BP Petrol/Fuel Gift Card Discounts - Effectively 5.66% off @ OneBigSwitch

505

You will need to register at One Big Switch (as per link) and you will have the option of buying either of the following amounts. There does not seem to be a definite quantity on how many you can buy, however I'm sure there will be limited gift cards.

Pay $50 - Get $53 worth of value.
Pay $500 - Get $530 worth of value.

*Works like an EFTPOS debit card
*Valid for all fuel types including diesel, plus in-store products
*Valid at participating BP outlets with eftpos Australia-wide for 12 months

This deal certainly beats the petrol vouchers the major supermarkets are offering, however the obvious drawback is you will need to pre-purchase the amounts.

I usually use the Caltex gift cards (Wishcard) which are sold at 5% discount at RACV (need membership … but there are more ways to get these Wishcards with 5% discount) … then combine it with 4cent vouchers (when possible) … comes at a similar saving …

    • +1

Being this also for years also. But i used the entertainment book to buy the Wishcards.

      • How do you do this? Is it bought online with a coupon?

        • First buy one of these (good value at $65):

          http://www.entertainmentbook.com.au/about/how-to-buy-an-ente…

Then buy the Wish cards through them at 5% off.

        • @Turd, once you have an Entertainment Book, you will get a EB membership number which is used to setup an account at https://www.membergiftcards.com.au/Entertainment-Book/2013-2…. Then you purchase gift cards from this website (5% off face value, free registered post) using your login and they post you the gift cards 2 weeks later.

FYI, after registering you EB member number against your account you can then pass on your login details to friends/family who just login with your details, pay with their own credit card and choose their own shipping address for the 5% off gift cards. But I think there is great value in the Entertainment Book at $70 (Sydney) anyway so I would always buy the book myself.

    • You can further increase your discount by buying the gift cards with a frequent flyer linked credit card and getting Myer points when showing your Myer card before paying with the gift card.

      • Myer points? They have to be about the worst reward system out there.

        • +1

I think he's talking about Caltex. You can pay for fuel at Caltex with a Wish Card (get 5% off), show your EDR/Woolworths fuel voucher for 4cpl off, and then also present your MyerOne card for 1 MyerOne shopping credit per dollar. This MyerOne shopping credit is worth one cent at Myer.
          http://www.myeroneaffiliates.com.au/affiliate.php?hidid=3661

        • This would only be at some Woolworths Caltex.

Many Woolworths Caltex's don't accept MyerOne, just like most Caltex Starmarts don't accept wish cards and fuel dockets.

        • +1

Yes, that MyerOne card. Not a good system, because you need to spend $2000 for a $20 gift card, but better than nothing

    • and paywave it ?

      • you can't pay wave these giftcards as you buy them online and they are delivered (free) registered post to you

    • +6

For all the drama and promotion surrounding this "ONE BIG SWITCH", the savings are surprisingly underwhelming. I'm sure many on Ozbargain are already stacking vouchers with Wish cards as mini_wombat mentioned or using their ME Bank card / ING Card 5% off everything.

Surely one big switch could have achieved something more than 0.66% more than what we are already getting but hey, not everyone is an ozbargainer

  • purchased 4 x $50 ($53 value)

  • +11

BP is usually more expensive than Shell/Caltex. (In adelaide anyway)
I also use the Wish 5% cards, so this isn't much of a savings.

    • +3

I too use the Wish giftcards and combine that with the 4c voucher from Woolworths and another 4c voucher from $5 worth of milk purchased in store.

    • +2

A-greed. First to raise, last to drop… and always higher. Add to that, the killing they make instore, AND the food franchises attached… they've got the whole game stitched-up.

Just need ignorant customers, or corp clients.

found BP Cheaper than Shell and Caltex in sydney

      • the 98 is 10 cents cheaper yesterday in hume highway than Shell and caltax!

    • http://petrolspy.com.au/ is pretty good for getting an idea about fuel prices. I think there are some other services as well

  • +3

My local BP in Sydney is already cheaper then the Woolies/Caltex or Shell after 4c/lt discount.
So this just makes it even cheaper :) Win Win

Just today paid 148.9 for Diesel when Woolies/Caltex is 160.9 - go figure

    • I found there is no such a thing as local BP where i am, they just don't exist.

  • +1

Thanks OP got 4 x $50 cards. Time to make the switch to BP ultimate from VPower.

  • +3

BP is better than Caltex, imo, using both 98s, BP last 2 days longer. So Thanks OP!!!

    • +14

There shouldn't be a difference between the brands of fuel. The only differences (for the same octane content) should just be additives which are like laughably negligible.

