[Vodafone] Unlimited Mobile Data Usage Weekend (FREE) from Midnight (AEST) Friday 20 June to 3am Monday 23 June

2420
This post contains affiliate links. OzBargain might earn commissions when you click through and make purchases. Please see this page for more information.

Not sure if this was allowed, however I do believe people need to know about this because not everyone would have experienced the issues (i.e. half of Sydney). Thus even if this gets moved to the forums hopefully it reaches enough people so that they know to DESTROY THE VODAFONE NETWORK!

Absolutely unlimited mobile data usage FREE OF CHARGE, EHRMAGHERD!

Seriously, if you are on Vodafone. Take advantage and just download whatever you want, watch Youtube, just absolutely demolish it especially if you guys use smartphones. Just use Personal Hotspot / Tethering (Same Thing), and just KILL DAT DATA!

Enjoy you OzBargainers!

From a Store Rep of Vodafone jimbobaus:

It will work for all numbers which were active on the Vodafone network between the hours of 1pm and 5pm Thursday June 19th 2014 (AEST)

Thus buying a $2 SIM will NOT work for this offer. Sorry, unlucky.
Mixed messages, and different sources of information concede different viewpoints. We'll have to wait and see if purchasing a SIM tomorrow will enable users to take advantage of this offer.

From some mad kid:

EVERYONE I JUST RECEIVED A CALL BACK FROM VODAFONE POCKET WIFI ARE INCLUDED IN THE UNLIMITED WEEKEND!!!!!

Pocket Wifi has seem to be approved for use 3G + 4G.

REMEMBER THOUGH: IT STARTS AT 12AM FRIDAY and ENDS 3AM MONDAY AEST!
(Starting Friday Night/Saturday Morning)

Note: NEVER seen Optus or Telstra do ANYTHING like this before.
Note: I like this offer. Period.

Yes you will. Well at least from the information provided, I believe so.

  • +1

typical. im going to a no service (for any network) area this weekend.

  • +1

Yay my prepaid 365 plan will come in handy.

  • +4

Have 365 day prepaid plan… discover I have $18 credit left and 500MB of data… OH MY GOD!

SOOOOOO going to shove my Vodafone sim in my DSE G526 and share the hell out of it!

  • Will Vodafone representative please confirm or not whether free data applies to mobile phones only or does this extend to wifi sim data usage also?

We have 3 mobiles (active during the applicable period) but also 2 separate wifi services (one 3G and the other 4G) too.

So 5 possibilities of using the free data? Or just the 3 mobiles?

Ps. We didn't experience any problems with any services.

Would rather not ring Vodafone; can imagine their phone lines are running rather hot.

    Thank you (sincerely) :o)

  • so if we start smashing it from tomorrow, I assume the IOS voda app will just show no additional data used? For example if I have already used 500mb prior to the free period, technically it should remain at that point for the whole weekend yeah?

  • +1

I can download game of thrones now!

    • +1

      That's what i'm doing teehee.

      • Does free data apply to our wifis (we have 3G and 4G) also? Or only mobile phone sims? Just wish to clarify; I sent Vodafone Media person a sms but no response as yet.
        Thank you.

  • +4

I hope vodafone techs have the foresight to allow their systems to "zero" the first data session after 3am on Monday.

    I can see it already.

Folks going hard on the data and the final data session not being terminated before 3am so it records 1.2 GB at 3.05am.

Edit: For users sake, please be on the safe side. After you've finished your download hoarding flick it to airplane mode for a few moments and then switch data back on, this will ensure your data session is terminated

    • Good advice!
Will people stay up to 3am though just for free data?

  • Now is a good reason to buy a E5372T (Telstra 4G Wifi) for $100 and unlock it for this weekend.

    • Can snatch them for about $50 if you know where to look :) (Sorry, just saw the wifi part)

Though to be honest, I think everyone is just going to use this in their unlocked Vodafone Huawei G526 phones because it's a 4G/LTE with wifi hotspot/tethering that we bought from DSE for $99

      • +1

G526 is only LTE Cat 3. Max 100MBps downlink.

        Cat 4 = 150 MBps downlink.
        Cat 6 = 300 MBps downlink.

    • +1

Actually the Huawei E5786 LTE Cat 6 device just came out. Does Vodafone even support Cat 6 yet, or only Cat 4?

  • Yay Vodafone!

Maybe I should download last full season of GoT HD quality and stream worldcup 2014 all weekend lol

Anyways, so Telstra never had any outage like this ever?

