QNIX 27" 2560x1440 PLS Computer Monitor ~AU $320

650

27" 1440p matte monitor. Great reviews of it and it's relatively cheap. 8ms response time @ 60Hz but can be overclocked to 96Hz and even up to 120Hz.

Only supports DVI inputs (*1) please ensure that your graphics card supports it as it doesn't have HDMI or VGA inputs.

As seen on /r/buildapcsales a few days ago. It's my first post so please be gentle.

Edit: I bought it on the 8th and it arrived on the 14th to Perth! The box came in as new condition and I'm yet to test out the display.

      You clearly have no idea.

        • +6

Don't think that's possible with an IPS/PLS panel

        • -6

          @jzdhgkd:

Oh i see it's a PLS panel. All good then.

        • @hollykryten: It's a PLS panel as according to the description, which is according to this "IPS-like in character and performance".

In any case they're both completely different to TN panels which seems to me would be better for your type of gaming/media.

    • It is in the world of Korean QuadHD monitors.

    • Where did you get the impression this was a 3D panel?

      • -5

lol i mistook this for 3D panel. Thought it said gaming in 3D :(

8ms response time allows user to enjoy 3D games or action movies without afterimage
        in a clearer image.

        • +1

TBH, 3D is a novelty thing, IMO. Also, if you're gaming with NVIDIA, they more than likely wont support this monitor

        • @Divitini:

I was about to ask that question.
I have an nvidia 3d kit that came with my 3d laptop that is sitting there doing nothing, was thinking this might be a way to do some 3d gaming on the cheap.

Oh well, it can keep sitting there.

  • Seems like a bargain to me! Anyone had good/bad experiences with ONIX?

My onix once attacked itself when it was confused, which was a bit annoying.

Mine dug itself underground and i have not seen it since :(

    • I had one of these cheap Korean 27" IPS panels.. heaps of discussions around… the stand looks the same as the one I had but mine was a different "brand".. LSS.. it died after only 13 months..

    • Was lucky with no dead pixels and loving the monitor atm

  • Only supports DVI inputs (*1) please ensure that your graphics card support it as it doesn't have HDMI or VGA inputs.

Sister has the same problem with her monitor from dell

Ended up paying $40 for a HDMI to DVI cable from fishpond. Her PC only outputted the ultra HD via HDMI.

      • -7

        Find me one cheaper

        • +13

I bought a DVI to HDMI Adapter for $2.75 and plugged a $3 HDMI cable into it.

Cheapest connector at the moment on eBay in Australia is 4.95

Edit: Also, the fact that this monitor is DVI only is actually a plus as this happens to be the model which supports overclocking. The DVI/HDMI/DisplayPort/Dsub model does not. It will allow you to set a higher refresh, but it actually drops the frames so you won't really be seeing any improvement.

          lol schooled….

Thats HDMI 3. It does not support anything above 1080p

        • What is HDMI 3?

        • Sorry I meant HDMI 1.3

        • +4

There is actually no such thing as a HDMI 1.3 cable (or 1.4 or 2.0 for that matter).

Only Standard (720p/1080i) and High Speed (1080p/2160p/3D) as well as versions of each with an Ethernet Channel.

The HDMI versions are to do with device specifications, not cables.

Edit: Some articles talking about HDMI cables.

Why all HDMI cables are the same

Why all HDMI cables are the same, part 2

Still more reasons why all HDMI cable are the same

          4K HDMI cables (are nonsense)

QNIX have been selling on ebay for ages. Their panels are really well regarded, for those interested in high res high hz gaming. See blurbusters.com for heaps of information.

The seller, greensum, is similarly well regarded. With the usual caveats of buying from overseas for returns and such.

The DVI only thing can be overcome with a $5 adapter, if need be.

    • +3

Also to add, almost 2,000 pages of discussion here in just over a year: http://www.overclock.net/t/1384767/official-the-qnix-x-star-…

      Plenty of information.

    • It's a bargain. But what about mains power does this monitor use an AC/DC adapter or does the power cable connect directly to it. If so can this monitor take a 240V power source. That is the question. It would be alright if it has a universal power supply built into it.

      • I have a QNIX 27 at work and a 30inch crossover (both ebay IPS) and they both use ac / dc adaptors.

    • -3

The DVI thing needs an active converter so it's like $30-$80

      • Why would it need a convertor, they are both digital signals.
It it were VGA - HDMI then that would be different.

  • +7

I bought this EXACT item during the ebay 15% off sale however the one I bought costed more because mine was pixel perfect (0-1 dead pixels).

The stand is utterly atrocious on this. You can't adjust it, it wobbles, your monitor is tilted (even when on a flat surface), and it is in fact completely unsafe to leave it on the stand because it will fall over! Do not use the default stand!