So feel free to buy fuel wherever it's the cheapest. Try look for newer servos or servos that look like they are being run by a big company chain, so you know they are checking the tanks regularly for contamination.

      • +2

Couldn't find anything wrong. So balanced the neg!

      • To elaborate on this, we have whats known as reciprocating agreements in all states for fuel importation and distribution. We simply do not consume enough petroleum products for it to be seperate. So yes ULP91/95/98 is the exact same product when comparing different brands, the only difference is with your premium products, so ultimate diesel/petrol, Vortex diesel/98/Highland/Alpine, V-power and extra, and speciality products like E85 etc. And thats only because of different additive packs.

        • +4

There is definitely a difference between Caltex 98 and BP 98. My car behaves differently on each (not talking about fuel economy here). This same effect has been confirmed by others with similar model cars. For this reason, although I used to buy Caltex I now buy BP. I would probably buy Shell if they were closer.

        • -7

          Bahahahahaha.

Sounds like a load of rubbish to me.

Probably a dud servo, plenty of old sites around that have questionable underground tanks, evidenced by how much water you bring up on the dipstick.

        • -2

@Evil-Elmo: there is no difference. I used to schedule fuel truck deliveries for Mobil and later BP. Sometimes during maintenance periods, it is standard for a company truck to fill up at another companies refinery/storage depot. I.e. a Shell branded truck filling up at a BP refinery.

        • -1

          @Son ofa Zombie:
If you're in Brisbane I'd be happy to show you the difference. Car stalls on first cold start every single time with Caltex 98, but not with Shell or BP 98 (not even one stall over a tank).

Independent mechanic and dealer confirmed the cold start stalling, but couldn't find the problem. At that time I had no idea it was the fuel.

Other owners who have the same engine have had the exact same thing happen to them. It took me a long time (over a year) to narrow it down to the fuel and I still wasn't convinced it was the fuel until other people had the same problem in their cars (same engine) which was fixed by switching fuel too.

Edit: Just for completeness, Caltex Vortex '95, or whatever the non-98 one is called, does not exhibit any such problems.

      • -2

Tried Caltex and Shell, Shell were always better, very noticeable. Even Caltex can be different depends on the batch. Haven't use BP for long time so cannot comment. I am in Sydney, not sure if it matters.

        • In NSW, Caltex is imported via Botany into Kurnell/silverwater, then is piped up to Newcastle when needed. Shell product comes in via Gore bay into parramatta/Rosehill. BP is shipped from Pinkenba via ship to Botany, also does a dregs drop into Newcastle as well. This will all change in the next 18 months when Pinkenba goes offline.

        • +1

I too have noticibly better economy using BP ultimate 98 vs caltex or shells 98's and a couple of my car nut friends swear by it as well.
I get about 80 kays more on a tank doing exactly the same drive, day in day out.

        • How long ago, They changed the vpower mix earlier this year to a mix similar to whats found in other countries (additive packs)

        • According to "the checkout" the extra mileage you get is not worth the extra cost compared to ordinary fuel.

        • +1

many vehicles require RON95/98 because of the lower sulfur content (particularly evident with european spec vehicles) running ULP91/E10 in them is no good because it has a 150ppm sulfur content vs 50ppm of 95/98

        • +3

A friend works at a local petrol station. He had a customer come in ranting 'my car's engine broke down right after I refueled here, you have dodgy petrol!' So the entire petrol supply was taken offline overnight until a Shell technician could visit and test.

In the morning the petrol was tested and found to be fine and completely within spec. The customer just happened to have his car fail after refueling and put 2 and 2 together and came up with 5. When dealing with customer's claims it pays to be cautious because they are often completely wrong.

        • +6

They did the right thing by taking the fuel offline to check. Similar thing happened to me (I was the customer) and sure enough there was excess water found in the underground tanks and many cars had broken down the following day after refilling at that petrol station (turns out after heavy rain this station always has problems). I had an $800 repair bill which Caltex covered after a bit of back and forth, and they made me sign a document saying I would never disclose… whoops :)

        • Yeah a couple of days ago I found myself low on fuel and had to put Vpower in from shell. I went into it with an open mind and I swear the engine is not as responsive on this juice, I have to give more throttle percentage to stay at 60 or 80 kmph on flat roads, and its taking 10-20% more throttle off the line to get moving in a same rate as on the Ultimate. It's not my imagination I swear.
It takes me about a month to use a tank so I may report back on the economy here later.

        • @greydaniel:
What were the atmospheric conditions like after you filled up with the Vpower? (eg. temperature, relative humidity, air density, etc.)

