the problem with herbs is you are getting an unknown dose level of the active ingredients as well as other possibly unknown ingredients. herbs are not regulated like medicines.

The problem with herbs that "pharmaceutical companies don’t want you to get your hands on" is that it doesn't make sense.

If such a herb did had the alleged amazing medicinal properties, don't you think that the big pharmaceutical companies would be mass producing it and selling it?

And the idea of "alternative medicine" is ridiculous. It's either medicine or it's not medicine.

We don't have "alternative engineering", "alternative physics" or "alternative telecommunications".

Not necessarily, this is a total made up example but say if there was some herb that could treat some form of cancer, do u really think it's in their best interest to mass produce and sell if it was going to hurt their profits through losses from other revenue streams? No because at the end of the day they care about how much is in their pockets not how beneficial it will be to the person receiving the treatment. These are for profit organisations that help boost economic growth, in fact you can see from the medical funding in the budget, we are trying to gain a comparative advantage in exporting medicine in replacement of our losses in the manufacturing sector.

In regards to alternative medicine. I guess it depends on how you define things. If you see your prescribed medicine that you get from your pharmacies as conventional medicine, then you could definitely classify Chinese medicine as an alternative. I don't know about you but when you have a family member diagnosed with a cancer (curable or not) you'd be looking at all your options very carefully. Especially here in Australia, the wait times for treatment is ridiculous it's like they want you almost dead before they even do anything.

But "alternative engineering", "alternative physics" and "alternative telecommunications" I've never heard of those either.

      • The problem with these claims for alternative 'medicines' is that don't stand up to any actual testing. It is easy to claim an effect for something and produce anecdotes about how wonderful it is but genuine tests fail to back up their claims.

Of course you could claim that all those tests are funded by 'BIG PHARMA'!!!!!. But you would be lying as I have taken part in conducting some drug and chemical trials, including 'natural' ones, and I have never seen the results skewed artificially to favour an ideology or financial agenda.

The truth is that if these foods or other 'natural' alternatives worked as well or better than more mainstream treatments it would be all over the internet and the news media. They don't and there is no sinister conspiracy to conceal the truth from the masses.

      • I usually wouldn't bother addressing this sort of stuff, but I have little else to do.

this is a total made up example but say if there was some herb that could treat some form of cancer, do u really think it's in their best interest to mass produce and sell if it was going to hurt their profits through losses from other revenue streams?

Umm, what? First, discovering a "herb" which could treat cancer would be a pretty difficult thing to conceal. Secondly, why would having the only patent on an effective cancer drug cost you money? You'd pretty much have the market cornered with a first-of-its-kind drug. If you had a cure, especially one that you didn't have to spend 100s of millions of dollars on R&Ding you'd be insane not to get it to market ASAP.

These are for profit organisations that help boost economic growth, in fact you can see from the medical funding in the budget, we are trying to gain a comparative advantage in exporting medicine in replacement of our losses in the manufacturing sector.

Private companies have to be profitable so they can make and sell drugs. The pharma industry isn't perfect, but name an industry that does no wrong. And as far as "for-profit" goes, go onto google and look up how much the alt. medicine industry makes annually. They aren't handing out anything for free.

In regards to alternative medicine. I guess it depends on how you define things. If you see your prescribed medicine that you get from your pharmacies as conventional medicine, then you could definitely classify Chinese medicine as an alternative.

No, you define medicine into categories of what works and how we know it works, and what is rubbish. Rubbish usually sold to naive Westerns who get sucked into believing exotic medicines are going to cure their problems. If some Chinese remedy can cure or alleviate a condition, offer a plausible hypothesis for how it works and then do the relevant testing to prove that is indeed how it works.

Alternative medicine is a meaningless term.

Especially here in Australia, the wait times for treatment is ridiculous it's like they want you almost dead before they even do anything.

Which has nothing to do whether a type of medicine it effective or not. You don't start taking quack remedies because the health system isn't perfect. That's like arguing when you have a headache but no paracetamol you just substitute it by eating dirt.

  • Thanks TA :-)

  • Reading Bible itself is quite healing. Herbal remedies are a bonus.

And yet when people turn up to hospital with advanced disease they've been 'treating' herbally, or with liver/kidney failure directly caused by their expensive remedies it's never the herbs fault - how can it be, they're 'natural'…
