvas print.

I left the untrimmed edges of the panorama, so have printing on 3 out of the 4 of the sides at least. Not that anyone has commented on that.

Any idea how long the sale is on for?

EDIT: Sorry, just saw the date in bold above ;) Cheers CT!

If you're using the online system, midnight 6th is when you need your order finalised (paid for).

Otherwise when Big W closes on the 6th if you're doing it in-store. prints will not be done in-store though, they're done somewhere else (in Australia according to the markings on the back of the canvas).

And just watch the time - not necessarily midnight your local time, think it is based off Sydney time.

Got caught out by this during daylight savings once.

This might actually fit a scaled picture of my d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-inosor picture I made in Illustrator.

  • Anyone know where to find a beach view photo online? Thanks

    • That's right, anyone want to link us to some websites with high quality res for feature wall prints? :)

    • +8

Do a Google image search for whatever you want, then go up to 'Search Tools' then goto 'Size' and select 'Larger then 4MP'. Here are the 4MP+ results for 'beach': https://www.google.com.au/search?q=beach+image&espv=2&source…

Alternatively, if you have a spare $177 you could make your own triptych by downloading a large image, dividing it up into three separate images then print each image on its own 100x50 canvas. Here's a finished example of an oil painting: http://images.fineartamerica.com/images-medium-large/curly-t… and another of a photograph: http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0072/7502/products/7946_1.j…

      • Thanks

      • What about the ratio, 4mb is like 3000x2000, pretty sure thats 4:3.. won't it come out looking stretched?

        • 'Larger than 4MP' is the key :) Doesn't have to be 4MP and doesn't have to be 4:3 ratio!

        • @SteveAndBelle:

No, my point is, you wouldnt want it to be 4:3.

Or if you have/can create some nice high res images, you can do like these 4 self-absorbed New Yorkers : http://i.imgur.com/jBVKquA.jpg

    • Reference to a website with high res seascape images would be appreciated if anyone can help please.

    • +2

Have a look at r/earthporn on Reddit. The photos there are generally high res and loads of interesting pics posted every day

      Edit: http://www.reddit.com/r/EarthPorn/

      • Personally I like DeviantArt when it comes to looking for nice artwork, though it may take some time to find a photo offering a high-resolution download:

I might use the deal to finally print the sunset panorama I made a while ago in Oregon, USA (13 photos wide HDR).

you have to have the pic ready to print? or can you buy now and do the picture later?

      good work Scoobth. thanks mate.

Wow just realised that this includes the frame and the stapling onto the frame- I've seen some shops which are only advertising printing price!

From looking at the deal closer, it seems only panoramic/wide sizes are on sale?

    • +2

Yep, this is the full canvas print, mounted and streched around a sturdy wooden frame. I have a bunch of them and they look great.

Yes, only the panoramic / wide ones are on sale. This page lists all of them: http://www.bigwphotos.com.au/category/canvas-wall-decor/pers…

      • So are these best suited for panoramic captures?

      • +2

Can you snap a quick photo of one (if not too personal) so I can see how big it is / how the finished product looks on your wall?

      • You can do a panorama … but just as easy to use three large photos and hang vertical or horizontal. The software is pretty clunky but you can put plain (or fancy) borders around the images as well. We put three photos on ours and they are great. One of the photos was from an iPhone 5 and it was excellent. Great deal, we just need more wall space :-)

        • +1

The online app is much better than the iPhone one but one thing I wasn't sure about is whether to go for multi photos printed on one canvas or not…

The shadow frame ones look nice too- was tempted but I think they'd look similar to framing my own photo whereas a pure canvas on frame would be different. Has anyone tried these?

  • I uploaded an image 16890 x 5067 in resolution, however after looking at the image on the Big W site under My Photos the resolution is only 4000 x 1200. It says my picture is only suited for postcards and small things. What gives?

I selected the large canvas size when uploading.

  • +2

I've been very happy with the quality of the canvases I've purchased through Big W. Just wish I had more walls to hang stuff on, I've run out of room!

  • would this be suitable for reproductions of famous paintings?

e.g. something like The Great Wave

    • Whoa, massive coincidence! I literally just finished my order of four canvases including one featuring The Great Wave :) Creepy!

      • Seriously?? I wonder if those woodblock prints will look good on canvas or not. What other images did you use?

Where did you get the high resolution source images?

        • +1

Refer to my instructions above and just find them online. I didn't use this particular one but I just found this version of 'The Great Wave' in a good enough resolution: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0d/Great_Wav…

You'll obviously need to do a bit of basic cropping before you throw it into the BigW image tool and make it look its best for the 50x100 canvas but it should look fine.

My other three canvases were a triptych I made from slicing up a hi-res download of another artwork. These will be my first canvases so fingers crossed they all come out OK.

  • For those that want a bit more time to choose an image to print onto canvas, I note that Scoopon has the 100x50cm through Fabness today for $49.00 + $9.95ph. You then have a few weeks to use the voucher before it expires.

    • I have had some really bad prints come back from Fabness.
Spent a lot of money to purchase high res images from iStock.
Prints came back with a very blue (cyan!) cast to them.

The bullshit I went through with them was crazy, in the end I just gave up!

That's the advantage of dealing with a physical store.

My experience with Big W (fiji film) has always been good.

Received mine today. Wow, they're about as perfect as you'd want! Couldn't recommend this more. Thanks again CT!

    • No worries, glad you like.

I personally think they look teriffic for the money.

BTW, your username always reminds me of these guys

      • Bingo, you win the prize! Yes, my username is strongly based on those good ol' Scottish shoe-gazers :)

Thanks for the link too. Not one of my favourite tracks of theirs but enough to make me want go back through my B&S collection while hanging these canvases over the weekend :)
