$0: OneDrive Increases FREE Storage from 7GB to 15GB (July Rollout)

840

Our data tells us that 3 out of 4 people have less than 15 GB of files stored on their PC. Factoring in what they may also have stored on other devices, we believe providing 15 GB for free right out of the gate – with no hoops to jump through – will make it much easier for people to have their documents, videos, and photos available in one place.

Users will begin to see the additional space during the rollout in July.

Please note this deal was moved to forums after reaching front page this morning. The mods agree this is a deal based on precedents:

This is a community. So if enough people report the post the Mods will again move this to the forums.

My point being this increase hasn't even started yet.
It feels like "news" not a "deal"
7gb has always been free and now that amount has just increased. Unlike this deal that was going from paid to free. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/142204

  • so is it only for new users? or existing users would also get the free upgrade?

    • +1

      Erryone! :D

      • So do we need to do anything to get it?

        • No…

    • No, that's not how it works.

While this is a grey area, after discussion and researching precident, the conclusion is that this is considered a deal. We will try to rewrite the guidelines to cater for these situations in the future to save confusion.

      • +3

What about the fact you don't have to do anything to get this increase?

        • Just because you have to do something or not do something isn't written in the guidelines.

Looking at the examples cited by TA:

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/95434
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/142204

Those required people to not do anything. So the question is are we happy with these deals or not? These get voted up and have positive comments regarding the deal. However on the other hand there are reports and negative comments saying that this should be in the forums.

So let's think about whats the best for the overall community and come up with some guidelines to help others in the future.

        • What about the fact you don't have to do anything to get this increase?

ciab, did you need to do anything here?

Can you reinstate my negative vote and let the community decide whether it is a valid or not?

        • Your vote is invalid and was revoked.

This is going to change peoples behaviour on those few days and then revert back. The community liked that "deal" no doubt. But when statements like:

Do not report this as a forum topic. The mods agree this is a deal based on precedents and

Please do not report this post, as the mods are totally aware of this now. Thank you. TA.

This to me is stating that the community doesn't have a choice on whether this is a deal or not.

        • Your vote is invalid and was revoked.

          It could fall under :

          Negative Vote
The deal is not the cheapest available
          Defective Product.
          Major issues with retailer.

both of those could be argued as valid reasons to -ve vote Microsoft… ;)

        • OK, I'll remove the comment. All this anger…

        • @ciab, I agree and have removed part of that statement. All members have the right to report whatever they like.

the conclusion is that this is considered a deal

        On what basis?
This is just an announcement. You don't even have to do anything.
Anyone with 7GB will just get moved to 15GB.

        • +2

Well, I'm genuinely Happy with this "Announcement", since I miss the last similar deals.

And because this is posted here and not in the forums (often not visit), I am now aware there is a reliable 15gb cloud service I can sign up to :)

C'mon Guys, if this kinda post helps people like me and quite possibly a few others, it won't hurt anyone to leave it on the "Deals" page and Thank the OP(s) once in awhile for their work.

Quit bickering at each other over a decent post.

        • +3

since I miss the last similar deals.

you can't actually 'miss' this, there is nothing for you to do.

Quit bickering at each other over a decent post.

that is your subjective view… and just like you just did, others also have a right to express their views. That is why there are 'comments' for each deal, to discuss it, not just for brown nosing…

        • Say what you like mate, it still sounds like bickering to me. No use of me adding fuel to flame.

And brown nosing? C'mon.. Regardless of whoever posted this deal, I would have thanked him/her too.
          Even you.

        • Not a good idea to start something with jv… Just saying.

  • from 7GB to 15GB

I just checked mine and I already have 25GB

    • +3

      same here.

If you signed up for SkyDrive when it first came out (back in 2009 or whatever) then you got 25GB for life.

      • +4

        I thought it'd be 25+ 8 ugh, disappointing.

      • Only if you had either used more than 7GB before they announced the changes, or you logged in in the first month after the changes and clicked the button to say you wanted to keep the 25GB. If you didn't do either of those then you got dropped to 7GB even if you signed up before the changes.

  • +1

    Thanks T.A

  • +3

Does everyone hate TightArse or something? I mean, the Vodafone thing was the same thing. Just an "announcement"… But hey, that's just my personal opinion.

Saw the old post, but thanks again anyways T.A.

  • Hey no fair, i didnt get the free upgrade :(

    • +1

It only works if you +ve vote TA's post.

  • When does this come into effect? I just checked mine and I'm still on 7gb

  • Seems like there are hoops to jump through?

    Welcome to OneDrive

Everything from your SkyDrive account is waiting for you. Set up your OneDrive and earn an extra 8 GB of storage.

    STEP 1
    Back up for 3GB

    STEP 2
    Sync from PC or Mac

    STEP 3
    Refer for up to 5GB

    • +1

Seems like there are hoops to jump through?

That is an additional 8GB, so you can get up to 23GB (15GB + 8GB) for free…

      • Not for me.

        10 GB total
        Free 7 GB
Referral bonus (0% achieved) 0 GB
        Camera roll bonus 3 GB

So it would make it 18GB for free, if I jump through the hoops.

        • +1

          Free 7 GB

Microsoft haven't applied the extra free 8GB yet, it's only an announcement at this stage.

