    Some of these courses are utterly hilarious.

    Excuse me while I learn how to be a step mum, while solving a rubik's cube, being productive on a Mac, forming better relationships and penetrating something. That whole time, I'll be making millions while buying and selling domain names.

      Yes, yes. But you'll be ethically penetrating something.

      Cubing is awesome. Always has been and always will be. And with the great cheap Chinese cubes you can buy these days (make sure you do your research, because some aren't so great), it's an easily affordable past time.

        I'll bet you're the life of the party. Guess what everyone? Daabido is coming Friday to the party. And he's bringing his CUBE! Lookout!

      Step 1. Buy a good cube. There are plenty of great ones around, depending on your budget (from $5 to $35). Despite what you might think, Rubik brand cubes aren't the best value or the best performing in the "speed cubing" scene. As there is no patent on the Rubik's cube, a whole bunch of companies have sprung up with their own designs. One cube is never enough and because they are so cheap (they make good presents for kids, they love them) you can afford to buy lots.

      I buy my cubes from cubezz.com There are a bunch of websites you can buy from but I've found cubezz to be the fastest shipper from Hong Kong and also the cheapest, as well as shipping in boxes to keep your precious cheap cube in good condition. The cheapest ones I would recommend are the

      ShengShou Aurora at about $5
      MoYu WeiLong Version II for about $8
      DaYan Zhanchi for about $10
      YJ MoYu AoLong for about $13 (particularly nice straight out of the box before modding).

      You can then start modding with a variety of lubes (you won't need your lube for anything else - see step 2)

      Traxxas DiffLube 50k weight off eBay for about $10 (only a couple of drops are required otherwise your cube will go gummy (YouTube tutorials are your friend - because you won't have any other friends by this stage)

      or buy a prelubed puzzle from lubixcube.com where they take the above cubes and a whole lot more, take them apart, sand and smooth all the edges, lube the core and corners, reassemble and replace the stickers with their own "half bright" stickers which are very nice. I suggest starting off with one from cubezz and then ask for one from lubixcube for your birthday or Christmas.

      Step 2. Say goodbye to your social and love life or partying activities and be prepared to be mocked by your loved ones (until you can solve it and maybe still then ) ;-)

      Step 3 (optional) . Laugh that you're not quite as socially destitute as the cup speed stacker kids, but internally cry at their dexterity;
      http://youtu.be/usAWvTKplIs

      Step 4: Learn how to solve it. Depending on how you count them, there are between seven and about seventeen different moves that are required to solve a cube and with a little bit of practice you should be able to solve it within a week. The official Rubik's solution is pretty good for beginners and depending on how fast you want to go, there are other methods you can learn (search speed cubing);
      http://rubiks.com/solving-guide/3x3

      Step 5. Beat the world record of 5.55 seconds or build a Lego robot than can beat 3.25 seconds;
      http://www.theverge.com/2014/3/15/5512554/lego-mindstorms-ro…

      Once you've learned all the steps you will probably start at around 5 minutes, move down to half that fairly quickly and anything around the 1 minute 30 mark is pretty good. Under a minute you're absolutely rocking it. Sub 30 is brilliant and anything below 15 seconds is world class.

      Step 6. Profit???

        The joy in any puzzle is figuring it out… why play a game if you read the walkthrough? You can do it, IgnitionS15!

        One school holidays, I figured it out on an original Rubiks cube (and got sore fingers). Years later I came across a cheap Golo white cube and it is soooo smooth. Would have been so nice to have had that when figuring it out.
        So like Daabido said, my initial solution took about 5mins and I refined it to 1.5 - 2mins. But 6 secs?! One day I may come back to it.

  • Thanks tightarse :)
