Okay, it has offline play now (locally-saved cities), it's been patched 10 times, has been granted limited modding support and the major, game-ruining bugs have been ironed out, but the city sizes are still too goddamned small and that limits the game like a bad case of gonorrhea in the Playboy Mansion.

You outgrow the land plots in about 4 hours of play. It's not a SimCity game. It's a glorified Sims neighbourhood builder, like in Sims 2 or Sims 3.

The endgame is micromanaging the living daylights out of commercial and industrial zones to maximise profit in your incredibly space-strapped city (you have to select tenants for commercial high-rises and upgrading industries); instead of just… getting to build more stuff, which is what SimCity should be.

The networked, multiplayer angle failed miserably… nobody gives shit about regional cities and cities cooperating. Everyone just wants to build New York by themselves and this game does not allow you to do that.

SimCity 4 + Rush Hour + the epic modding community is still the only definitive SimCity experience for me.

There isn't even subways or city laws.

Couldn't agree more. The tiny plots, as well as automatic zone-density make this game hardly worth playing. Why does the density of the road affect the street? Why can't I zone high density along my main street, then medium in my 'neighbourhoods' (like there's room for these, though, ha!).

Also traffic is almost impossible to avoid, even with apparently perfectly laid out roads in a very dense city. This means emergency services can hardly ever get to where they need to be, and everything fails.

Overall it's just frustrating and I was bored after 1-2 days of playing.

Thanks for taking the time to write that.

  • Last I checked in Sim City was still generally agreed to be a broken game. Impossible to build a proper city without in-game purchases and too easy if you get in-game purchases. But it's been a few months since I checked in.

And this is described as a 7 Mar 2013 release, possibly with earlier unpatched bugs.