        • Yes - digging through the comments in the announcement page reveals that it will be rolled out over the next month. Perhaps an update to the OP to clarify?

  • -1

Still 7GB ONLY (checked a min ago)

This is probably for targeted users ONLY, seems not everyone got the free upgrade

    • ciab:

My point being this increase hasn't even started yet.

  • Max file size is usually small for free cloud storage.

    • +1

      unlimited file size.

  • -1

Checked my account and I'm still on 7GB too…

    • ciab:

My point being this increase hasn't even started yet.

  • -1

i didnt get the free upgrade either

    • ciab:

My point being this increase hasn't even started yet.

  • +1

Amazing how many people don't actually read the link to the "deal", since reading it would mean you wouldn't ask if you had to do anything or ask why you haven't gotten the upgrade yet.

  • -1

As we are discussing the deal. Lets have a look a the precedents (in the description) and what you have to do to get them:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/134143

be one the first 100,000 user to log in 100GB free storage for a year.

Limited quantity (only 100,000 worldwide) and limited time (For one year).

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/142204

For current premium users, you will no longer be charged for this feature.

    Going from paid to free.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/95434

as long as you deposit at least $200 each month and make no withdrawal.

As long as you do the required deposit and no withdrawal you get the rate.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/68589

    log-in and claim your 25GB

If you didn't do that you would only have 7gb

As opposed to this announcement where everyone will be receiving the 15GB by doing nothing.

    • +1

Why do you have to do something for it to be a deal?

      • But what is the deal here? A cloud service is announcing their free offering is moving from 7GB to 15GB.

    • +4

Just so you know ciab, I was (am) paying $10 per year for additional storage on OneDrive, as 7GB isn't enough. This extra 8GB is plenty for what I need, so I'll be saving $10. For me, it's a great deal :)

      http://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/27551/23534/capture.jpg

      • paying $10 per year for additional storage on OneDrive

You will be paying less next month ;)

The real deal is at dot point three (https://blog.onedrive.com/new-onedrive-storage-plans/)

We are dropping storage prices by over 70%

        • What's stopping people from signing up for OneDrive Business with a single user for $2.50/month (50% discount until end of Sept, presumably for life but not sure) and getting 1TB? That's 10x the storage you get on a personal plan for an extra 51c.

EDIT It was only for 6 months (until end of September). All business OneDrive only plans will return to $5/month for 1TB after that.

  • Cheers

  • Does anyone know if there's a client application like dropbox that lets you talk to many back-end storage providers? Would be great to add up all that free storage and use it as if it's just one drive.

    • If you are on a PC (wont work on iphone/ipad), just download all the sync software for each, you should be able to move files between providers because they will appear as normal folders.
      I.e.
      1. download Dropbox software, oneDrive software and Google Drive software
      2. This will then add a DropBox, OneDrive and Google Drive folder to your PC.
      3. Just move files/folders between.

disclaimer… I havent tested this extensively though should work. If anyone is interested in trying please report back. I havent go proxy permissions to download these apps where I am now…

      • I dont see that working, if you nest one folder in another, its size should also contribute to its parent folders' size.
        Intriguing idea though.

      • Programs fight for memory and bandwidth dragging your machine down to a crawl
Plus you need to remember where each thing is saved - is that doc in drive or onedrive or dropbox?

  • +1

FWIW, I think it's questionable whether this is a deal or not. But I'm glad its on the front page, otherwise I probably wouldn't have known about it.

  • 1 TB for Office 365 subscribers!

  • +1

    Mega - always 50GB free - https://mega.co.nz/
Copy(www.copy.com) - starts with 15GB, every invitation gets additional 5GB (both invitee and inviter)

    • Leaving your trusted data with someone who actively promoted piracy.. hmm :)

      • Only if size does matter, I don't use Mega, but use copy, and more like dropbox.
but I don't think anyone would have more than 10GB of trusted data. (If they have then it would be a company which will anyway have their data centres) for someone like you and me spending time on ozbargains looking for bargains I doubt we have more than 1GB of trusted data :)

        • but I don't think anyone would have more than 10GB of trusted data. (If they have then it would be a company

Family photos. I have over 80GB and counting and I think plenty of people would have much, much more than that. And it's definitely critical data (assuming that's what is meant by "trusted data") - I wouldn't want it exposed to the world and I most certainly wouldn't want any of it lost permanently.

  • I wouldn't have noticed this for months or even longer so thanks for posting.

Would never have seen it in the forums either!

  • My a/c 10gb…?

  • hopefully Google will counter attack with an upgraded Drive :p

  • didnt get the upgrade

    • But you will from next month

    • +2

The post clearly states July rollout.

Most of us here are in June, 2014, how about yourself?

  • The storage is to sell the Office 365 product
$99.99 p.a. for 1TB! plus 5 licences for desktop office (PC/Mac) and 5 for tbalet plus skype minutes
Cheapest way to get that much storage with no file size limit

  • No Dropbox upgrade in years. :(

    • They're doing well enough as is so no real incentive to offer anymore bonuses right now.
I always found Sugarsync to be better than Dropbox but Sugarsync dropped any kind of free plan.

  • Just noticed today that the extra GB's are there for me.

I've now got 18gb in total:

15 GB Free plus 3 GB camera roll bonus.

I previously hard around 9 or 10 GB.
