[Vodafone] Unlimited Mobile Data Usage Weekend (FREE) from Midnight (AEST) Friday 20 June to 3am Monday 23 June

2420
This post contains affiliate links. OzBargain might earn commissions when you click through and make purchases. Please see this page for more information.

Not sure if this was allowed, however I do believe people need to know about this because not everyone would have experienced the issues (i.e. half of Sydney). Thus even if this gets moved to the forums hopefully it reaches enough people so that they know to DESTROY THE VODAFONE NETWORK!

Absolutely unlimited mobile data usage FREE OF CHARGE, EHRMAGHERD!

Seriously, if you are on Vodafone. Take advantage and just download whatever you want, watch Youtube, just absolutely demolish it especially if you guys use smartphones. Just use Personal Hotspot / Tethering (Same Thing), and just KILL DAT DATA!

Enjoy you OzBargainers!

From a Store Rep of Vodafone jimbobaus:

It will work for all numbers which were active on the Vodafone network between the hours of 1pm and 5pm Thursday June 19th 2014 (AEST)

Thus buying a $2 SIM will NOT work for this offer. Sorry, unlucky.
Mixed messages, and different sources of information concede different viewpoints. We'll have to wait and see if purchasing a SIM tomorrow will enable users to take advantage of this offer.

From some mad kid:

EVERYONE I JUST RECEIVED A CALL BACK FROM VODAFONE POCKET WIFI ARE INCLUDED IN THE UNLIMITED WEEKEND!!!!!

Pocket Wifi has seem to be approved for use 3G + 4G.

REMEMBER THOUGH: IT STARTS AT 12AM FRIDAY and ENDS 3AM MONDAY AEST!
(Starting Friday Night/Saturday Morning)

Note: NEVER seen Optus or Telstra do ANYTHING like this before.
Note: I like this offer. Period.

filled with humility due to the ironic sarcasm

    • +4

I completely agree on Telstra, but you pay for that privilege!
As for Optus, I'll just assume that you live nearby a tower and don't get out of home much!

      • +1

My bill for Telstra is insane…

      • +3

Boost is basically Telstra and is cheap.

        • +1

I have to disagree with this, Boost is only able to use the maximum 3G and thus is limited in many ways. Yes it uses Telstra's network, and it is cheaper. However, the mobile data output rate is terrible. This is just my personal opinion however.

        • +3

Well if we are talking about 4G then everyone is too expensive ;)

        • Go with vaya 18$ plan
          4G
          1.5gb data
          650$ call credit
          unlimited sms

        • +1

Looks like a decent bang for buck - any personal reviews guys?

    • +3

      No reason to neg bro.

      • Technically, it's still within the rules of "manufacturer/service provider issues". Everyone has an opinion :)

    • +4

You are wrong. Optus had the same issue today

  • +1

    From Vodafone:

At approximately 11.00am (AEST), services across Western Australia were impacted by a transmission network failure. As we were restoring services at approximately 1.00pm (AEST), problems occurred which had an impact on our network nationally. By 4.00pm (AEST) all network services were restored nationally except for data services in Western Australia, which were restored gradually from 5.20pm (AEST).

As an apology to our customers, we are offering unlimited data usage within Australia from midnight (AEST) Friday 20 June to 3.00am (AEST) Monday 23 June 2014. Please feel free to share all of this information with customers, family and friends.

No network can guarantee that it won’t experience issues from time to time, and I want to personally thank the many people across the company who leapt into action to resolve the issue and ensure all key stakeholders were informed as quickly as possible. Many of you are continuing to work throughout the evening and I thank you.

    A vodafone staff.

  • +2

This will wind up being very entertaining if people smash it out a day early.

    • +3

Yeah but we've posted as much as we can to get people to NOT do that. And so just as a reminder.

PLEASE DO NOT START USING MOBILE DATA EXCESSIVELY UNTIL SATURDAY JUNE 21ST!

  • +2

I don't want to go over my data plan (250mb) and pay astronomical excess fees. Is there any way to validate this for WA users? A text notifying me would be sufficient.

    • +2

Unfortunately, it will not. However, reading through the comments and keeping a tab on that link and the replies from the actual Vodafone staff is quite helpful. So far, the answer to that question has just been that it will be automatically invoked at the posted times.

Callison ::: Go to this voda page on your phone:

      http://www.vodafone.com.au/personal

      Click on "find out more"

      I am also in Perth

      • I usually text 1512 to check my balance and save data. Cheers though!

  • +2

    DOES THIS INCLUD VODA 4G?

IF YES IM GOING TO BUY A SIM CARD TOMORROW IF JUST 3G THEN MEH LOL

    • +2

Yes, this includes the 4G, but I believe to this date that SOME parts of Australia do not have 4G currently. You can check by quick Google searches however! Hope that helps!

