Get $50 for Opening a Transaction Account with HSBC (No Monthly Fees, New Customers Only)

790

I was in a HSBC branch today, and noticed this flyer.

Open a day to day transaction account with HSBC from Monday 16th June to Tuesday 30th September 2014, make a Visa Debit card purchase within one month of account opening, and you will receive a $50 cash deposit into your account.

This is for new accounts only, and all existing day to day account holders are excluded from the offer. (ie, opening a second account won't make you eligible). If you have other products with HSBC, you should have no problem qualifying for this offer.

From speaking with the branch assistant at HSBC, if you are eligible for the offer, the $50 will be deposited into your account the following month, in the next interest cycle.

This account has no monthly fees, fee free deposits at Bank@Post, and fee free withdrawals at all Westpac, Bank of Melbourne, St George, BankSA and HSBC ATMs.

As always, check whether this product is right for you and your financial objectives before applying.

I registered about the 16th of June I think, made my purchase on the 25th. Got the money on Friday (4th July).

Here's what the online rep said when I asked last week:

We appreciate the time you have taken to send us an email regarding your HSBC Day to Day account. Please note that when customer meets the eligibility criteria, HSBC will reward them with AUD 50.00 cash back into their newly opened Day to Day account. Further, the eligibility requirement is as follows:

      • Customer has not had a Day to Day account previously
      • Customer must make an eligible transaction on their Visa Debit Card within 1 month of account opening. (eligible transactions exclude: ATM withdrawals, interest payments, fees and charges)

Generally, AUD 50.00 payments will be made within the 1st week of every month for eligible customers only. In case you were unable to receive your AUD 50.00 cash back, you may need to monitor your account as this might be posted on the following month provided that you are eligible for the promotion.

Since there's no monthly fee I was wondering if there's a good reason to close the account immediately (other than taking advantage of the next offer, hating the online processes or HSBC ethics). I received a welcoming phone call asking why I opened the account but I assume from here on out there's no more fuss.

I didn't really understand what the second password was going to be used for until I tried to login.

  • (profanity), I contacted them regarding my $50 bonus and was told that my account was opened on the 13th June and therefore, not qualified for it.

    That's BS!!

    • was that when your confirmation of approval email arrived?

      • 13th June.

I got my $50 without spending any money. Went to Australia Post and deposited some money into my card and that apparently counts as a (refund) purchase. Win!

  • I contacted them as I didn't not receive the bonus and they have said

"Please note that the campaign for the $50 cashback is effective for
accounts opened in between 16 June and 30 September. Since your
    account
was opened on 13 June we regret to advise that it is not eligible for
    this promotion"

I have replied back as it was definitely on the website and I have a saved page dated 13/6/14 to prove it. Will let you know what they respond with otherwise I guess I will contact the ombudsmen.

    • Hi, Can you please share the screenshot or html page?

        • thanks.

          @PissLUR:

Let me know how you get on, I am waiting to hear back from the "Customer
          Relations team"

        • @JordanM:

          @PissLUR:

Do let us know what happens. Thanks.

        • @dins:

So I finally got the $50 in my account, I recommend everybody that has not received it yet to contact Customer Relations and mention that it was advertised when you applied and if you do not receive a satisfactory response you will contact the Ombudsmen.

        • @JordanM:

          Cheers mate :)

  • any one signed up on 13th June and was successful with the $50?

  • What's the deal did they change terms afterwards?
The offer was on their site and it mentioned no 16th of June. Only said by 30th Sep?

  • Signing up with them is a HUGE pain.
    ING is so much better.

  • most dodgy bank ever
had an account with em years ago and closed, now still considered as "existing customer"
question: how is it legal to still hold my personal information after i closed account this long ago?

    worst internet banking experience ever

    • Having worked for a big 4 bank, I can tell you your information NEVER gets deleted, no matter how old (unless they manage to screw up… which happens).

  • I got my approval email on the 13th of June as well, and I haven't got my $50 yet.

  • im waiting as well :(

Still waiting for the $50 bonus. Put 50c onto it at Aus Post and bought a soft serve at HJ with it and also got their free survey cheeseburger.

  • Opened 27th July, Bought some lollies for $5 on the 29th, received $50 on the 8th August.

Is there any other way to close your account other than visiting a branch?

    • yeah i got my $50 on the 8th as well.

would like to know if there's a way to close this hassle of a bank account online instead of at the branch. heck even transferring money was a bloody hassle with the damn security device.

      • Yes - I asked and you can fax in a written request (which I have done) BUT now they need a certified 100 point ID check faxed/sent in to prove I am myself… haven't done this yet.

Since it's not costing me fees I have put this off as it's a damn hassle to close. Not sure which is worse, trying to find/get to a branch in person, or getting certified copies of IDs scanned & sent back. Lol.

  • I got it on friday

  • Anyone know if paywave counts as a debit transaction?

    • +1

Yes it does, as long as you have transferred sufficent amount of money into your HSBC account to cover the cost of the transaction. Even though it may be processed through the Visa system, it is accessing your own money from your debit account.

  • +1

I've heard many people complain how difficult the security system is, but didn't think it would be that bad

    Oh my god.

    I was so wrong, haha

    I see now

  • I tried to open an account with them online. Entered TFN, D/L and medicare card but they still want me to do the manual verification. Icing on the cake was when I called in for clarification and was absolutely shocked to hear "To continue in Cantonese press 1, To continue in Mandarin press 2, to continue in English press 3". English as the third and not first choice? I thought we lived in Australia??? All this hassle for fiddy bucks aint worth it in my opinion. This bank needs to get into the 21st Century. But I'm thinking maybe I should just take their money anyway.

  • Yes, I got the same phone machine, then got shunted from person to person.
Finally got onto someone who knew what they were talking about,
apparently they didn't process my new account application (I applied over 3 months ago)
because I was a previous customer who had closed my account.
This is not allowed when applying online.
(You'd think they might inform me that my application was not approved)
But they said a manual (paper form) would be approved.

  • Even their manual verification is not acceptable at the post offices.

Doesn't help that their branches are ONLY in the city and the main East Asian suburb.

MIGHT take a trip to the city with the missus just to sort it out and 100 bucks.

  • Does a paypal transaction count as the spend?
