Good deal and it's the 32GB version which is even better (since Nexus has no SD Card slot).

Makes the $100 Chinese cheapo tablets a bit of a joke.

However this is an old tablet, over 2 years old technology. So, for a "state of the art" experience you'd be better with the Nexus 7 2013 (second generation), however that is more than twice the price of this.

I have a 2012 Nexus 7 and don't feel any compulsion whatsoever to upgrade to a newer 7" tablet. Some time ago now tablet/phone performance reached the point where I just stopped caring about newer models.

      • My 2012 nexus 7 is a bit buggy tho, all of which i'm sure is caused by kitkat. i've tried factory resets, but every now and then the touch screen goes crazy, or the device goes app mad (opening and closing random apps quickly), or just very slow and sluggish.
I (like u) feel it does all I need it to do (when it works), it's just the bugs are annoying which seem fairly frequent.

        • You have a nexus device, try one of the countless custom ROMs.

  • any deals of 2013 version refurb nexus 7?

    • +1

I will get one if they have a 2013 32Gb model for <$150.

      • That's what I'm waiting for too!

  • I had the 16gb bought for about this much a year ago. Its ok for the price, I'd hold out for the new one as the old cpu was a little slow.

Happened to pick up the ipad Mini through the Kogan / ebay 1/2 year sale for $200, really nice bit of kit for that price.

    • Is that the first gen Mini? Would the firt gen Nexus 7 not be of similar if not better performance CPU wise?

  • after a cheap tablet which I'll pretty much dedicate to controlling my chromecast + basic browsing (it will live in that room). do people recommend I jump on this or wait for a bit longer just to 'future proof' it even slightly more?

    • +3

If it's only for chromecast and basic surfing this is a great tablet to have. I use this for my kids' games too and it's plenty of power for even that. No need for a more "future" tablet.

    • I probably wouldn't spend 129 for cheap browsing or a dedicated use, maybe I am just more bargain than Oz, but this is great tablet for a great price.

I picked up the Kudo 7s from Big W for 79 which if you aren't good at maths is 50 less, for a child it's great as it comes with 40 apps (not sure how many are paid) and is preset for kids and parents to use with separate profiles so you don't have to worry about kids getting on porn sites etc. Not sure if they still have them at that price, is is a dual core but for those pulses no big deal, only downside is that I am pretty sure it has a plastic screen

      • I have a first gen Nexus 7 running stock 4.4.4, and if you do a Factory data reset every now and again, personally I think it runs fine for the usual tasks. For the average person wanting a good solid tablet that supposedly will still get the next major Android L update ( kinda future proof ), this represents great value. I have not read the fine print on the warranty for this listing, but just keep in mind that you usually only get 6 months on the non regular user replaceable battery.
Edit: Below comes sum it up well too :-)

        • Wtf are you doing that would fall outside "the usual tasks"?

xda developers always have stuff for this tablet…..for a cheap browsing or ereader toy…$129 is a bargain…..i got 2 of these and never had any dramas and ota updates are still coming through…also i got one of them overclocked at 1.5ghz and runs sweet…with the 2013 model i'll keep eye for any bargain ones floating round.

this makes ideal pressy for first time tablets eg mum/dad/nan/pop etc

$110 for the 16GB is a bargain for those that don't need all that storage.

$19 extra for double the storage space is a better bargain, IMHO.

  • Nice. Tempted!!!

Nice find! I hope you get many up votes for this.

    • Got one
      Thx

Definitely a bargain at this price with manufacturers warranty. It is quite old, but definitely a bargain over buying an ebook reader, or low enough to consider buying one for a child. We already have 3 in our house, but at this price and warranty would almost consider buying another.

  • +2

you may say its old but the battery lasts a long time and it has enough power for new games and is still very quick and has just had a update to a new android, beats any cheap chinese junk.

  • would this be better then the samsung galaxy 3 kids thats on sale on ebay for $120? (for a 8 year old for travel and occassionally a little one who will prob enjoy it for 5minutes)

Or should i wait for another epic ipad mini deal lol

  • would I be able to load xbmc on this nexus and then connect to my tv???

    • I don't think Nexus support MHL sorry. Maybe a chromecast might work for you

      • Update was just reading and nexus 7 supports Slimport - I hadn't heard of it before - , so I will reply yes it can be connected to tv

        • Slimport is supported only from Nexus 2013, this is 2012. You can't get video out.
          http://www.kanexlive.com/slimport

Also I hate this model to be frank, I think the build quality is shitty. I had 2 of them and once replaced the screen too, which again broke.

It often has touch issues, if screen breaks you can't replace just the screen (full assembly costs $100+ and the cheap Chinese replacement breaks at first drop itself). If you drain battery completely you have to charge and reset the device, else it wont start up! Also 7" is kinda useless size, go for 8" if you want mobility, else 10"..

  • For this amount you could also try ipad 2, not siding with apple, it's just a suggestion.

  • Nothing compared to memopadhd7 for $99 but $129 for what it does, not bad. May not even be real refurbished units when retailers sell in bulk like that.

  • I use my nexus 7 2012 everyday and it's great for reading ebooks and watching videos. However, there are two major annoying issues that need to be aware of.

    1. TRIM will not work on its data partition if it is encrypted due to an older kernel
    2. Since upgrading to 4.4.3(and 4.4.4), my tablet becomes barely usable because the wifi cannot be activated every time it comes out of sleep. The only solution is to power cycle, which is surely unacceptable.

Therefore I keep my nexus 7 in 4.4.2 and unencrypted. According to discussion on various online forums, I'm not alone. There are other people seeing problems even from the first version of KitKat so I still consider myself lucky.

It is still a good tablet in general and I enjoy using it during daily commute, but just bear in mind that you may encounter some unique issues and Google's further support should not relied upon at all.

  • I loved this tablet. I would still have mine if I didnt crack the screen from slamming closed the glovebox it was in.

  • Bought it at $120 many thanks

  • All gone at this price.

  • 199 now…

  • I dropped my 1st gen and screen can't be used. Is it worth repairing if it can be? What would be a good 5.5-6 inch phone to get that's not too exp