      • +2

im in parramatta i get voda speed over 100mbps
im going to have soo much fun

        • +1

one more question sorry for being annoying do i have to recharge or can i simply buy a sim activate and get free data for the weekend?

        • +1

From pure speculation it seems that you will probably be able to just buy a $2 sim, activate it on Friday, have it ready by Friday afternoon. And be using Mobile Data on a smartphone preferably for 4G (LTE for iDevices), and do whatever for the weekend.

        • +1

          :D
sim card going in spare phone this weakend i guess lol
          nexus 5 ftw

        • +7

Vodafone Website is selling for $1 only

should able to pricematch BigW or JB for $1
          or OW for $0.95

        • +5

          True OzBargainer ^

        • +2

How the hell do you have a Nexus 5 as a 'spare' phone?

        • +1

nexus 5 is my main phone i have a shitty LG L3 as a spare phone in my computer desk lol.

      • +5

Wouldn't be surprised if it was limited to only sims activated before today.

    • +4

Would be great to smash out the 4G for 51 hours for free!!!

      • ill let you know how much i get downloaded.
i could easily download hundreds of gigs of movies steam games and music.

        • Hell yeah. Stuff using the home plan.
Would be good if it was Telstra as I have a 4G wifi for work that destroys the home line for speed… But costly for big data usage!!!

        • that's a wonderful idea :)
could be great for people stuck on slow fixed connections…

        • +4

that's if you aren't plagued by time outs and dropped connections due to their infrastructure getting hammered :/
however I for one plan on downloading an entire internet :)

  • +1

"From Midnight Friday 20th of June" - I can't believe they are saying this - it's completely misleading if they mean tomorrow night and not tonight. 12:00am Friday the 20th of June AEST is right now.

If anyone got charged for this I think they'd have a case for a refund.

    • +1

I'll be honest. They shouldn't have even posted this today. It should have been posted well technically later today. But I can see that it can cause quite an issue, but we've tried to limit it with the help from various power-users here on OzBargain to fix things up for me!

  • +3

They are trying to ensure that problems won't happen on their network again, by offering unlimited data for the weekend ? Sounds like a genius plan :/ Either way i've got unlimited internet at home amyway. It's a shame I'm a hermit.

    • +3

      It's a shame I'm a hermit.

Not particularly true, this allows you to post more bargains for us OzBargainers! Nah jokes, what's wrong with wanting to stay home? I prefer it. And there's always some Jv entertainment around OzBargain.

      • +1

I meant from the standpoint of taking advantage of the mobile data offer ;)

        • +1

Fair enough. And you can always give your phone to someone (preferably someone you trust), and allow them to use it especially if you know someone that's underprivileged?

  • +5

I'm just here to say that the girl in the picture is hot. That is all.

    • +1

      Such irrelevant
      Much levels

  • +4

Awesome. Will be getting a $2 sim tomorrow. Thanks for posting.

Crazy deals today. The eBay stuff, free protein sample, woolworths groceries and now the sim. Yes!

    • +3

Please understand that we're not 100% sure that buying a SIM NOW will guarantee you usage for this. However i'm sure a tonne of people will be trying this.

      • Also - if you're gonna get a sim just activate it as a new number. Not worth porting (if you need to break a month to month postpaid plan like amaysim). Just do call forwarding on your existing number for the weekend should you receive any calls, and if you need to call/text use VOIP.

        • +4

It will work for all numbers which were active on the Vodafone network between the hours of 1pm and 5pm Thursday June 19th 2014 (AEST)

        • What about wifi sims please? We have both 3G and 4G Vodafone wifis.
Please? I don't believe the statement clarifies this; just says all Vodafone customers.

          Thank you.

    • +1

Awww what an awesome day for Ozbargainers :)

Ive been at it since 7pm last night LOL

I keep having to send my page to the back every time the missus walks past :) And hide my Mastercard hahahaha

      cheers

EOFYS is also nearing. Can't wait for the mass of sales on technology! I'm going to be broke, very very soon.

  • +1

Anyone know if it works with Lebara aswell??

    • +2

As an MVNO, it is believed that it will not work for Lebara, HelloMobile etc. Will keep this post updated to cater for those that are using the MVNOs. Hope this helps.

    • Will keep updating this post for the MVNOs.

    • +2

Pls check with Lebara. Unlimited data usage is a vodafone decision and might not be applicable to Lebara.

      • I am a Lebara user and this is what I got from SMS:
FREE DATA WEEKEND! UNMETERED DATA on ALL LEBARA PLANS from midnight Friday 20th June until 3AM Monday (AEST). Browse freely with Lebara 3G+ High Speed Internet!

