  • How can I possibly know if this is any good? Really need a flash/light on my Cannon for night use. Sucks at night. Tho that could just be my camera?

Hard to say if its any good, however be careful of the generic ones, the trigger voltage which goes back onto the camera is sometimes too high and may cause damage to the camera.

Read up on Trigger Voltage damage cameras.

It is reported that some flash causes a upwards of 200+ V back to the camera, which in short term may not cause damage but long term you are prob slowly killing circuitry.

If you decide to buy one of these, I'd suggest getting a safe sync adapter which acts sorta like a surge protector, it will voltage regulate the flash.

But at a combined cost of around $60-70 it is not worth buying this flash, you may as well get a Metz flash or Nissin Flash which are cheap and extremely good quality flash which should be made for your camera.

If you are using a DSLR or a Mirrorless DSLR, then make sure you buy the version of the flash which is meant for your brand, e.g. Four Thirds / Micro Four Thirds = Panasonic & Olympus. Or Sony, Canon, Nikon etc.

As getting the correct version allows you to use TTL or equivalent functions which sends the ISO and other info to the Flash via the Hotshoe which auto configures the flash for you. If you get the wrong version of the flash, then you may have issue using TTL functions.

Highly Recommended: Nissin Di622 - around $170 online, this one is one of the most popular third party flashes which does almost everything a high end flash does.

Don't get it from JB or in Australia, order it from overseas for ALOT cheaper.

      Sounds like a blast!!!

It's for shooting birds, you understand?

    • Note also this flash has no AF assist lamp, like many of the other brands (even the cheapies off eBay).

Low light performance will likely be sketchy at best.

  • If you value your camera, don't put cheap aftermarket crap on it.

      It won't harm your camera.

      • not instantly, it doesn't. thats not including image quality and all those compatibility issues. But of course its not so important for you

Yongnuo is a good cheap alternative to canon/nikon flashes. They look like canon speedlite knockoffs but they're not

    • Yeah, spend a bit more than $20, check out the Yongnuo 565,568. But just be careful as they do cheaper models that are manual flashes or slave flashes.

      • What's wrong with a manual flash? I use my 560II flash off camera and it works a treat. The cool thing about the better yongnou flashes unlike the flash for sale here is the ability to adjust power from full (1/1) to 1/128th power.

        • Nothing wrong with manual flash - unless you really wanted auto. Actually, I remember when I was younger, the quality of my night party photos, taken with fully manual camera and manual flash, would drop off to unusable as I got completely pissed. I then bought a fully auto Pentax SFXn with the Auto Pentax Speedlite and I would come home with a 95% keeper rate, even I was completely trashed.

The quality of the product I brought from them were poor.