The screen is brilliant though, as good as my mid-range Dell U2412M 24", but bigger. no qualms with the screen at all, it looks great.

More info on these korean monitors which are actually just the same panels as Apple cinema or Dell ultrasharp displays http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2173172

Best then get one of these monitor stands from OW.

      http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/brateck-singl…

Or if you fancy using two of these monitors in a dual arrangement.

      http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/brateck-13-27…

      • To replace the stand you need to remove the bezel, unplug the panel and unscrew the stand from inside the case. Yes, the VESA mount will just screw to the outside.

        • Yes and no. I have two on a dual stand. I didn't bother going through all of that, just took the flat foot of the stand off. The short stubby mount isn't in the way or an eyesore.

WRT to replacing the nasty stands they come with, the only annoyance was the vesa screw holes are shallow on the qnix. You need to use some washers for standard vesa screws to be usable.

          I used this stand: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/121120979346

          Dual for $55… bargain.

    • I got myself an X-Star Matte from dream-seller the same day. Not a pixel-perfect one but its got perfect pixels anyway! Managed to overclock it to 115HZ in two minutes. The stand is not too bad. No better or worse than any other stock monitor stand. I did however buy an Ergotron LX Desk mount on the same day. Received that yesterday and will put that on tomorrow or the weekend.

    • Same, I purchased this exact same screen last year
I also purchased the pixel perfect too

      Cons:
      -Terrible Stand (get a mount)
-Had to calibrate myself (Red, Green & Blue.. but quite easy)

    • Check that the screw under the stand has been done up tight. I bought one at the same time (X-Star model, same stand though I think) and mine wobbled around but I found that the screw that attaches the base had come loose while I was setting it up and needed tightening.

The stand is still pretty poor but there is certainly no fear of it falling over.

Here is the obvious warning about not buying local. My experience; I bought 2 similar models monitors (Shimian 27" 1440p, and with more inputs, ebay from Korea) and one developed a 10cm wide white strip down the middle. The warranty process is a pain in the poop shoot, in the end I lost out. The remaining one has what can only be called 'blotches' where the colours are slightly off from the rest and appear as a brighter patch when a black image is displayed (although I am told these are fairly common for IPS screens). The front bezel is also falling off.

I recently bought 2 Dell 27" (only 1080p) screens to replace them at $230 each. Far better build quality and better panel colour (I also prefer the resolution). I can't comment on these Qnix brand but I would in general recommend buying local and name brand.

    Just my 2c

    • Where on earth did you get 2 27" Dell monitors for $230 each? I'd happily pay $300 for 1 and take it as a deal.

      • +4

probably from the dell ebay store with that 20% off coupon, it's also 'only' 1080p.

        • That is correct, it was a deal I just couldn't let pass.

    • +3

Amusing that people feel the need to neg you for providing your experience and a relevant caveat emptor. Such defensiveness. Calm down people.

      • Thanks, I'm not sure what the cause for the negs are. It was simply a comment on a similar product from the same location (probably the same factory). The screen I received had an LG panel in it. For what it's worth here is a listing for the exact model I had.

        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/190715485923

    • My shimian hasn't missed a beat so sounds like either I was lucky or you are very unlucky.
So super slim and sexy… I wouldn't hesitate to get one again.

  • These have been around this price for the last year or so.

  • Got mine from BCC, pixel perfect version and paid $400
Super dooper happy with mine (I have dual monitor stand mind you - the one it comes with is beyond horrible)

  • I've been using this monitor for 6 months and it's fantastic, not a single issue with it so far. This model should support overclocking too.

    • Overclocking… a monitor?

      • Yeah sounds gimmicky

        • The overclocking of these panels is their whole reason for existing, otherwise they'd just be cheap panels not worth a second look. 1440p at 120hz is a thing of beauty.

    • This model generally has a good chance of reaching 90Hz or more (mine can do 110hz). It's default is 60hz. That doesn't mean it's as good as a 120hz gaming monitor but there is a considerable difference especially in games.

  • +1

paid $330 last month from ebay. Now I can never go back to 1080p. The colours are fantastic on the PLS panel. Mine came with no dead pixels/backlight bleeding. Overclocked nicely to 96Hz (can go 120). Just so everyone knows, these usually have only one input and thats a dual link DVI.
Here is a fun website to see your monitors refresh rate:
    http://www.testufo.com/#test=frameskipping

  • Had this monitor for around a year now and it's absolutely brilliant. Paid around $320 back then too, well worth the money! Haven't had an issue with mine in the slightest and I haven't noticed anything wrong with the stand (but it's fair to say the stand isn't that crash hot, might be worth replacing for you).

