Had a look round for a grinds bin, came across this deal (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/116575). Seems most places are anywhere between $30-$50. Didn't have a massive look round, but from what i can tell its a good price for a coffee grind bin.

It was $2 flat postage to Tasmania, it appears to be $10 to some other areas

Also have no idea how many they have in stock.

$21 for a piece of plastic for waste? Kidding right? Can't you make one from a used milo tin and a long bolt or something?

    • +7

This is a logical argument. However, the wastes that will go in this bin will be from a group handle - whereby compressed coffee needs to be tapped out of a metal handle (~500g dry). Trying to tap-out the coffee on the kitchen sink, rubbish bin or bench-top is not ideal, and is really noisy. Hence the coffee bin. Designed to minimise noise and damage to your coffee group handle as you discard the used, compressed coffee 'puck'.

        Well played Sir

      • automatically hired to work for BL

    • For about the same you could get a can of Illy beans. Would make an OK bin after you drink the coffee :)

      • +3

May as well leave the illy beans in there since you're using it as a bin

        • Why the hate for Illy? Choice rated it highly in a double-blind test. Of course they didn't have to pay for it.

        • +2

Let me start by saying that if Illy is your preferred brew, I'm not going to try and convince you to drink something else, but this is why I don't drink it.
Number one reason is price. It is nearly $80/kilo,I drink a lot of coffee (500g/week) so compared to say, Lavazza - it will cost me a premium of around $1000 a year.
The thing is, I also don't drink Lavazza either (around $40/kilo) as I prefer to buy my coffee from a local roaster, not only to support Australian business, but because I'd like to know that my coffee wasn't roasted 6 months ago and then been shipped around the globe in who knows what conditions before making it to my coffee machine. There's at least 4 roasters who post on ozbargain all the time, charging $20-40/kilo delivered so you'll never be short of fresh, well priced coffee. Also, if you're in the market for a knockbox, you must have an espresso machine, which is pretty unforgiving when it comes to using old beans.

        • While they don't post on here, The Coffee Company in Melbourne is also great.
$8 shipping for Melbourne metro for an order up to 3kg.
Great tasting coffee ranging from $28 to $40 per kilo. I've been using them for over a year now and loving it.

    • This is actually a solid piece - the outside portion is a thick piece of aluminium

      Good price, good kit

  • Not sure about the postage equation - but I've got this grinds bin and I'm very happy with it. It replaced something that looked 'sharp' but wasn't terribly effective.

The Breville is nice and big. It holds plenty of grounds and the opening is perfect for knocking out the 'puck' without creating any mess.

Yes go a milo tin instead, you could buy 2 milo tins and a string and take orders from anywhere in the house via your new intercom!

  • If I had a house with more kitchen bench space and a garden, I'd buy one.

  • Coming up as $10 shipping for me in country Vic.

    • weird, i dont know how they work their postage costs, but i live in Rural Tasmania so i assumed if it was $2 to come from Sydney (???) to tassie it wouldnt be much more to go to other parts of the country.

      I've updated the title, cheers

I have this, it is really quite solid. The silver part is actually relatively thick metal, and the plastic inside pulls out so it is easy to wash. The only problem I have with it is that it is quite large, so depending on how much coffee you drink and how good your ventilation is, the coffee grounds can get mouldy if you wait until it is full to empty it. Overall I would probably get a Grindenstein knock box next time, just because this one does take up a lot of counter space. But it is good value for $21

  • Good deal! Have had mine for 5+ years and still going strong. We go through 2kg coffee a month to give some idea of how often we use it :)

  • Great! Thanks OP! We've been using a little plastic box and scooping it out with a spoon, so looking forward to having one of these.

The Breville one is better as the black plastic tub comes out of the metal bit for emptying and washing (normally $40-50). The Sunbeam one above can't be disassembled.

Good bargain, been looking for one of these bigger than came with my machine.

  • What are the dimensions of this?

    • Breville website says 7" x 6" x 7"

      • Brand: BREVILLE
        Product Code: BCB100
        Product Depth: 215mm / 21.5cm
        Product Height: 200mm / 20cm
        Product Width: 200mm / 20cm

Seems quiet large if your not a frequent coffee drinker. Anybody recommend something similar but smaller.

  • Thanks for the heads up! Myer have this on sale for $39.96

I bought one for about $40 a couple of years ago, I use it almost every day and it's great.

    This is an awesome price.