  • +1

Will this work for Voda phones pocket WiFi???? please tell me yes hahah I will go on a downloading spree

    • I am asking the same. Sent a SMS to a Vodafone media person too; no response yet. Like you, am hoping as we have both the 3G and 4G wifis as well as 3 mobile phones …

      • +3

THANKS FOR THE HEADS UP, EVERYONE I JUST RECEIVED A CALL BACK FROM VODAFONE POCKET WIFI ARE INCLUDED IN THE UNLIMITED WEEKEND!!!!!! GET YOUR TORRENTS READY OP PLEASE ADD THIS IN DESCRIPTION

Cool first time I've contributed something back to ozbargains

        • +1

Thank you … I have been asking the same … Here, there and everywhere!

Vodafone should have clarified this earlier I think; I have had no reply from them as yet. Imagine the nightmare if wifi not included and people assumed they could! I have already arranged for a 1.25GB just a day earlier …

  • +1

Will this work on vodaphones pocket WiFi???please tell me yes I will go on a downloading spree

    • No sorry. It does not as it currently stands from the information provided.

      • +1

It does I just rung and checked I was told yes

        • If so does this apply to business customers?

    • See my reply below … Yes, yes and yes!

      ;o)

  • +1

Can someone please ring Vodafone to confirm my answer that I got from one of there operators

    • +2

Just range Vodafone for you, and me.

"For all Vodafone customers; includes wifi and pre-paid customers."

Asked Vodafone to clarify this on our thread… Passed on to Media team.

      ;o)

      • +1

Haha this is awesome news thank you good bye to the last space on my external drive

  • +4

Vodafone will throttle the hell out of this for sure. No way they will allow everyone unlimited data for almost 3 days with no limitations and 100% bandwidth

    • No this is the way of stress testing their network. We stress, they test! :D

      • I'll download some HD movies ;D to test their network. I may go back to them if the network works well over the weekend.

      • Apologies; I inadvertently touched the neg vote but cannot change it back now. I did mean to give a positive vote as I was also thinking it is a great way to evaluate the effectiveness of the system … I really hope they cope! :o)

        • +1

No worry about that mate! have a great weekend

    • Murphy's Law … ; o)

  • cool thanks. lets try and bring down vodaphone servers. whats the best way to use data? is it steaming pr0n with the live chat popups popping up constantly? that way you steaming 2 'vieos' at once.

  • Unlimited but you get full bar reception AND STILL has no data coming through.

So is this really truly unlimited? You judge.

Oh I forgot to tell you it flicks from 3G/HSPDA all the time. Also calls drop. Coverage map shows 100% covered from where I receive and make calls, yet not really. Vodafone lies again

They are doing this to redeem themselves for outage its once off only lol

Since changing to Telstra I had 0 issues, data always work signal shows the reality not some bullshit from vodafone

    • +2

We all agree that Telstra has a better, more consitent coverage… But how much extra is it costing?

    • Well I have 4G wifi and am very pleased with our data speed in Cranbourne. Mother still uses 3G wifi in Frankston with no issues either, whether 3G or HSPDA . We shall be testing functionality in both areas on Saturday and comparing results. I have had only one call dropout this year and not absolutely certain it was my 3G mobile at fault.

I won't ever deal with Telstra, especially since they posted a new broadband modem to my senior aged mother a few years back now, with a very expensive and low GB contract involved … which she not request. At the time she was happily using Dodo which was very cheap. We didn't even bother opening the parcel! What a hassle to get it sorted (returned) it was! Bloody nerve of them to try and 'push' their product in that manner.

  • Is coles selling $2 sim card??? If so, I would like to have a try regardless of if this way works for the weekends free data or not:P

    • Try this…https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/144234

      • Thx. But it should be delivered within 3 or 5 business days:(…

        • NIL

    • I understood the free data is for existing (as of last Thursday) sim cards, not new sim cards or plans. Refer to an earlier Vodafone link. Later posts are suggesting new sims/plans are acceptable too. Perhaps Vodafone has changed the eligibility.

Safeways has the cheap sim cards too. Vodafone has quite a few pre-paid plans, one as low as $10; check their website to compare : o)

  • call Vodafone saying that you have it on 774 AM to have unlimited national calls for the rest of the month!

  • +2

nice. remember you can use your android phones for torrents!
search flud on play store. i recommend this one!

  • +1

Lebara has this as well since they are on Vodafone network, just received a SMS from them, start modnight 20 Jun, does it mean after 12pm tonight or this morning already?

    • +2

I could tell you to read the 30 or so earlier posts that have mentioned this already… But it's just easier to let you know that it starts from Midnight tonight (Friday/Saturaday)!!!

