      It's almost like it's 30% off….

      • It's crazy!
        JB have gone mad!

  • doesn't appear to include items like this, which also have DVD players in them.

which from what I see should be classified as CAR SOUND

  • I won't get hyped up over these car sound sales, all premium gear are excluded - jl audio, focal etc.

    • cos the above $500 system can't possibly be premium, why even bother with it? :)

  • Hi,

Does anyone know a good head deck (relatively cheap) from the ones at JB Hi Fi? All I'm really looking for is something that can play music off my android phone.

    • If you want the ultimate cheap cheap, look at what ur current stereo can do. Does it have cassette deck? What connections are in the back? On some cars, there are connections in the back that you can turn into an Aux in. Worked a treat for my Honda Jazz.

'Good' is very subjective in the world of audio however if you're just after something cheap & cheerful then just go for the $40 Sony. Plug your phone into the USB port and it should treat it like a USB Memory device and will play whatever music you have stored on your handset. It will be klunky as you'll have to navigate through the folders & tracks on the head unit itself but it should work OK. Alternatively just plug it into the AUX port via a standard stereo lead and navigate/control the music from your handset. It's a cheap head unit and it wont last forever BUT it should meet most peoples expectations.

Next up would be the Kenwood for $68.60 with its 'Kenwood Music Control for Android' feature. I have no idea what that does or how well it works but I assume it's better than basic navigation as per the Sony above. This unit also has the AUX in so if the Kenwood control feature turns out to be crap then you can just use it via the AUX as per the Sony unit above.

Next up from that would be the Pioneer Mech-Free with Bluetooth for $109.90 as you can then use the phone to navigate/control the music and just stream it to the head unit via BT however I know you can get Bluetooth head units cheaper than this if you look elsewhere. In saying that this Pioneer is probably quite a decent unit though and should keep you going for many years.

    • I'm really tempted to get the Sony one, but then:

      • Someone said on the review that its not Ipod / iphone friendly. So if I plug ipod / iphone in there, I won't be able to flick through songs with the buttons on the head unit ? This is really handy while driving.
      • No clock - the biggest let down of budget head units these days.. is it really that hard to put on a clock ? maybe costs a couple cents extra for Sony?

I also have a feeling that end of June and beginning of July, end of financial year, JB Hifi will be doing lots more deals / clearance / stock takes. Anyone?

      • what they should have said was the iPod is not open standard USB friendly, as Apple don't allow 3rd party devices to access iPod memory in the same fashion as mass storage, then force people to pay a fee for the use of their proprietary connector. Forget about buying a device for $40 if you are using an iPod and expect anything more than aux input and play everything from the iPod interface

        • Its true. So will the USB function work with an android phone tho?

  • how do I know whether this fits into my car or not? Should I bring to mechanics to fit it?

    • These head unit fit most cars nowadays. Fittings will cost you about $60-80

  • Yes esp that my front left speaker is not working- probably it's caused by loose cables. But then I can't track down whether it's the speaker itself, my stereo or just the cables.

I do want to get a new car stereo at the same time. Can fellow ozbargainers shed me some light?

    • If you want to test the speakers, switch place of front left and right. If left also doesnt work after the switch, its cable.

Or you can use multimeter and test for continuity of the cables.

If both speakers and cables are fine, gotta be the stereo

  • They just had a 40% off car audio sale 2 weeks ago (just installed mine which I picked up a fortnight back). Only just happened across the sale on the last day, and picked up a head unit for a good price. Appeared to be a real sale as it jumped back up to a few $ under rrp the next day.
SA @ nunawading branch was helpful, forest hill were useless.

  • I bought that Sony DAB+ head unit in December and love it. The digital stations mean no ads and no radio DJs being unfunny in the morning.
