10% off Store Wide at David Jones, Myer, JB Hi-Fi, City Beach +More Via 10% off Gift Cards @ Big W

2100

By taking advantage of the Big W Family and Friends 10% off storewide deal (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/146066) this weekend, you can effectively get 10% off storewide at a number of other stores by buying the desired store's gift card at Big W.

Step 1: Head to your local Big W this weekend with a printout of the flyer from the Big W 10% off deal.

Step 2: Go to the Gift Cards section (near Confectionery usually) and choose a gift card for the store you want 10% off at. These include:

  • Event Cinemas
  • Hoyts
  • Myer
  • David Jones
  • Jay Jays
  • Sportsgirl
  • Just Jeans
  • Smiggle
  • City Beach
  • Rebel Sport
  • Dymocks
  • BCF
  • Country Road
  • JB Hi-Fi
  • Kathmandu
  • Supercheap Auto
  • Dusk
  • The Iconic
  • AMF Bowling

and probably some others depending on what gift cards your local Big W has available.

Step 3: Purchase the gift card at the front registers for 10% off its price (e.g. a $100 Myer gift card will cost you $90).

Step 4: Redeem the gift card at the selected store. You'll have 12 months to redeem it.

EXCLUSIONS: 10% offer at Big W is not valid for any Woolworths Limited gift cards or WISH gift cards. All other gift cards are not excluded as far as I'm aware. Remember there's a $50 minimum spend at Big W to receive the 10% off offer.

Buy $50 ones, get 10% off then use your ING or ME Bank Paywave 5% discount if you have it!

    • +8

or buy $100 ones and throw in a 5c coin as part payment

      • +23

You guys realize if you buy a $100 voucher you will get it for $90. So need for any 5c coins.

        • lol oh yes… in that case $100 + $10 or $50 + 3 x $20

    • +1

And use staff discount for another 5% off!

      • Staff discount doesn't stack with the BigW 10% offer. It just removes the $50 minimum spend limit.

Unless you were talking about staff discounts for the store on the gift card.

    • Would ING block your card if you tried to buy 2 x $100 giftcards in separate transactions same day?

      • +3

No, they wouldn't, I bought many items with $99 x2 x2 x4….and still using the INGcard well.

        • But once you are on their list (after a courtesy-warning call) , they keep an eye on all you transactions. Once they find evidence of splitting, even by 2, you get kicked. That's what happened to me.

        • +1

Hope I make it then, brought 10 x $100 jb yesterday and 9 x $50, managed to get lady to put them all thru separately, it was hard to maintain small talk whilst letting other shoppers know we would be a while :)

        • Hard to maintain small talk? Only if you are not interested in the girl.

  • any prepaid visas? :)

    • I think so (have not been to Big W in the last ~2 months).

Though there is a $5.95 fee on top of the face value…

    • If it's the same pre-paid cards that Woolies sell, depositing money on the card counts as an EFT deposit and not a sale therefore won't be discounted.

  • good idea thanks!!

need to buy something from Rebel on the w/end

    • Let me know if anybody want a Myer gift card. I bought 2 x $50 ones thinking that I would buy something for my wife's B'Day. But I ended up buying a watch from David Jones today as Myer only had the Gold colour watch of that model and wifee wanted silver.
I don't see anything I need to buy from Myer any soon. If anyone who missed this deal and need to buy something from Myer and live around Glen Waverley, Mulgrave, Clayton, Springvale area PM me. I can give it for my cost which is $90.

  • Tks op!
    JB :)

  • -2

So I could buy $950 worth of Myer gift cards for $855, paying $812.25 for them with ING paywave, and then go snap myself up a 64GB Wifi/Cellular iPad Air? Tempting.

    • +8

Ing will probably void the cash back as you're buying … gift cards on several transactions..

They called me cause I split 2 items worth in total 130 on 2 transactions to take advantage of rebate. Warned me never to do it again lol

      • True - might have to stick with just the one gift card, so $850 total. $100 off the iPad Air is still pretty decent!

        • If it helps AMEX have a "spend $500 get $50" at Myer until tomorrow (which you have to opt-in for). I was thinking of a way to use that in conjunction with the Myer Christmas Club thingie coupled with TRS…any ideas?

      • +2

Do it over a few hours, so pop in before work, before lunch, after lunch etc…. All these will be separate transactions and u should be fine.

