    That's pretty major!

    • haha rules out checking temperature on babies then!

    • I doubt they're even accurate to +/-10C

They're intended for measuring temperature extremes or extreme fluctuations. E.g. Engine components, cooking surfaces, PC internals, etc.

  • Not bad considering the supercheap auto deal a while back was considered a good deal and that was $20 this one is half the price.

  • Strange I got one of these years ago and it was to be used with a 9V battery, these must be newer model with the AAAs..

  • Edit: Actually, checking the Mastercard conversion rates, you will probably do better buying in USD ;-)
Selecting in Australian dollars gives AU$10.50

  • Better price than I paid for it.

  • Good price! I would buy one if I knew what to do with it. Checking my soup, tea or bath water temperature? Health check on the neighbour's cat sitting on the fence ? :)))

  • what can i do with this

These are not very accurate. I've had one for a couple of years and it's only good to tell if something is hot, cold or freezing from a distance without touching it yourself, but for many applications won't give a usable reading. It would be good for testing if your car engine is cold enough to start working on without burning yourself, or checking if a saucepan has cooled down before picking it up, but no good for checking the bathwater, as a 5-10% difference in temperature for something you'll be immersed in can be the difference between far too hot and just right.

I tried using it to test the temerature of a freezer but every part of the freezer gave a different reading, about or 8 degrees C difference between all the readings. None of the readings were reliable enough to let me know if the freezer was keeing food at a safe temperature, and measuring the same place two or three times gave two or three slightly different readings.

It's been handy, but don't expect precision.

That would be my concern with this model. Temperature range is not high enough for hotter things. I think I spent $30 or so at dx for one with more range. Different surfaces need different settings on the thermometer to get accurate readings. That is the most important thing to keep in mind. You basically need a chart to look up what settings to put in for different surfaces (they call it emissivity). The listing here says: Emissivity: 0.95 fixed. Does that mean it can't be changed?

I like that this unit takes AAA batteries instead of 9V (9V are possible to buy in rechargeable form cheaply from China, but they are less common and you probably need to get yourself a dedicated charger or a hobby charger to charge 9V batteries). 9V disposables tend to be as expensive ($2+) as a rechargeable 9V is from China, and wasteful, so I don't like to rely on them.

Anyway, these things are useful and fun. Though I have no experience with this particular model. I would be concerned about the temperature range and the fixed emissivity though. Without being able to change emissivity settings, it's a mere toy.

  • I bought the same one off ebay for more than double the price. The other students in my cooking class have used these and I compared with my digital thermometer,. Only .1 degrees Celsius difference. I will buy another one at this price. The digtal thermometers take more than a minute some times to come up with a reading and they have to be inserted into the chocolate and a gigantic mess ensues.

    • Thanks. This will be great useful in your cooking class.:)

  • My thermometer arrived yesterday with a cracked LCD screen. Makes it unusable.
I have emailed Newfrog asking for a replacement. They want me to pay money.
No protective packaging at all used. Not happy.