  • -1

Time to fire up the LOIC and see if i can max out my areas tower bandwidth.

    • I don't think that'd be very nice to the rest of your area.

  • omg. I'm on Vodafone 365 and my account is from $3 to $0 when I open youtube…..
    Doesn't work for me.

    • +3

Please don't use mobile data until Saturday MORNING

      • wtf, it states "from midnight (AEST) Friday 20 June to 3am (AEST) Monday 23 June 2014."
        F this.
Edit: omg, my bad different time zone

        • +1

          EDIT: Commenter Edited

THUS I FELT LIKE EDITING, STOP READING THIS COMMENT

  • +3

As someone who is associated i can say this is a pretty awesome way of saying sorry.
It was not only Vodafone who was affected Thursday, but it seems they are the ones who are at least saying sorry.

    Good on them :)

    • -1

From midnight Friday 20 June means starting of Friday 20 (now)? or ending of Friday 20 (after 12pm tmr)?

      • +2

It's Saturday Morning 21st of June.

      • +2

Correct… consider it 12.01 am saturday morning so there is no confusion

    • +5

I hope for Vodafone's sake that it doesn't backfire by slowing the network to a crawl. I don't use Vodafone but Australia needs them, a Telstra/Optus duopoly would be a disaster for consumers.

      • +2

        Touche … We'll said.

  • yes!

    • @ adfffff

      . #yes !

  • +1

I have a vodafone pocket wifi, does anyone know if this is included (it does technically have a vod sim)?
    cheers

    • No sorry, I do not currently believe that is the case. It's only available to Vodafone SIMS that hold calls, and texting ability. If anything comes up, i'll be sure to post it here.

  • lol whatever i have had unlimited data with optus for years now, for 2 dollars a day.

    (profanity) off vodafone

    • +1

      which plan is this?
could you post a link please?

      • they do not have for new numbers anymore unfortunately, but i am still on it.

        • Mother's Vodafone 3G wifi is only $39 pm for 12 GB; more than happy with it.

  • w00t.. where did I leave that skanky 365 days sim.. gonna destroy it Fri night till that sim slot is sore and ruined and come Monday be like.. 'do I know you biatch??' takes me back..

    • +2

Thank you for that insightful story ahaha. Enjoy the downloading spree.

  • +1

I have one active Voda Sim card "No plan" or "Pay As You Go" Can I enjoy this offer?

    • +2

Yes you can! It's for anyone that was active on Thursday between 1:00PM - 5:00PM on the Vodafone Network including prepaid, pay-as-you-go, and plan holders! Enjoy! Hope that helps.

  • What a load of CRAP!! how can they say text messaging was NOT affected? I couldn't text, call, receive texts. My phone was absolutely useless besides my wifi. My mum is also on the crazy John network and she had the same God damn problem. VODA FAIL….. BIG TIME.

    • +1

Well, that was the situation for MOST Vodafone users and MVNOs. If you've experienced something worse, I believe taking it up in the comments section of this community link would be the best course of action.

  • It's been 2 years now since I moved 2 of my plans to Vodafone from Optus…no regrets..and this free data is a bonus. Vodafone keep up the good work.

  • +1

When you say "active on the Vodafone network between the hours of 1pm and 5pm Thursday June 19th 2014 (AEST)" do you mean we had to use or do anything with our phone in that period, or just as long as we have a contract with them at that time?

    • +2

No, he just means it was using the Vodafone network. Like just having it ON, that's all.

  • 12am Friday is not Friday night/Saturday morning. It Thursday night/Friday morning. If they said 11:59pm it would be Friday night/Saturday morning.

    • +2

      There's been quite a debacle already…

  • You won't be able to get on this Sunday

    • +3

      Please explain?

      • +2

It will be down once again

  • Is anyone still having problems with their vodafone connection? I'm in the Melbourne CBD and have no reception this morning (again) :(

    • Our Cranbourne and Frankston mobiles did not experience any problems at all during this debacle.

  • +1

+1 for the hot girl blowing bubblegum

  • +1

I don't understand why many people don't like Vodafone. Honestly I think their customer services are far better than most similar size companies here.

    • Neither do I; we (running 3 mobiles and 2 wifis) have had no problems; first class customer service. Virgin (ex 3G wifi broadband) customer service people first class too - just a shame our area became too congested.

  • So I have a Voda data SIM that was activated but not actually turned on during the outage.
It sounds like it WONT be eligible?
It also sounds like any SIMS registered after the event WONT be eligible?

Can a Voda person confirm this?

  • I only have 200MB left. Will I still retain that data on Monday if I download everything tomorrow?