        • yerp; Leaving psychosomatic values, and European-seasoned motoring issues aside. :). Any one miss this month's fuel cycle-bottom /or chance to try the finishing additive not prescribed in your owner's manual; do tell what you will pay finally (eg fr Monday ?

nb: in any event, decreased rolling resistance, higher avg. engine temp, lower electrical loads & less aerodynamic lag, fuel economy improves in months ahead.

        • @Snoop:
Hello Snoop, Im in Melbourne and not in a hilly area, so the temperature at present is pretty similar day in day out (cold, wet and windy) :)

I have also factored in the fact its a small car (Mazda 3) and a full tank does weigh the vehicle down compared to when the fuel light is on, but a full tank of the Ultimate is not a sluggish as this.

Driving last night I had to put a bit more effort in holding gears a bit longer and some little rises where I would usually be holding 80 in 5th no sweat with about 10-15% throttle were needing 4th gear, I couldn't stay in 5th without the engine laboring.

Its just my opinion, but I have been around cars all my life, owning many different kinds, I like to pride myself on beating my economy month to month (I know winter cold starts chew fuel as it runs rich early on) I even use the economy 'game' on my garmin gps and try drive in the green zone and score high 90's.

        • @Cluster:
This is why customers are not always right

      • Additives won't make much mileage difference, but the pump meters do. I bet some petrol stations are pumping less fuel than others, may or may not stay within the lawful tolerance.

        • They get tested regularly, and besides they shouldn't require calibration. Newer sites will offset the density difference to be selling product at L15.

Theres a reason why most bowsers say minimum 2-5l, and why that picture lately of that bowser with 1l showing it differently was wrong. Best way to check is to see if it all matches at 10L.

    • +1

BP charge less for premium than Coles/ WW.

  • +15

I will rather use ING 5% discount and pay only when I need it..rather than prepaying for it for 0.66% difference

    • Or ME Bank 5%.

      • I have got ME Bank 5% but this 5% promo is only valid for 6 months.

        • Yes so this offer is for your usage from 7th to 12th month, to be estimated and prepaid upfront, non-refundable.

    • +1

      That will eventually become 2%.

  • -2

I was wondering who the deal was going to be with. Couldn't the haversion chosen someone better. My local bp price is 1.64 compared to united fuel directly across the ride at 1.53 for diesel. Go figure.

  • +1

No BP within 100km's, a little unusual i would have thought. Everything but BP. Weird.

    • +1

      Do you live in Darwin?

  • +5

my bugatti veyron doesn't like ultimate unfortunately

so i will stick to vpower

    • +2

time to upgrade to the McLaren P1. Veyron is so 2005.

    • +1

Works fine in my Maserati GranCabrio that I bought last year from the money I saved on Ozbargain…

      • +6

You save money on Ozbargain? I spend money on Ozbargain!

        • +2

The more you spend, the more you save.
          -Marketing 101

    • my bugatti veyron doesn't like ultimate unfortunately

Reading this is very inspiring to me. With realizing today alone that 2 fellow OzBargainers now own Veyrons (also see eneloop's comment here), I'm thinking that if I keep at it on here that there is still a chance of me owning one… one day!!!

      • It's pretty affordable for buying those runs with eneloop.

  • Does anyone know what caltex/shell/BP charge for 98 octane on top of the unleaded price? Haven't been to BP for quite a while.

    • +3

In Vic, BP charge 14c on top of RON91 prices.

    • +1

      14-16c usually

    • +1

Here in Vic I've noticed BP and 7-Eleven (Mobil) charge 14c whereas Shell charge 17c on top of 91 prices.

      • evidently negating the 4 cent voucher and average customer saves 1 cent per litre..

  • I prefer Caltex/Woolworths and my local also accepts MyerOne card for extra points. Disappointing that Caltex didnt stitch up this deal.

  • +2

Wow im surprised for such a small saving that people actually buy these.
I just fill up by prices not by brand and save more than that as BP is usually 8-10c p/l more than independents.

    • +2

There are practically no independents in Canberra. There's 1 United that I can think of basically on the NSW border. If you didn't happen to live near there, spending $10 on fuel to get there to save that 10c/L obviously isn't the ozbargain way.

So there are people who this isn't a bargain for, and there are those who it is a bargain for, particularly if you use BP ultimate and drive a turbo car.

Therefore it's not fair to neg the deal just because it isn't a bargain for everyone. Most deals are for products that most other people don't need or want and that's not a reason to neg. Neither is living in a location where the prices make this deal not worthwhile for your vehicle based on prices and requirements.

