A Base Level Telescope on Special with Free Shipping for $79 from Kogan

20

Hi guys,
if you are interested in astronomy, here is a beginner level telescope. I know there are a lot of videos on youtube producing very detailed images of stars, planets and nebulas clicked by Hubble telescope, which are not possible with this telescope. Watching them with your own telescope is a different kind of joy, especially for the kids. For $79 with free shipping seems like a bargain to me.
Copied below is the description of the product as shown on seller's website.

"Discovering the intricacies and wonders of outer space can be a fascinating and mind-blowing experience for adults and children alike. Who could fail to marvel at the belts and moons of Jupiter, the craters of the Moon or the rings of Saturn?

Amazing magnification

The Refractor Telescope (700mm x 70mm) is a great way to begin your journey of discovery! With up to 525x magnification you can see bright, clear images of the Moon and planets that can be gazed at and studied for hours! Alternatively point out to sea or across land for an amazing view of your surroundings.

Laser finder scope helps you hone in on your target!

With the included range of eyepieces and lenses of varying levels of magnification you’ll be able to hone in on earthly objects as close as 100m as well as planetary “gas giants” as far as 1 billion km away!

Locating your target is made simple with the laser finder scope, which uses a green laser to show where your telescope is pointing. Simply match the green dot to the object you wish to view. You can then make vertical micro adjustments with the slow motion control rods to focus on exactly the right part of the sky.

Easy to use and travel with

This telescope is easy to set up and use — start your star gazing almost immediately! With a collapsible tripod and slow motion control rod for easy micro-adjustment, transport and positioning is simple — you’ll be free to roam the country looking for the best spot to settle down and turn your gaze upward.

The perfect gift for any budding astronomer, the Refractor Telescope is sure to be a fast favourite with the whole family!

Just remember, you get what you pay for and $79 is not a lot of money.

Also, it says that there is no mount in the box. An absolutely necessary component.

    • I cannot believe this has not been +ed more.

The bloody thing does not have a mount. It is completely useless without it.

If you want to check out some planets, the moon and other great things in the sky PLEASE DON'T BUY THIS it will put you off. It might seem like a base level scope but it isn't it's junk.

Something like this is bound to have a wobbly tripod, poor optics and looking at anything through this thing at X525 will be blurry garbage!

For the same money buy some nice binoculars, you'll see a lot more, brighter and clearer, even the moons of Jupiter and some nubula.

    Don't take my word for it, have a quite look at these links and save yourself some heartache, or just Google "telescope buying guide";

P.S. If you still thought 'oh stuff it, whats $79', then buy this - http://www.ozscopes.com.au/celestron-firstscope-telescope-of…

    • Good advice! I will rely to it.

    • Thanks for the advice!

525x magnification… Now that is a good joke.
In theory you can stack lenses and get 100000000000 magnification… In theory…

In reality maximum useful magnification is aperture in inches x 60, about 150x in this case. Then add the effect of cheap lenses and glass… Even 100x would an overestimate.

What will you able to see:
    Moon, very well.
Planets as tiny blobs. Don't expect to see any details. Rings of Saturn will be visible.

A bit of fuzziness for the brightest deep sky objects provided you have a very dark sky.

    Neighbours very well.

    That's it.

Thanks, bought! I've always wanted to see the moon.

So it's good for spying on neighbours while pretending to look at stars…

      SOLD!

      • I think that you will see your neighbours upside down with this telescope. Best are binoculars say 50 x 20.

  • Laser finder scope? Doesn't that make it illegal unless you are a registered astronomer (in which case you would not be using this crap)?

if you are going to buy something cheap. get this tabletop telescope. its a bit silly but very powerful and will give you a real taste of astronomy.

buying a proper telescope requires around 300 bucks, and dedication. dont bother with these products

if you're set on a tripod entry level

http://www.ozscopes.com.au/refractor-telescope-saxon-607az.h… this one for 120 and will be probably 5 times better.

    • You discount the Kogan 70mm and recommend a 60mm with an equally horrible mount for $50 more? How is a 60mm Telescope 5x better than the 70mm Kogan one? Between the 2, the Kogan would probably better value if you really had to pick one.

      • I've heard it's not so much how big it is, it's how you use it.

      • quality of lens

i can't promise, but i'm sure kogan will cause aberrations
and the tripod is so important. you get a crap tripod, it will be frustration of your life

If size isn't too much of an issue, I would recommend using for a starter scope, an 8 inch dobsonian telescope. An 8 inch dob is very very decent sized scope.

Andrews communications run at around 300 for a GSO.

This is a better setup for the moon and nebulae, clusters and galaxies. Dobs aren't that crash hot for planets.

  • Might get a couple to support my tomato bushes this coming summer… Thanks for posting.

I've heard, that if you position this really carefully, that if you focus on what appears to be a tiny spec way off in the distance, you might just be able to see the Kogan Customer Service "Department".

I've never seen any evidence that it exists, but my dad once knew a guy who had some people staying with him who knew of a guy who once was able to get through to them. So I do reckon it exists!

  • lol. This sounds like Kogan posting their own products. A 60mm Telescope is a complete waste of money. Get at least a 4" Telescope

    http://www.opticscentral.com.au/celestron-astromaster-114eq-…

or as the others have suggested, a 6-8" Dob.