      • I do this all the time at the supermarket, buy over $100 and split the payment into 2 or 3 paywaves, never been called by ING.

    • Buy 8 * $100 wish gift card from RACV shop if you are a RACV member for $760. Use your normal credit card to pay for more reward points.

Buy 9 * $100 Myer gift card + a $50 Myer gift card at Big W. Total cost at register = $855. Pay it using 8 * $100 wish gift card, and balance of $55 using ING paywave = $52.25.

Same $812.25 out of your pocket without breaking any ING rules. Sounds like the plan?

      • It will trigger warning sign if you use gift card buy other gift cards. I ad it happened at Woolworths.

I used discounted DSE gift card to buy woolies cards at DSE. That part went through fine.

I then use woolies cards I got from DSE to buy David Jones cards at woolies. This step was not so smooth. They had to seek instruction from head office.. I got it eventually FYI..

  • -3

    Do they have Woolworth's Group

  • Seems like they took effort to exclude most if not all gift cards…worth a try i suppose!

"…all Wish Gift Cards and all Woolworths Limited Gift Cards including BIG W, Woolworths, Safeway,
Woolworths Petrol, Safeway Petrol, Dan Murphy’s, BWS, Cellar Masters, Essentials, Groceries Only and Masters Gift Cards."

    • I saw it as Woolworths-owned giftcards not Rebel or JB-Hi-Fi ones, as they are not owned by them.

  • Anyone know if they have Coles gift cards?

    • I think that's included with the Myers gift card. (Target, Kmart)

      • I would double check. I have a Myer gift card (received as an actual gift - shock horror), and it's specifically for Myer only. There are also "Coles Myer" gift cards that cover the whole Coles/Myer group, but Myer gift cards are just for Myer.

    • Yes, they also have rival store Coles, Kmart and TarJ gift cards.
BigW is owned by Woolies. What is the answer?

    • +1

No they don't. Myer gift cards at BigW are just for Myer. They are not Coles Myer gift cards.

Coles group sells Coles Myer gift cards, which can be used at Myer as well as Coles, Kmart, Target Officeworks etc etc.

  • +3
    1. Buy $1000 of gift cards for $900
    2. Use $1000 gift cards to buy $1111 of gift cards
    3. Use $1111 gift cards to buy $1234 of gift cards
    4. Profit!
    • How does step 2 onward work please explain?

      • If BIGW/Woolworths gift cards were part of the deal, you could buy some and use them to buy more gift cards at 10% off. Do this enough times and you start to make money.

        • -1

Your if is invalid if you lookup the t&c exclusion list.

        • Just noticed this post. This is something I posted int he original BIG W F&F deal post but it is probably more relevant in this one:

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/146066#comment-2017940
Thanks. I assuming one reason for the exclusion of the purchasing of the Wish gift cards is to prevent us buying more gift cards with our just purchased gift cards and starting a nasty discount cycle. :-)

That all being said, does Big W sell Coles gift cards? (yes I know they are a competitor). If they do, what is to prevent us from buying a bunch of Coles gift cards and buying lots of Woolworth/Wish gift cards at the local Coles, then going back to Big W to buy more gift cards (using out freshly purchased Woolworth chain gift cards) and doing the cycle that way? You can probably justify it by saying that you have 10 x $100 WISH gift cards and want to merge them into two $500 ones (plus the extra 10% bonus).

          Thoughts anyone?

As a reference, please find below the current exclusions from the PDF:

Exclusions include Apple iPads, unlocked Apple iPhones, Apple iPods, Samsung Tablets, Samsung Galaxy S5, tobacco & cigarettes cartons and packets, all Wish Gift Cards and all Woolworths Limited Gift Cards including BIG W, Woolworths, Safeway, Woolworths Petrol, Safeway Petrol, Dan Murphy’s, BWS, Cellar Masters, Essentials, Groceries Only and Masters Gift Cards

If in a Westfield centre buy Westfield gift cards…

        • WW don't sell coles and coles don't sell ww.

        • Woolworth doesnt sell coles gift card if i remember correctly. I think they thought it through to prevent all of this shenanigans.

        • I also thought about buying eg. Coles gift cards, then going to Coles and buying Woolies gift cards. But some research indicates that none of the retailers whose gift cards are on offer at BIGW reciprocate by selling Woolies gift cards.

I think the suggestion of buying a Westfield gift card is the best idea.

        • Excellent. Now to check out Westfield Doncaster thus weekend.