This may be a mixed message from Vodafone, but they say that even if you sign up to be customer today you are eligible. But you will need to credit on your prepaid account (see whirlpool post).

      • +1

Yeah also confirmed it by their FB. So what is the minimum amount we can charge? I have seen it should be the $10 :/… Not sure if including the adds on charge for internet which is $5

  • +2

with hello mobile prepaid here and just got a text from them for free data this weekend.

gonna be youtubing it up at work!

  • +2

Download Titanfall for free this weekend on your unlimited data.

  • I got a $2 sim, activated. Let's see if it will work!

Haven't recharged anything yet, and for some reason I can only get 3G. Do I need to recharge to get 4G?

If recharge required here is the most value for money $5 (750mb) though it's not like it matters.

    • A possible reason may be due to your area/location, device compatibility and SIM registration details. And I believe there's a minimum amount requirement on the card. Probably like $1.50 or something, not too sure.

      • Both home/work are supposed to be in their 4G network according to their coverage map… (I use an iPhone 5) meh let's see if it works tomorrow then I'll recharge $5 or not…

edit: aw yeah got 4G finally, it was on one bar then fell back to 3G. lol. it's free (or $2), can't complain.

    • Ok it appears that you might need to recharge the sim with something in order for it to work. I can reach the Vodafone website but not anything else.

  • +2

*** PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS STARTS 12.01AM SATURDAY MORNING *** I was an idiot and thought friday midnight was this morning and now I have a huge 5GB excess. Tried to call vodaphone and even took it to supervisors and they wouldn't take a bar of it. The supervisor simply got out a dictionary and read out the meaning of midnight and said I will have to pay the fee.

    • +6

      stiff tities mate

    • +1

prepaid all the way d00dz cheers for the weekend!

  • +2

I'm getting an awesome 2 mbps at moment, can't wait to see my dial up speed when midnight comes along.

  • I have a lebara sim which is on Vodafone. Got a sms saying free data from midnight

  • Just Got a Mobile Broadband SIM all registered and ready to go.
Don't care if I get the free data or not as I'll use the 3GB it came with but hoping I will.
Lets see if speeds are vaguely usable…

  • +1

Hooray for the vodNet!\o/ here is to many such bargain bonuses.

  • +10

    and here we go

    • +1

      Lol, get some sleep OzBargain!

      • +1

        We OzBargainers never sleep.

        Never.

  • This is stupid! The unlimited doesn't work cause I was capped at around 2gb of data usage. The internet stopped working! I'm gonna make an enquiry about this. "You do not have sufficient credit to complete your request"

    • +1

Did you restart your device at or after 12AM?
If you were using it before hand perhaps it continued the session and used your credit?

      • +2

I fixed it. Had I think cause I blew up the usage that restarting the device worked again

  • +1

ohhh yes while you all sleep im getting my downloads done at 30mb/s :D My area has never had so much power.

    • +1

      That's so fast!

      • +1

With great power, comes great downloads.

    • +1

That does sound rather fast. I am using our 4G and it is absolutely fine. Afraid I don't know how to ascertain the speed though; appears the same to me.

Good luck OB's … Have fun with your free smegabits!

      ;o)

      • +1

Install speedtest app. I get 2-8 mb/s. Only get 3G here, the 850mhz towers are supposed to be faster but I don't seem to experience that.

      • Just google speed test

      • Just ran that OOKLA speed test (downloaded through Apple) … Bear with me as I am not very computer app literate … And really don't know how to assess speeds (on sight alone … Yes a dinosaur) but the result was:

        DOWNLOAD 19.70 Mbps
        UPLOAD. 5.76 Mbps
        PING 33 ms

Hope that helps someone monitoring speeds.

That's 4G wifi at Cranbourne, Victoria.

Using son's iPad2 so not sure on the cut/paste thing on here…. Yay, he had already decided to take off this weekend with the laptop to use up Nan's excess smegabits … Haha!

    • +1

**update*** Lots of crashes now LOL takes a while for my phone to connect to internet now and it likes to disconnect a lot. I also received lots of "insufficient funds" warnings when browsing, but to fix that just do a quick restart.. Might just be me but yeah…update

      • I do know a prepaid is supposed to be in credit to work; perhaps put $5-$10 on it to see if that sorts the problem; credit just too low. Well, that is my suggestion. Good luck there!

    • +1

      Yep likewise; 21/06/14 - 2:56am - 30.28Mbps
Edit: That's 3G VF on my Galaxy S4 on Speedtest!

