D-Link 880L Dual Band AC1900 Router $149 (after $50 cashback) + Free Postage @ Wireless1

70
NFY15

Got this ADSL2+ one last week for the bro's place and happy to report works brilliantly. I have cable so was waiting for a good straight up router and came across this one, which is even faster at AC1900.

Wireless 1 is selling at $259 plus ~$9 to $15 postage. After applying code NFY15 price comes to $199 and postage is free. D-link is giving $50 cashback on this model so price comes down to $149! This is the best price I have seen for a top of the line AC1900 router and should future proof my network for the next few years.

Usual searches on staticice etc show the cheapest to be M-Wave at $259. Cheapest on eBay is $227 and probably no cashback.

Going in blind on this one as not many reviews out there atm given this is a pretty new unit, but some interesting discussions on whirlpool and unboxing/firmware walkthrough on d-link forum. Also new firmware just came out Tuesday in response to some minor issues raised on whirlpool so looking good! Unfortunately, SmallNetBuilder will be testing this one in a few weeks so no solid performance numbers out there for me. End user reviews online all seem positive so should be good.

Will be using this in a mixed mac and windows enviro with about 25 wireless clients and will use the USB3 to share HD videos - will report back on my experience.

Pity no dongle included. The price of these is what is discouraging me from investing in an AC router.

  • I know nothing about these things.
We have a 2 year old Telstra router that is randomly powering off since yesterday afternoon and I'm going to look into buying a new router.
We only have adsl 1 with a 7mb connection speed on average and we use wifi in various parts of the house on multiple devices.

What should I be looking for as far as specs go and is this one suitable?

    Thanks very much.

    • This may be overkill. You should probably look for a cheap dual band 'n' modem router. (or just single band 2.4Ghz if for internet only). The modem router I got from "Belong" (Telstra) has horribly low sync speed compared to my ancient netgear modem router, so stay away from Telstra hardware.
You need an adsl modem router, BTW. This deal is a router only.
Check MSY for cheap modem routers.

i still reckon AC is overkill for 90% of people

a good 450/450 dual band gigabit router is fine

    • Why is it overkill? I got like 8 wireless device connected to my optus router at night. Will an AC help?

only if your devices are compatible with AC

And you need high bandwidth. Nothing to do with number of devices.

        • @Make it so:
don't you know the bandwidth is shared?

        • @leetec: I just meant that there is no constraint on the number of devices. Of course your total bandwidth across devices should not exceed it, but 200mbps concurrently per device is fairly extreme.

    • Necessary if you want to get anywhere near the full speed of 100Mbps NBN connection over Wi-Fi though.

  • Will this work on ADSL2+

This is a router, not a modem. You would need a separate modem

  • Hi guys,
I plan to get this one or Netgear Nighthawk AC1900.
I'm currently using Netgear DG834Gv4. I want to turn this into modem mode.
    Or I should get a TP-Link 8960N V4 for modem ?

    • Price looks fairly good for the dlink if you consider that cash back. Reading comments it seems the dlink is of reference design so should in theory perform similar to other routers in that range. The difference I guess is the firmware.