          Theory now is to:
          1. Buy $1000 Westfield gift card at Big W (cost $900)
          2. Use $1000 Westfield gift card to purchase more $1100 of Westfield gift cards (or maybe $1110)
          3. Rinse and repeat

I'm pretty sure the above cycle will be stopped pretty soon so maybe add in a step where you convert the $1000 Westfield gift card into a Wish gift card and then use that to purchase the $1110 of Westfield gift cards.

Don't know but it is an interesting theory to toy with.

    • Excludes Wish gift cards

      • Could you buy a pre-paid visa card (with $5.95 fee) with the discounted giftcards (bought with 10% + ING 5%) and then with the prepaid visa card you then buy more giftcards (getting 10% off) and then top up the prepaid visa card with the gift cards you just bought with it and then buy more discounted giftcards, etc?

        • There's nothing to stop you from doing that, but just be aware that there is a 24 hour blackout window for the pre-paid visa so you can only apply this trick once, not multiple times

          For example you can do:

On Saturday: Buy $100 pre-paid visa with $5.95 fee so $95.36 cost at register. Pay with ING 5% off, this is about $90.60 out of pocket.

On Sunday: Buy $100 gift card of your choice for $90, using your pre-paid visa card so leaves you $10 in the card for other purposes.

So $90.60 outlay to get $100 gift card of your choice plus $10 left in your pre-paid gift card.

And any reasonable OZbargainer will buy another $100 pre-paid visa again on Sunday while in the shop anyway to squeeze out another $9.40 :)

    • -1

You can't make any profit since you first hand them your money.

  • anyone knows that can I buy 25 giftcards to buy a camera at JB?

    • In store maybe.

    • to buy a camera at JB?

      Maybe even a sony e-reader

      • Any processing fee?

    • You can use as many gift cards as you want.

Last time i use 5 to buy an Xbox. But i think entering 25 gift cards will take quite sometimes.

    • Yes you can! I've used about 50 giftcards to buy a fridge and an air conditioner for my house. Took a while though

  • Can you use Myer GC to buy iTunes GC?

    • +1

Why not? But why dont wait for HN iTunes cards BOGOF sale?

    • 1.2 Exclusions
The following are the exclusions applicable to the redemption of your Gift Card:
      .
      .
      c. Gift Cards cannot be used to purchase Gift Cards or other tender;

      • I guess can try

  • Would this include Nintendo eShop game cards? I'm pretty sure I've seen them at Big W before.

    • I would assume so, given that Woolworths sells them. They would probably be found in the games section of the store though, not the gift card rack.

  • any for target to use for mario kart wii u bundle ?

    • This is what I'm interested in. Buy $300 of coles myer gift cards for $270, buy the bundle + another game such as 3d mario world for $31 cheaper.

      • +1

If you buy a Westfield gift card yes. Works out to only be 7% though once you include a $2.95 service fee on the card. So buy $300 (three $100 cards) for $270. Pay $9 service fee equals $279. Then go buy the wii u with $300 of spending power for $279.

        • Why don just use the discounted westfield gift cards to buy wish gift card at woolies in westfield shopping centre then use the wish gift card to buy more westfield gift cards at bigw with the 10%off discount and keep repeating.

  • Hmm, it doesn't specifically say Westfield cards are excluded. Westfield gift cards can be used for the majority if not all stores in a Westfield managed shopping centre https://www.westfieldgiftcards.com.au/Online/Retail/About

So buy a Westfield gift card using this deal and get 10% off ALL stores.

You could the use a Westfield card to buy more cards at Big W?

    • Westfield cards have a 5.95 fee I think. And capped at $100 value each.

      • $2.95 fee according to https://www.westfieldgiftcards.com.au/Online/Corporate/Order. As the link is for online, I'd have to read the package for the actual cost.

Regardless of fee it's still extra percentage to buy a gift card that will allow purchase of more gift cards.

Picture shows $50 and $100 cards. So still 7% (TBC if fee is $3) off if you buy a $100 card for $90 + $3 service fee. Then buy gift cards from Westfield Big W, rinse and repeat to accumulate and compound the percentage saved.

        • Uh oh.. I can see the Westfield cards getting Ozbargained.

        • +1

The ones they sell at big W have a $5.95 fee so you'd only be saving 4.6%. Better off using ING or discounted cards.

