  • Is this any good? Was looking for one as my smart tv can only record one channel and I can't switch channel if recording in going on.

      • Looks like a really old model as launched in 2010.

I've got one that I use heavily. They're not the prettiest in terms of user interface, etc, but they work pretty well at their core functionality of recording, and rewinding live TV. They don't have user hostile features like some units, such as no 30 second skipping, and things that don't seem to work on the cheap and nasty DVRs - like watching a show that's still recording - always work fine.

  • Freeview Plus may reduce the need for a PVR worth considering prior to purchase.

    • +1

      LOL.

Freeview Plus will be an absolute flop.

    • +1

Unless you live outside a city. Gold Coast broadcasters win and prime have canned it. Plus you need to buy rhe latest model tv or set top. What's the point really.
And I bet the don't allow ad skipping etc.

    • +1

Whilst the Freeview Plus will offer some good features, Freeview is has been created to offer benefits for the TV stations.

Still need to understand these possible issues…….

****"Freeview is the brand name/marketing term for the free-to-air television stations in Australia. It is working to provide an EPG that has its own data stream and which it claims will be much more accurate. It will make use of a new standard called MHEG5, which among other things will allow devices to recognise when a program has begun and ended. DVRs with a Freeview sticker currently don't support MHEG5, so if you want this new technology you'll have to buy a new DVR that has a Freeview EPG logo on it.

The restrictions that are currently in place with Freeview-labelled DVRs, such as no ad-skipping and limited copying, still apply and may even have things such as “overlay ads” included, which appear if you're fast forwarding through an ad break in a recording and can't be removed until you press 'PLAY'."****

      • +1

like it or hate it those intrusive ads are going to become more common, step 1, change the epg/format and force people to upgrade hardware, step 2, secretly add the commercials when fast forwarding, reduce fast forward speeds, stop skipping/ad zapping etc i have 2 pvrs and so these days i hardly watch any live tv, and i'm saving a ton of time by skipping ads, like a 2hr movie can save me around 40min but i fear that will be short lived…

3 month warranty always inspires confidence!

    • +2

How long would you expect on a second hand unit? 3 months is pretty usual with sub $100 used appliances.

Paying freight for warranty repairs is more worrying.

      • -1

I prefer a company stands by their refurb units. I would want to get more than 6 months use out of this. If these are quality refurbs, where is the risk in giving 12 months warranty?

        • +2

You seem to be confusing useable life of product, with length of warranty. Longer warranties do not mean longer life. If a unit dies on day1, waiting for it to come back from repairs may take many weeks, irrespective of warranty length. In some bad cases that cycle repeats until the warranty expires.

Often longer warranties are given by shonkier traders - to help you overlook their reputation. Warranties are often offered by a third party insurer, which is not interested in any repairs. You may only be offered a part refund, or discount towards more expensive unit, or warranty may not cover HDD etc. It's often not the length of warranty that is the main issue.

[For example, a manufacturer a few years back insisted I pay for freight on a PVR to examine a warranty issue. As the problem was with faulty firmware, I said I would not send it as they could send me an update. Unfortunately, as no one had paid to send the faulty unit at their expense, no firmware fault had been seen, no update written, & so if I sent my unit in, it would sit there for months & not be repaired - resulting in a refund (LESS my shipping costs). I took it back to the store & luckily got a refund. Warranties!]

This manufacturer has a pretty good reputation.

[I was approached to work for a PVR manufacturer / distributor to provide pre-production advice on improvements to their units. They had a lot of returns.]

  • Has a similar design to the foxtel IQ 'hd' is this a similar box for recording freeview programming? Dual recording etc. sounds similar.

    • +1

Yes, very much the same thing, especially if you have an IceTV account that lets you set exotic timers from anywhere. I got one for a very non tech-savvy friend who is used to the IQ and they love it, they now wish the IQ had a programmable ad-skip button.
