A word of caution - these all seem to come from the same OEM (I forget the name) and I have experienced problems with a number of them. Particularly in relation to faulty/unreliable memory (possibly due to fake capacity claims) and rapidly diminishing battery life.

Other than that, they are reasonably functional, basic units. Just don't expect a long term investment.

  • cheers HueyData- given your experiences I think I'll pass on this one.

Should go without saying but unreliable, poor battery life etc. I'm a cheapass and whether it's because I travel a lot, a decent audio played and headphones are worth paying for (note: not saying go nuts and get an ipod)

  • Yep I'm with Huey. Much better idea to wait until Apple gets a few iPods in its refurb bin and pick up a cheap Nano there. One often unforeseen drawback of these crappy units is the interface - yes it can hold a thousand songs, but to play song number 500, you have to push the 'Fast Forward' button 500 times. Apple does it miles better for not much more dollars.

    • How is that any different to an ipod shuffle? I know the idea of the shuffle is that you don't care about the order of songs, but to anyone else it's a pain.

      • I guess the point here is that the screen gives you the impression it can do that, when it cant. With the Shuffle you know you cant. The shuffle does give you the ability to set up playlists and you have voice over to know what song is playing etc.

Does anyone else use their phone as their MP3 player? I think I've got about 100 CDs on their, with the ability to pick album, artist, playlist etc :)

Note: I am near powerpoints most of the day, so I can also charge up my phone when it starts to go flat … :)

      • My crappy phone has enough memory for one mp3. And even that one has to be less than 4mb big. I can fit the Seinfeld theme on there and not much else.

  • There are better bang for buck than apple stuff - Sandisk's Sansa clip players are IMHO the best on the market, and creative have solid offerings. My Sandisk Sansa Clip is the best player i've ever had, and I've owned a few ipods and creative players too.

    • My experience is actually another way around. I got an ipod shuffle & a sandisk sansa. The ipod quality is super, whereas the sandisk i need to reset it nearly everyweek. And everytime I reset, I lost all the songs. I think it is true that you get what you pay for (I mean the sandisk is cheaper anyway).

Aldi have a 60 day no questions ask refund policy. $20 for 4GB is cheap as especially if you can use it as a USB drive too!

    • Don't be surprised if the "USB 2.0 interface" feels a lot like USB 1.0 :)

      • I'm with HueyData - I bought one from ebay similar to this and it was so pathetic that I dumped it in the bin out of frustration.

For value I'm giving it a positive. I also believe ALDI has some kind of satisfaction policy as well which would be somewhat reassuring if there was an issue. It's good other users have posted their experience even though it may be negative as it's informative.

This is how OzBargain should work. :)

    • I agree and don't jude a book by is cover unless you have this Aldi model

Just remember cheap doesn't necessarily mean value :)

With respect to refunds/satisfaction, see the ACCC information excerpted in my comment here. (Forum topic here.)

Regardless of what the seller offers, you are entitled to remedies "for the amount of time that is reasonable to expect, given the cost and quality of the item" (insert jokes about $20 OEM device here) and "may be entitled to a remedy under their statutory rights after any manufacturer’s voluntary or extended warranty has expired."

      • Firstly I read some of that and found it informative so thanks for that. I had an issue a while ago, if only you were there :D

  • looks similar to this one which I purchased for $2 when my local shopping center had a promotion on.

Didn't really like the user interface, difficult to navigate. Wouldn't buy another one for $2.

  • I got the player from Aldi today. When I plug it into my computer, Symantec detected a Trojan Horse in start.exe.

Has anyone else's anti-virus scanner detected anything or is it a fails alarm?

    • Have heard of this though don't know specifically about the virus.

      Can Symantec neutralise the threat?

    • Hi, I got the $20 mp3 player from Aldi and the same thing happened to me. I'm getting my money back.

  • remote - if you download the pdf instructions (limited as they are!!) from http://www.tempoaustralia.com.au/mp3/im/ - the first thing mentioned is a false alarm about trojans triggered by antivirus software.

I bought one today and my problem is: plugged it in for the best part of 5 or 6 hours, but it still doesn't power up even for a brief time. Beginning to think I must've bought a faulty one… I'm assuming it recharges via USB, there is no other apparent way - anyone?

In the pdf instructions "troubleshooting" section it says if there is no power, check the battery is installed properly… what battery? where? There's no diagram or anything. Kinda weird. All I can find is a small white plastic button beneath the belt clip on the back… I can press it in with a pen, but nothing else seems to happen.

Would be glad to hear any advice from others! I'm heading back to Aldi tomorrow if it continues not to charge.

    Cheers.

    • […] the first thing mentioned is a false alarm about trojans triggered by antivirus software.

I'd like to know why it needs to autorun anything in the first place.

I’m assuming it recharges via USB, there is no other apparent way - anyone?

Just USB. I don't have this particular model but it's safe to say the battery is not user-serviceable or replaceable; the whole product is designed to be disposed and replaced.

Had problems with battery life but never with charging itself, so I would suggest taking it back. And getting your money back if you can :)

  • To mattvox, did you put the small switch to "On" it will not charge otherwise.

I took mine back and got a refund because of the viruses which were detected (Two of them, one trojan and one infostealer).

I prefer to accept what my virus program says not what the chinese makers say.

    • To mattvox, did you put the small switch to “On” it will not charge otherwise.

I can't speak for this particular model but the similar ones I've had do not require to be switched on in order to recharge. Indeed, that would be a very unusual and seemingly pointless requirement.

  • To HueyData, the only method of charging is via USB which can be your computer or a charger which has a USB outlet like an Ipod charger.

    • Don't think you were replying to me :)
