does anyone know if its possible to use a monitor like this as a tv? (i.e. a small tv for a bedroom)
It will work perfectly. You will just need to buy a STB and some speakers.
I have dome the exact same thing as smaller LCD TV's are crap with awful low resolutions.
Not to mention an LCD+STB+Speakers costs less than a small LCD TV
Then you'll need an extra TV tuner. Some of the latest model LCDs have the build-in TV tuner. But obviously they'll cost more. Or if you can wait till the price goes down.
So a set top box will be able to connect directly to the monitor? What sort of speakers would be needed?
Any speakers will be fine.
I purchased some Creative 2 channel speakers for about $80 which sound great.
If the STB you buy has a 3.5mm (headphone) out jack you will be set, it if doesn't you simply buy a RCA to Femals 3.5mm jack (Like so http://www.computercableinc.com/ccinc/images/CABLE-Audio-Y-S…)
Remember this does not have any component or HDMI, make sure The tv tuner(set top box) supports this interface!

HDMI is exactly the same as DVI (minus the audio)
A simple DVI to HDMI converter will solve the lack of HDMI on the monitor.
As the monitor is a 16:9 aspect ration (this is critical) the STB will output in an aspect ratio that the TV can understand and natively display.
Would all I need be something like this:
http://www.shoppingsquare.com.au/p_3022_PAVO_TV5821E_TV_TUNE…
That has VGA out so will easily plug into the monitor (I'd guess that is what it is designed to do)
For my set-up i purchased a Teac HD STB so the STB output of 1080 matched the native resolution of the monitor.
The Pavo doesn't state it is HD so will look crappy on the monitor.
You want to buy a STB which is HD compatible so its output matches that of the monitors native resolution otherwise the image will be stretched to fit and will look blocky.
Pavo is just an analog TV tuner, it will only let you watch analog tv channels. To watch One HD and other HD channel you must use High Definition Set top box.
How is this a good deal ??
Agreed.
Cheaper at GoComp, Umart, Netplus, Ausin, and MSY.
Not a bargain.
Im not sure , this that a great offer? Here it is for over $8 cheaper plus there appears to be some free bonus of some kind
