Monster Brand HDMI Cable -- M1000HD, 8 Feet $47.70 Delivered from Ozstock.com.au

56

Very good price for Monster cable!
RRP $399 apparently!
Personally I'd never pay anything close to that for any cable, but $50 is pretty decent even for generic cables

This is a horrible deal considering the $5-8 (shipped!) 2m HDMI cable deals posted earlier, over which this Monster cable carries absolutely no real-world performance benefit. Unless you plan to re-sell it to some unknowledgable sucker for a high price, this is a bad deal.

Good deal if you intend to capitalise though.

You can get a 5M cable (16 feet) HDMI cable from MSY for $10…don't tell me because it's a Monster cable, it's better…it's a digital cable :)

not a good deal for me, sorry mate. Monster cables are a rip-off.

  • There's a ton of these available as buy-it-nows on eBay Australia for a similar price, whereas US listings have the price set at around 3 times as much.

    Interesting.

    $400 RRP? LOL

    No deal

It is a good price if you want to buy a Monster cable.
And someone please don't compare the cable to a generic MSY cable.
Granted that over a short distance, the signal will not degrade appreciably, but if you have to carry high bit-rate digital data over a longer distance, it can lead to severe problems with signal degradation.
This will be especially be noticeable when transmitting deep colours and audio codecs that require a higher bandwidth, and more 0 and 1 to be transmitted.
Even if out of 150000 combination of 0 and 1 , say 5 are lost, then the receiver on the other side may be able to correct the signal distortion and you get very good quality.
But after a certain threshold, the receiver will be unable to cope, and the signal output quality will deteriorate. However, this is NOT very noticeable over short distances, where the signal is not distorted to such and extent that you cannot correct it.

I will give an analogy. Are all Ethernet cables same? A category 5 cable has different specs and performance, a category 5e has different, and category 6 is different even when carrying the same signal.
However, for most practical purposes, category 5e suffices.

Another analogy- I am taking it to an extreme, I know- fake diamonds vis-a-vis real diamonds.
An untrained eye may not be able to make out the difference between real and fake diamonds. Both have the same lusture, but still the real diamonds are priced higher.
If someone says that the real diamonds are available for half price, you vote it down saying that nah, who wants a real diamond, when you can get fake diamonds for quarter of a price.
What about the people who want to buy a real diamond?

Similarly, the quality of Monster cables is better- however,
    1. You may not have the equipment that transmits very high bandwidth
    2. The eye is not trained to distinguish between these subtle differences
    3. The distance is not large.
In either of the three, buying a generic cable will suffice, as you cannot tell the difference.

However, this deal is for a good price for monster cable, and we should not vote negative just because it is expensive, but higher quality.
    Cheers,

agreed… it's like comparing SONY and TCL
one has a higher RRP than the other with a perceived 'quality' difference.

if for instance SONY had a 40" lcd for $1500, as much as it's not as cheap as a TCL 42" lcd for $1100…. it'll still be a bargain

Dude, it's nothing like comparing TV brands.

      • +1

TVs have many other technologies in them besides just brightness, contrast ratio and resolution sizes. you're comparing apples and oranges. hdmi cables are just hdmi cables…internally, they're all the same…maybe some have better shieldings, some don't…but over 8 feet, none of that makes a difference.

[EDIT] Just noticed you've just bought a Monster cable yourself, qtvinsta…http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/14849...good luck with that!

      • people here have been fortunate not to experience the problems that can occur with hdmi cables. digital cables by definition should either work or not, but this is not always the case and some do sometimes work with lots of errors in the picture and audio as i have experienced. I must admit that the 1.5m gold plated crests that cost the most of my collection of hdmi cables have had the least amount of issues and i paid $25 (after negiotiating) for them.

        • i agree that monster cables have really stupidly high RRPs. But that aside, $39.80 for 2.43 metres of 'quality' branded hdmi cable is cheap. I've hunted for ~3m name branded hdmi cables at a lot of stores and in my opinion $39.80 has to be one of the cheapest branded hdmi cables around.

    • +2

umm…this cable is 8feet long… it's not a 100m long cable where signal degradation could even possibly be a problem. I know you're trying to help the poster but please stick to the relevance here.

HDMI cables are like USB cables, one brand is as good as another because they're only used to transmit digital signals. Likewise VGA cables, or the ole' Parallel cables and Serial cables, as well as of course, the ubiqutuous Ethernet cables. Most of these cables have a set distance before signal degradation is a problem and thus need a signal amplifier to carry through the signals, but we're talking big figures here like 100m for Ethernet cables.

Digital signals are much more resilient against signal degradation problems than analog signals. That's why major review websites on the net (gizmodo, engadget, cnet, etc) all condemns Monster cables as a rip-off. Monster cable as a company plays on unsuspecting customers and profits off their ignorance. Is it all the company's fault? Of course not. The customers have a part to blame too for not researching properly, but the company's not acting ethically and thus have drawn fire from many quarters. And the problem with profiting off ignorance? People don't stay ignorant for long.

This is an 8 foot cable! In terms of what product you get and what function it serves, it is no better or worse than the Jamell etc. $5-8 cables also posted here.

Hence the price has to be LOWER than this (or at least around it) to be considered a good deal. $50 is higher than $5-8, in case you didn't notice.

Perhaps if the cables were all on the front of devices and in plain sight, then you could justify it from a cosmetic/showing off standpoint (sort of like the people who wear brand-name clothes with the tag on the outside rather than on the inside.)

And I've yet to see any proof that it is actually better than a cheap cable; I personally run a 15m cheapo $50 HDMI cable from my HTPC to my 720p projector, parallel to power and audio cables, and have NEVER noticed any performance problems.

There is NOTHING good about this deal apart from an opportunity to capitalise by selling to some poor suckers who are obsessed with lab results and not real-world performance.

Big negative for me on this deal…. Monster cables are the biggest rip off going.

HDMI cables can be sourced for much cheaper elsewhere (not just MSY) and performance wise are the same as Monster cables.

In fact, only monster cables can charge $300 for a gold plated optical cable!

    • +2

      correct

  • +3

folks - can I suggest before you buy a monster cable you do your research. Monster cables are a total ripoff, and on some quick research you will learn that it's not necassary to spend this much on an hdmi. Particularly over a short distance.

There are MANY stores around that sell quality cables for a quarter of the price of this 'bargain'.

Can we stop with all these rediculous analogys?

    • +1

      applauds

    • thank you for your post, please let me know where i can get these ~3m gold plated branded hdmi cables for $10? I and several other friends would like to buy them.

      • who said it had to be branded to be quality?

I get my HDMI cables from Jamell (jamellcables.com.au), they currently have 2m ones for $7.95 but run some specials every now and then. I bought 3 and they're all excellent quality. There is another company doing cheap cables that posted their deal on here as well, do a search.

"It never pays to buy a Monster cable first."

Long distances? Yes…it might be worth the investment for a Monster cable. But this is only a Monster 8 foot cable so -ve from me.

  • +2

Ok guys, Monster Cable only matters if the cable goes 10m plus in length and it really, really matters when you are running it through walls or near electrical interferences such as power and comm cables.

This 8 feet one is way too short for anything practical.

Most HDMI cables can carry a solid signal up to 10m.

    • +1

Even for 15m you don't need this cable. And remember this cable is mostly just overpriced, don't think that this cable is just so high quality that you don't need it, its just that its decent quality and overpriced.