  • +1

so potentially we can get Ipad mini wifi 16 GB for $244.50 ?

    1. buy $300 Jb Hifi for $270 ( 10% off gift card from bigw)

    2. go to Jb Hifi and ask to pricematch Ipad mini from Target which is selling at $305 at the moment.

    3. Assuming pricematch is successful, pay with giftcard + $ 5 dollars = $275.

    4. 10% off Tourist Refund Scheme = $30.5

    5. Final price = $275 - $30.5 = #244.5

    • Tourist Refund Scheme doesn't work like that. Dont get 10% back, you get 1/11 of the price back.

      • +2

stand corrected !! $2 ish difference. Still a very good price.

        $305 - ($305/11) = $305 - $27.7 = $277.3

    • GST on $305 is $27.72

    • deleted

    • If you are a RACV member or similar:

-1. Buy 3 x $100 Wish gift card for $285 (5% off Wish gift card from RACV shops being a member)

      1. Buy $300 JB Hifi using the Wish gift cards as funds for $270. $30 left over in wish card for your
other groceries in Woolies later. Effectively this is $255 out of pocket for your jb cards.

Do the same for your steps 2 to 5.

So outlay of $285 + $5 you'll get your ipad + $30 wish gift card left over + $27.72 TRS so effectively
$232.28 if you think this is how you want to tell your friends how much you pay effectively at the end.

      • Only problem with this is how will you receive the Wish gift cards in 1 day, unless you're near a RACV branch that sells them?

        • I always carry stock of the RACV Wish cards which I purchased instore.

      • +2

"Plus guys I got $27.72 back through TRS and I only had to spend $500 on a return international flight to get it."

    • JB Hi-Fi can't price match on iPads. Directive from head office.

    • TRS is work if you spend over $300.

  • I wonder why Big W would advertise competitors' gift cards.

    • because it is sales. they would get a cut of the sale price. better 5% (or what ever amount) than 0%

      • You could understand that if Big W advertised gift cards of other retailers in different sectors, but these retailers are its direct competition. Do you know if any of the other department stores do this? I don't shop much.

        • +1

it's also a psychological move on several levels

Big W sells their competitors stuff, but you're there in Big W, so there is a greater likelihood you will buy a Big W card.

or at least have a positive experience in Big W even though you bought a competitors card -"Big W, they aren't so bad". It's enforcing consumer loyalty.

and, You already went to BigW to buy a gift and Big W have provided the gift (even though it a competitor). "Big W have everything"

  • -6

"X% off storewide" deals never ever work on gift cards, unless the deal is specifically for gift cards. I don't know why they'd start now, seems like someone just messed up the T&C.

    • Not on their own gift cards but other stores.

    • +1

What would be your reason to neg if this deal is legit.

    • you would think so wouldn't you. But id guess that it may work in some stores, and not in others. we'll have to see

  • Any limit to gift cards in one transaction in store like JB Hifi, Myer?
please! Iam gonna pull the trigger!

    • gift cards are cash like. I don't think the stores can impose a limit on them .

      • Yeah I assume they wont say: you cannot pay with more than 5 $50 notes.

        • But what I heard is they limit to 5 giftcards only and required ID due to fraud recently?
Anyone used multiple gc plz confirm?

  • +2

I've tried to buy gift cards with gift cards…
I had some westfield cards (which I bought using be credit card points), which I wanted to convert to wish or woolworths cards… so I could see the balance when I bought groceries…

First time I did it no problems…

The second time I had.. I made the mistake of exceeding a fixed limit.. basically the registered deducted from the westfield card (which is basically a visa) then refund to load up the gift card… because of the amount (>$500 and then aborted.. because it was a outside giftcard… the transaction could not be reversed…

Luckily I figure out what happened.. and demanded the manager fix it… took about an hour of arguing and going through the receipts to work out what had happended….

The checkout lady.. got into major trouble for allowing gift cards to purchase another gift card… Apparently its against most stores policy.. because if something goes wrong.. its basically impossible to reverse

Just be very very careful with large amounts.. because there as limits… (I think the wish cards were $500)…

  • interesting how popular this one-day deal is compared to similar week-long ones at auspost and colesworth :)

  • I don't remember 10% off gift cards at coles or aus post… care to provide a link

  • Thanks OP! Was planning to pickup a new camera body at JB Hifi, 10% off will save me heaps!

Is there a max amount limit per gift card? Planning to get $2k worth.
