  • Comparison to MSY

    C2Q 9400 - $295
    4Gb 800 RAM - $60
    1Tb HDD - $121
DVD RW - $49 (big jump in price at MSY!)
    9800GT - $126
    Case, PSU & Mobo - ~$100
    Generic KB & M - ~$25
    24" Monitor - $342
    OEM Win XP - $179

    Build Fee - $70

    Total: $1367

I guess the delivery and warranty could be worth the additional $200 (or only $120 if you use Moneyback Co.)

    • Case, PSU & Mobo - ~$100

While I'm not a massive fan of Dell, the case & PSU quality is at bare minimum the Asus range level (start at $85) and realistically more the Antec level (start at $134). And the mainboard would be the equivalent of a $110-$150 board.

Plus it has the Vista/XP double option.

This is a good price for a pre-build with the no-fuss Dell warranty, I can't find anything from other major brands of comparable quality and components at a similar price.

      • Fair call, haven't used Dell extensively myself so it was just a guesstimate (which was prolly a tad low anyway).

Now we need to see if this is legit or another pricing error!

      • Don't forget - this machine is also eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 7 Professional Edition in October.

  • 2 yr warranty is around $40 extra.

also you get Vista Business with downgrade right + better than generic keyboard + mouse + ok case & power supply.

(no point running XP on a Q9400, I kinda like vista)

Not saying DELL use the best MB, but would be better than the cheapest MB from MSY.

and don't have to line up and get told it's out of stock.

you can also use your amex to pay without extra charges.

and DELL's next day warranty is great…

$900 cash off? Seems extremely misleading considering those machine specs are no where close to being worth $2500. A better machine can be built for less than the sticker price of $1600

not trying to defend my deal.

but it's not misleading… it's $900 cash off from dell.

and as explained before, this is pre build machines, which you get next business day on site warranty.

It's not a machine that has a lot of personality but, it'd be a reliable machine.

say if your relo wanted a Q9400 machine, if you build it for them, then if anything goes wrong within the 1st year, you'll have to fix it for them (which involve sending the stuff back to the supplier or yourself physically go do it.) If you really want to calculate the cost, then work out the shipping / petrol / time you spend.

      never mid ;-) peace~

The point is this machine is and never WAS worth anywhere close to $2500. You could easily send someone off to a local computer shop who will assemble and offer warranty support on the same hardware for below or around the same as the $1600 cost. I guess what I really object to is Dell's overstated discount of $900, which is in reality a misleading marketing ploy.

Bad argument. He is comparing the regular RRP of the item to the current sell price. You can't go comparing every single deal out there to "how much can I build this myself for?". It can be used as a yardstick perhaps, but the way he has posted the deal and pricing is fine.

          • @AntMan76: So if a shop says a product is $10,000 RRP when in fact it is only worth $5,000 and then claim they are offering $5,000 off RRP is that not dishonest and deceptive? This is exactly what Dell has done

            • @Cobalt_: what dell is doing is not exactly like what you described. But If you think this way……

the point of this post was not to say that they took $900 off, but to simply let ppl know that DELL is offering a system for around $1600.

              • @villemus: Inflating RRP prices and then claiming a ridiculous discount is exactly what they are doing

  • not big fan of dell but voted positive as the deal is not so bad esp. for the ones who want something like that.

  • Wait wait - is this a DELL mistake again, is it?

  • nope … this is not a mistake,

This has been advertised on their main page.

    • So? Mistakes have been bulk emailed to people before.

I don't get excited about Dell "discounts" anymore.

  • For a major manufacturer it does represent some value for money. Obviously there are advantages and disadvantages through custom building but I still see the value (from a major manufacturer) and the support being strong factors in my decision for a pos vote :)

  • You can also swap the 2x2G for a 1x4G for no additional cost. I'm not sure what the dual channeling rules are these days but that sounds like a reasonable +.

I had no idea a 2408WFP was so expensive. $790 to replace the entry level one offered. How does my 2407WFP compare to the 2408?