  • Hmm, bugger. I signed up for this but don't think I'll bother as the 2 BP's near my place are always more expensive than my local Woolies :(

  • -1

    It's actually 5.67%

    • You need a better calculator. :)

      • holy !@#$

  • Can I use my 2 cents per liter lpg BP discount card along with this. And any idea how long to deliver thanks.

    • Would like to know answer to same question. Have had a look around on the site but no info. Be nice if it could be used together.

Near my place in Brisbane BP, Coles and Woolies at around same price. Strangely enough it was the BP that dropped the LPG price back before the others did. SO if it can be used with the LPG card will just be that little more tempting

      • This realistically depends on the console operator who serves you. The likely response would probably be "you can't use that card in conjunction with bp cards", but if you have a look at the T&C it states "Not valid with BP plus card purchase". A gift card is not a BP plus card, so if you bring up that point and show them the card (which has that printed on the back in small text) you should be able to attain the additional discount from the card as well.

Alternatively, the person who serves you either already knows what it's valid for, or just doesn't care and will let you use it anyway.

  • +3

In my area in Brisbane BP is usually 10-16c more expensive than Wollies/Coles.
I get 5% off from gift cards and 4c from the shop. No deal in my eyes.

    • In north east melbourne, bp is always at least 1c less than shell/woollies. They are also always the last to raise their prices in my area, usually by half a day. Also, shell/woollies 98 usually is around 17c above 91, whereas bp is 13-14c. So it works out that bp is just as cheap for 98 as the big two with a shop a docket. So for melb, if you want 98, I think it's worth it.

From memory in tassie 3 yrs ago, bp was by far the most expensive

  • confirmed nothing nearby our Shire.
    http://www.localstore.com.au/stores-search/s/47282/19339/bp-…

    duopoly+group card= $54return & status quo.; vs cash-by-mail. ..risky anyhow.

  • Anyone knows how long does the card expire?

Sorry just saw it, 12 months.

    • which means you could be losing up to 12 months interest on your money…

      • True, but I wouldn't buy 12 months worth of fuel in advance because I couldn't afford to haha. It'd be $2300 thereabouts for me.

I just bought $200 worth because that's not too much over 2 tanks worth of fuel (1 month) and interest won't be a big problem in that time.

I wonder how long this deal will be on. If it's still on when I'm running out of them, I may buy some more then. That'd minimise the interest issue if you could keep buying them.

  • -2

I wonder if the card works at other outlets… not just BP…

  • +1

All BP outlets near me are consistently 10 to 20 cents per litre dearer than any of their rivals.

    • Near me being south of Brisbane and my commute to the city each day.

    • +1

That's highly unusual. Perhaps you're comparing coles/shell on E10 with the 4c/8c shopper docket discount versus 95 regular unleaded without a discount? Surely that'd be the explanation, because that is definitely not the case at any BP I've been to around Australia. Their prices are higher than the shopper docket discount prices generally, but for better fuel. And often they are cheaper than the non-discounted shell/caltex prices or very similar.

Also, basically every car enthusiast swears by BP Ultimate premium unleaded over anything else and would happily pay a premium for it.

  • Per T&C's: BP will refund the unused value on damaged Cards

Hmmmm… Broden the cards, cut them in half and get face value refund?

  • -1

*Works like an EFTPOS debit card

No it doesn't. It works like a gift card. You need to pre-pay it.

    • +2

I'm pretty sure if you have no money in your eftpos linked account you can't make a purchase, so what's the difference?

  • -2

Has anybody noticed that they're saying you get $53 of credit on your gift card for $50 and yet they call that a 5.5% discount when it's clearly 6%?

Or are they rounding up, and it'd actually be a $52.75 gift card for $50?

    • -1

Why am I getting negged? Did I miss something?

      • +5

Maths fail: You get $53 of value for $50, therefore discount is 3/53 = 5.66%.

        • Ah cheers. For some reason I was just thinking "well 3/50 is 6%." rather than buying $53 for $50.

        • +1

You would be correct if had been worded as a bonus, because a bonus of $3 over $50 is 6%.

I suspect they did it this way instead of offering a $50 card for $47 to deter people from earning $3 immediately by onselling the card. This way if people try to sell the card, they have to convince the buyer that there is $3 extra on the card when the buyer can see no visible evidence and won't know if there is $3 extra on it until it's used.

  • +1

After some research I'm negging this because Uncle Rupert is involved. There is no way he cares about the "consumer" definitely some commissions at least in it for the root of all evil News Corp. As evidenced BP is always more expensive anyway.