  • +1

TIL that you can overclock a monitor…

  • Have one also, its a great monitor, got mine for $300 delivered by making an offer to one of the sellers who had a "make an offer" enabled listing on ebay.

  • +1

As I understand it and as already pointed out these monitors are exceptionally well regarded when it comes to image quality and gaming.

  • Is this an upgrade vs Dell U2711 from 2009?

    • +1

Nope, same kind of screen as the Dell but worse in every other regard. (input options, build quality, etc.)

  • This guy seems very keen on his, despite it being delivered with 1 dead pixel. I'm going to pass, as I can't live with shinny (semi chunky) bezels.

These monitors require a Dual Link DVI-D capable graphics card and won't work with consoles or onboard graphics. Adapters won't work either, they don't do their own processing and are completely reliant on the graphics card so only a compatible card will work.

You are buying a screen that Samsung sell for $600+ so you can expect a beautiful picture with absolutely no frills

  • These are pretty good for the price. I had a bad experieince with another seller (cracked panel and bright pixels). The damage was barly visible because the resolution is soo high. They also have high amounts of backlight bleed around the bezel, which you can reduce by loosening the bezel screws slightly.

Green-sum (this seller) was excellent when I bought a different monitor from them.

I also found that the QX2710's go dark and blury when overclocked unlike the Q270's, but they are $170 more and have their own flaws.

  • You can get the TRUE10 which is the better model from QNIX, it has a HDMI input as well as dual link DVI-D for ~$350 off ebay. I don't think it is the matte version though and it uses a different panel, but it has slightly better response times etc. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/QNIX-QX2710-LED-Evolution-II-Mult…

Does anyone know if all the QNIX monitors are overclockable?

    • Only single input models are overclockable. So if it comes with HDMI or display port it won't overclock, only this model with the dual link DVI.

Edit: The model you posted says its can be overclocked though, maybe it's changed. I'm going by the research I did about 6 months ago.

    • The one from your link doesn't support true overclocking. The seller is either misinformed or lying.

      Edit:

There have also been countless people who have proven that the bypass models (qnix qx2710, xstar dp2710, yamasaki catleap 2b and overlord tempestOC) that have single inputs ALL display true 120hz without dropping frames. The ones that drop frames are the displayport or multi-input models that have a different PCB and a scaler. Also, it has nothing to do with the "circuitry" not being fast enough, that's absurd. It's because even if you're using the DVI connection and not one of the extra inputs, and if you're running in native resolution (not using the scaler) there is still processing being done on the signal. That processing, however minor, is long enough that the PCB can't keep up with a 120hz refresh rate…which is why the single input, no scaler models can reach true 120hz speeds.
      source

AnandTech review for the multi-input model also shows that overclocking doesn't work.

  • Ive owned Onix and X-Star….

Both fantastic monitors for the price!

Both piece of crap stands/bases with minimal adjustments.

    • But this is Qnix not Onix.

  • This is a good deal- but nothing out of the ordinary? Or are these overclockable models normally more?

  • -1

If you just want a computer monitor and don't intend to do much gaming or tv/video watching I would recommend this monitor instead- https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/152338

    • Sure. Except that costs $305.35 more, shipping is a killer. Heck you could nearly buy two of these QNIX monitors for that price. Also that's not really designed specifically as a monitor it's primarily a television set. The QNIX 27" is designed for the specific use as a computer monitor that's the reason why it does have DVI.

So basically you were comparing a television set to a real computer monitor.

      • The Seiki may be labeled as a "TV" but nobody buys it to use as a TV, it is much better as a computer monitor (it's only 30hz when used at 4k resolution).

I am actually using both the seiki and the qnix right now, I use the seiki as my main monitor and the qnix as my secondary monitor in portrait mode.

        • How far do you sit from your Seiki if it is 50"?

        • @wildstone:

I only have the 39-Inch version of the Seiki because when I bought it amazon wouldn't ship the 50" version to Australia. I would have bought the 50" version if it was available at the time. I sit probably about 40cm from the 39" and it is fine.

  • I may be blind to the deal but can someone double check to make sure I'm not crazy, or has the price dropped to $308.09 AUD? Slightly better deal than the OP one. But feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, or somehow misread it.

    • +1

      05/07 - 07/07 US $279
      07/07 - 11/07 US $299
      11/07 - 14/07 US $329
      Current Price US $289

They appear to be adjusting the prices every few days.

      • Pity it wasn't from Amazon, you could have hit them up for a pricing difference refund. But alas is from ebay seller so can't do any thing about it.

        • Now it's dropped to US $279 again :)

        • @kamoi:

Wonder if those who bought it just 4 or 5 days ago when it was at $299 USD might feel slightly ripped off right now?. These prices fluctuate worse than Amazon.
