Edit 2: Accroding to https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/147680#comment-2036228, you can chat with Amazon customer representative to argue the old cheaper price! Give it a try! Thanks msmhw!

Edit: Seems the price has gone up to US$99.99. Sorry folks, you blink, you miss! Will make it expired for the time being

US$89.99 for the drive itself. Cheapest price I've ever seen! Very reasonable shipping as well.
I bought two for AU$209.75 delivered to Sydney.

Some people say it's compatible with MAC. I can't confirm because I'm a happy PC user.

PS: I'm using Amazon's currency converter to get this price. Obviously you can save more if you have a 28 degree card. Since I don't own one, I'd rather Amazon rip off me than my bank. Cheers

  • Fully compatible with Macs. And Drobo Mini's :)

Good to hear macs now have USB ports

Good to see were still using USB when thunderbolt is something like 4x faster. Ohh wow USB 3.0 is so quick.. Naught!

    • Yeah it's definitely compatible with Mac, but I have been having some weird issues with mine being really slow to read the drive, but probably more a OS problem than a drive one.

      On windows it's fine.

    • Are you sure … I have some Seagate expansion drives (not this model so) and they work not prefect with a MAC (Of course you can format them in HFS+ …that is not the problem … but they power down and don't remount - you need to unplug them and plug them in again or restart the Mac … )> Might have changed with this newer models …

$96.92 US shipped via standard shipping = $103.86 AU with 28 degrees MasterCard or similar.

Similar to the Toshiba one last year - think that was ~$103 too from memory.
    Edit: Yup same price!

Windows Phone 8 IE browser fail - revoked accidental neg my apologies.
Damn I miss android and the "magnify links before clicking" feature of chrome :(

        • +1

No problem. Glad to hear 28 degrees card price. ^_^

  • awesome, thanks OP.

  • anyone know if it's a 9 or 12mm drive?

    • I know it's on the page if you look…

    • +1

http://bit.ly/1kKY9dR suggests it's a 9.5mm samsung spinpoint m9t, have ordered, will believe it when i see it.

      • Thanks a lot! I couldn't find the relevant info myself. According to your link, it's 9.5mm drive, not soldered. Makes it very good to take out to attach on laptops or PS4 etc.
It also means it's the World's Thinnest 2TB Laptop Drive with the highest platter density of any 2.5 inch hard drive to date, with 667 GB of capacity per platter.
        http://www.tomshardware.com/news/seagate-samsung-hdd-spinpoi…

        • Multiple online sources state it as being 9.5mm.

      • Bought 4 and pulled them out to use in a Drobo Mini. 9.5mm and plug in card for the usb port.

    • Damn you detective frumper! That makes it NUC compatible, cheaper than the "slim" version with the same drive. Trying hard not to bite on this one.

$138 at HN at the moment, if you registered an AMEX and want one can get at the same price picked up.

    Hi OP,

Maybe make the title a bit easier to understand by specifying that the hard-drive is 'bus powered' or 'usb powered'.

I thought it was a standard 3 1/2" externally powered drive until I read your description.

    Cheers!

    • +3

      Portable implies USB powered…

      • +1

        also a 2.5" form factor.

        • -1

This is in the description, not the title.

      • -3

'Portable' could mean external powered or usb-powered hard-drive.

It simply means that the drive can be detached from the computer.

        • Portable means 2.5" USB powered.

If a 3.5" externally powered drive is advertised as portable by a retailer, have a look at what the manufacturer calls it on their website. The word portable won't be in it.

    • +3

It's pretty clear from the title that it is usb powered, the term portable denotes this as does the price.

      • Dick-Smith sold externally powered 2TB USB hard-drives for $99 that were regularly on the front page of OzBargain.

    • Lol "bus powered"
I thought "portable" already implied 2.5" usb powered?

      • USB = Universal Serial Bus.

  • what is its difference with Seagate Expansion 2TB Desktop Hard Drive USB 3.0 which is available in dick smith with $109?

    http://www.dicksmith.com.au/usb-hard-drives/seagate-expansio…

    • The one from Dick Smith requires a power supply. This seagate one is portable, so it runs off the pc/laptop's power.

    • The one posted by OP is portable one (USB powered). DSE one is the desktop version (need to use a power adaptor and the drive is bigger)

      • Thanks so much for your clarification, understand that it is more or less like passport one.

  • Edit: meant to reply mrhoseiny
It clearly means "desktop" external hard drive. 3.5" AC powered.
From DS website, "Mains Powered" "Power Source AC Powered" 1.2kG!

Every single time, this has to be explained to the great unwashed. I thought they would have been all washed by now.

  • Price is quite good. Just Amazon don't really package computer items that well. Relying more on the original packaging.

Anyone confirm if this has a on off button?

If not does it turn itself off when not in use but still connected?

I have a WD My Passport but when it's plugged into my iMac and not in use it will blink a light at the rear of it, can't turn it off

Also the drive will stay on even when not in use and will only go to sleep when Mac does

    Anyone?

    • there wouldn't be any on/off button. you can 'safely remove' in windows, otherwise switch off the PC

    • Maybe a USB HUB with switches might be something you'd use.

    • Definitely no on/off button.

      • What about a light?

Added to cart and price has gone up to $99.99 - looks like page has refreshed to "new" price - damn..

  • -1

Hmmm.. $118.75 at the new price…with amazons currency convertor.

or $129.20 at Officeworks after pricematch with goodguys… (I just bought one to check out size) before ordering from amazon…

  • +2

To who ever missed the deal, if you chat with amazon that the price increased and you would like to buy it for the old price… They will do it for you

    • +1

      You are right…

Just ordered two at the old price… after confirming the drive model number from the one I bought from officeworks an hour ago…

Around $188.78 US fpr two … around $203 hopefully.. using the 28degrees card.

      Thanks for the advice…

Drive model number is ST200LM003 HN-M201RAD 2000.3GB according to Crystaldiskinfo
(Didn't have to open up the case)… I found this as a neat way to work out what drive is in an external case before cracking them open.

      • Thanks for the tip! ST200LM003 means Samsung Spinpoint M9T apparently.

        • Bought a couple to put in notebooks and PS3 / PS4

        • Yeah, will do the same.

      • Please explain the way of finding out what drive is inside the case!

        • Use a program called crystaldiskinfo
It interogates the drivevand gives you thenmodl and serial numbers without opening it…

    • LOL, never know you could do that!

  • Is this model same as what is posted here - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/147728 ?
