  • This one use the latest Micron 16nm NAND
Can consider their pro version of the line until it replaces the m500 lot currently at new low prices.

These use latest controllers and can consider as the first of the 2014 ssds

    • is it better than m500 (as in is it officially meant to supercede the m500) and samsung evo PRO version?
and i thought it still uses the 20nm MLC nand, or is that only for the 250gb?

    • +1

No, these use 20nm NAND. You're probably thinking of the MX100, which is expected to be released next month.

      • ops my bad :)
550 is old NAND with newer chipset

        not the newer fab.

  • Bought one with priority shipping, Amazon reckons it'll be here by Friday.

    • +2

They are usually correct with their delivery estimates.

With their fasting shipping method, I can get gear from Amazon (UK/IT/US) here quicker, than I can from the eastern states.

      • +1

Likewise it takes 5 days for me to get some thing from Perth to Queensland. In the mean time if i get some thing shipped via an express courier from California in the US it can arrive in 4 days.

      • Yeah they're good. I ordered a camera lens 7 days out from Xmas and it arrived one or two days before Christmas Day one year. It does highlight the inefficiencies of our local mail system.

        • What lens?

  • Wish I could trade my 480GB M500 for this.

    • +4

How come? The 480GB M500 is a solid drive. You won't notice much difference loading applications.

      • +1

I would go so far as to say that you wouldn't notice ANY difference loading applications, purely because loading applications has much more to do with random access rather than sequential transfer speeds.

However, the extra 32GB is handy, it's an extra 8% or so of space.

  • Samsung Evo or Crucial M550?

    • Do you have a UPS, or is it for a laptop with a battery? If not, then go for the Crucial as supposed to be better during a power cut.

    • +1

Crucial if you're going to be writing a lot to the SSD (MLC > TLC)

    • roughly the same level, as they are using 500 mb level control chips
the differences would be say 5-7% between them in various tests, one be better than the other in one test..
Real world usage wouldn't be much difference thanks to Sata interface and chipsets.
we ran in to a bottle neck for SATA interface.

Also, MLC is better than TLC but unless you are going to use it as a dynamic backup drive that wipes large chucks of data (10GBplus) every day.

      • What about which is more better value for money?

        • +1

I bought 2 x 240GB Crucial M500 for about $122 each delivered. This way 2 desktops can have increased performance rather than getting one 480GB SSD. Also, 240GB is more than enough for windows and programs, all other files are stored on a conventional 2TB HDD. this gives me great value for money.

        • +2

Makes perfect sense too, $122 x 2 = $244 which is still less than the 480GB and if you ever want to use them in the same computer, chuck them in RAID0 and they should perform as well as (if not slightly better than) the 480GB.

  • bang for buck which is better in a lenovo laptop (sata 3)?

the m550 at 285$, the samsung evo 840 at 240$ or the crucial m500 at 220$?
