Glenlivet 12 years 44.80 that's just $7 dollars more for a single malt that tastes 100% times better.

So they taste the same? ;)

      • yeah if you drown it on coke

        • +2

Drowning single malt in coke should be a capital crime

          It's called Sarcasm ?

$7 dollars more for a single malt

This is a different style though, it is a blended scotch. If you want to compare single malts, then compare it to the Johnnie Walker Green

      • I use to drink loads of Black label and that all changed once I discovered single malt whiskey. I guess its personal preference.

Green is way more than 45 dollars isn't it ?

Green is dead now. They killed it off. Was a nice enough drop tho.

    • Glenlivet 12 years 44.80 that's just $7 dollars more for a single malt that tastes 100% times DIFFERENT.

      Fixed that for you.

Blended whisky and single-malt whisky are just different. Not definitively better or worse.

A single has a unique flavour profile. It doesn't have the flavours that aren't in it.

A blend can have any flavour the blender wants to put in, in whatever proportion he wants to mix. They can be very complex, and very well balanced. Alternatively, they could just be the cheapest crap he can find to pour in.

Some singles are good, some are awful. Some blends are good, some are awful.

JW Black is my benchmark blend. It has the smoke and peat of Tallisker (which is a significant proportion of the blend), with a few interesting spices and florals that straight Tallisker doesn't have. Some blends are better balanced, but I kind of like the cheeky rough edges of Black.

Don't get me wrong, I looooove Tallisker as a single malt (and don't care much for lighter singles like Glenmorangie, for what it's worth), and wouldn't drink a rubbish blend like Black Douglas, Teachers or JW Red. There are good and bad singles (for any taste), there are good and bad blends.

I just really get sick of the inane attitudes on here that say "It's not a single malt, it must be inferior".
