480GB SanDisk Extreme II SSD for $279 from MSY

830

Found this one in my email today.

Have been using Ozbargain for so long, and save (cost) me a lot of money.

this is my first post.

Best price locally and close the best price compare to Amazon.

But for the convenience of multiple physical stores and local warranty I would prefer MSY.

Have seen some good review about Sandisk SSD especially the Extreme version. Here is one from AnandTech:

This is not a bad deal if you happened to need a larger SSD and have a MSY store closer to you.

Remember to pre-order first before you go to avoid "no stock" situation.

Although we all know that might not work anyway. (For SSD their stock level is generally ok I found)

Deal starts Mon. and Finish Tue.

By the way the Viewsonic 23" IPS for 139 is not bad either a cheap solution to a dual-monitor set-up with good view-angle, (no HDMI).

Cheers

you can get it from Amazon for a little cheaper.

That deal no longer stands and it was still more expensive after shipping and conversion. Amazon's current price is $290 USD.

This is the best price for a 480GB Extreme II for Australians, ever. Assuming you're picking it up from your local MSY, and who the hell doesn't want to waste a Saturday or Sunday queuing for 2 hours to get to front of the line? Come on now.

A fast SSD, trades blows with the Evo 840 (they're pretty much neck & neck), but no power-loss protection or RAIN like the Crucial M500/M550. Some folks only trust Intel, Samsung and Micron Technology (Crucial's owner) since they're the biggest semiconductor manufacturers but SanDisk's track record is pretty solid.

The next generation of SSDs on sub-20nm lithography launching this year will leave all before them in the dust however (especially the so-called SAS SSDs); so really there will be two schools of SSD technology by 2014 Q3, pre-2014 and post-2014. And the Extreme II and Evo 840 are the kings of the pre-2014 school.

    • Yeah not seeing many great deals on the Crucials / 840 so this is decent for now.

The Crucial M500 in every capacity has always been cheaper than the SanDisk or Samsung equivalent and it still is in this case. Because it's well, slower and uses MLC nand which cheaper than Samsung's TLC.

There's very little chance of that ever being reversed, especially with the M550s out now, and vendors clearing out old stock fast.

Like I've always said, in the 256GB or smaller capacities, go with Samsung & SanDisk (M500 240/120s are at rock-bottom in the benchmarks), in the 480GB or larger capacities, go with Crucial.

Though in this case, you really could go either way. This price point is quite possibly as cheap as the Extreme II/Evo 840 480GB will ever get; maybe 10 or 20 dollars less in a few months, though stock will be hard to find by then (as their replacements are just around the corner).

        • The price of ssd is going to fall further by end of this year, I estimate once new gen ssd show up, the 480 - 512 size type will went to 24x to 25x aud level ( given us au exchange rate holds and world economic depression hasn't set in).

This year is the year ssd came mainstream.

Apart from sas ssd type, they are going to release PCI-e slot type ssd that go beyond 600m / s as early as late 2014. We will see these high performance drives overtake sata type for top range prices in 2015.

Gigantic size ssd also said to be on the way with 2-4 tb models in planning by various makers.

They will only get cheaper but, prices aside, the performance of anything that can do read write above 300m/s on a PC can be felt immediately on win 7 / 8 machines.

Amar89… MLC are generally more expensive than TLC. MLC have longer lifespan. Generally, MLC are 2 bits per cell whereas TLC is 3 bits per cell. M500 are cheaper than most other MLC drives because M500 is slower and M550 is now released. Samsung 840 Pro use MLC (for better reliability / longer lifespan). TLC is a cost reduction exercise (3 bits per cell means less cells needed to achieve the same size). You get less warranty for TLC drives (compare the warranty you get for Samsung 840 Pro vs Samsung EVO)

Sequential read speed and sequential write speed benchmark figures do not mean much in real life.

Sub-20nm lithography is mainly to reduce cost (allow more cells per wafer). The first 19nm SSD does not have amazing performance figures (basically still on par with current gen). There isn't a single SSD that wins every benchmark. Extreme II is good at really heavy multi-tasking (which most users don't have that type of usage pattern). While I do have a Samsung TLC SSD, I got it for the price, not the performance nor the lifespan. In fact, I still use a MLC SSD for my main PC.

Wouldn't old gen just be discontinued instead of made cheaper?

There was a test that throw the first gen 840 (not EVO) in to a 300TB write test and it managed to hold even after 300 TB, it only start to fail by a few sectors at 500TB level

          http://techreport.com/review/26058/the-ssd-endurance-experim…

It is not possible for 99% of users to max out at even 100 TB write in the life time before replacing the entire PC (i only managed 4 TB for my first 840 in 12 months!!!)

Been 2-3 years since I've queued at MSY, for more than 5 min. 9/10 times I walk straight up & get served. In & out in <5min.

Back in the day… JAYSUS!! 45 min queing, only to get "No Have!" "Nexxxt!" Soup nazi service.

      • this is what we are seeing right now, old gen stock clearing out for ways of the new gen which starting to show in small numbers.

I don't think they open sundays. Saturday is only 10am-2pm.

  • Thanx op :-)

I have a 240gb version and had no problems at all. Would def recommend.

"Remember to pre-order first before you go to avoid "no stock" situation."

Good luck getting their email confirmation. lol

  • SanDisk Extreme II SSD faster then Samsung 840 Pro?

    • +1

In "stated" speeds the Sandisk is actually a smidgin faster. I suspect actual speeds would be pretty close.

I've been booting off a Sandisk Extreme II for about a year now and it's been fantastic. Would recommend.

Is this reliable enough to be used for storing backups?

    • +10

Its an SSD. Its fast. Use it to store data you use a lot. Not data you are backing up and rarely need. Its a waste of money otherwise.

    • +2

The only benefit of having an SSD for backups would be the read and write speed, but you'd need to be doing a lot of very large backups very often to see this benefit. You'd also be trashing the drive petty quick with all those extensive writes, so you'd lose value there. Get yourself a 4tb server grade drive if you want a premium backup drive, it'd probably be cheaper anyway.

      • +2

In fact even average consumer HDD can now push over 100MB/s sequential transfer which should be more than enough for continuous backups.

  • Getting warmer, looks like it will drop further :)

    Cheers.

  • AMD A4-4000 will be on sale soon

  • Buy now or wait 3 months?

    • +2

At this price (and I don't think MSY have that many in stock), they will be sold out quite quickly.

  • It seems the 240GB is slightly faster than the 480GB..

  • +1

I got one today, its a massive improvement over my old 120GB OCZ vertex 3, called up MSY and they still had plenty in stock here in SA. Its a good price for a 480Gb, i can see I wont need to upgrade it for a few years.