  • "From a Store Rep of Vodafone jimbobaus:

It will work for all numbers which were active on the Vodafone network between the hours of 1pm and 5pm Thursday June 19th 2014 (AEST)"

I have an active Vodafone number, but the phone that had the SIM in it was switched off all day Thursday. Do I still get the free data?

    • They said "active" so should be fine. I understand prepaids need to be in credit, but if not certain just ring them to verify … My understanding would be YES.

  • Seems to be handling the pressure http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/a/866506877

  • +2

Seems happy with my included sim that came with the Voda G526 from Kmart Deal (had to add a $5 300Mb data pack with a month to use after this weekend)

    (only activated Sim yesterday afternoon)

Wish we could get 4G on Voda here but 3G is pretty good now with everyone that left to go to Optus/Telstra networks ;)

EDIT: to be clear- only needed a data pack not a txt/voice top up recharge…

    • I stretch out my 750Mb data on my mobile each month; find it is enough for emails, odd weather or app update and even a YouTube video or two, so your 300Mb maybe enough for checking your emails …

My mother is still using 3G wifi at Frankston (Victoria) and although she can upgrade to 4G for only a few extra dollars (as existing Vodafone internet customer … Yeah I know lucky, lucky, lucky ) current 3G speeds for her are quite satisfactory! Comparable speeds to my 4G wifi. Yes, maybe others leaving for Optus/Telstra works in our favour!

Check online; Vodafone does offer quite a variety of pre-paid top up options. I usually update my son's mobile with a $20 international plan each month, which gives his mobile unlimited calls to Vodafone phones. Do a recharge before month end and carries over the credit. Handy as our family all use Vodafone phones and my $20 post paid plan has only … 300 OnNet minutes (free Vodafone calls) and 150 text. My old talk and text plan (carried over from 3) has 22c calls to landlines (out of the $20) for 10 minutes so I don't have a landline phone here; outer suburban area that Telstra classifies as rural … With high call charges. Cheaper if we all use mobiles here! Yes, it works well to use his mobile to call family on his phone.

  • Gonna be an interesting weekend… http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2276060

  • +2

Getting the best part of a megabyte through my Mf60 unlocked, easily 2GB per hour and as high as 3GBph 3G. What the other networks offer an hour of Voda offers days worth of it.

  • +3

HOLY BLOODY HELL!!! I'M USING A G526 AND THIS THING IS FLYING!!!

  • +7

I've already dowbloaded 360GB worth of torrents on my GS5 tethered to my PC. Currently getting 125Mbps.

I don't need my phone while I'm out today right?

    • +3

Do you need to go out? :)

    • +1

      serious!? screenshots/speedtests plz.

  • +1
  • +4

Just used speedtest to compare my two different net connections.

Vodafone Galaxy S2 USB tethered to computer
    http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3576496071
    PING 56 ms
    DOWNLOAD 8.96Mb/s
    UPLOAD 3.19Mb/s

    Telstra Bigpond ADSL 2
    http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3576499369
    PING 29 ms
    DOWNLOAD 3.55Mb/s
    UPLOAD 0.71Mb/s

    • As I have a Galaxy S2 I am guessing that is 3G too?

Why are people still insisting Telstra is faster I don't know.

      • +1

        Yes its only 3G
To be fair I don't have a Telstra mobile to test the difference and my landline Telstra Bigpond ADSL 2 connection does vary in speed. Past speedtests range from 2Mb/s to 12Mb/s.

      • +1

Telstra is just about always faster if you compare like for like, I say just about because I'm sure they're locations where the competition win. Here for instance if I am using telstra I'd be getting 4g speed as opposed to 3g, so I end up getting around 30-40 mb/s. Now if I use a telstra reseller such as boost, my speed will drop down to around 15-20 mb/s. On Vodafone in same location I'm looking at between 2-8 mb/s. My home connection is faster than my vodafone 3g, not complaining though, 2-8 mb/s is plenty fast enough for the most part. :)

      • +1

        324 gb(megabit months) into 360 gb, '1.1111 mb/s committed,'
        that's the home broadbandequivalent-type of stuff ;).

I've already dowbloaded 360GB worth of torrents on my GS5 tethered to my PC. - scottg87 8 hours 43 min ago ¶

         24 * 3600 * 30 * 0.125MBs =
        324000MB

    • +4

      DOWNLOAD 19.70 Mbps
      UPLOAD. 5.76 Mbps
      PING 33 ms

That's 4G wifi at Cranbourne, Victoria.

  • +2

The speed seems to downgrade after each cap (displaying 'insufficient fund' and having to restart the device). Is it just me or does anyone else experience this?
