Ultimate Ears 4000vi Headphones - $44

31

"The Ultimate Ears 4000 Headphones are the first headphones worthy of the UE name. These powerful headphones deliver pure, undiluted audio thats rich, clear, and perfectly tunedfor music thats alive with depth, authenticity and emotion."

Whilst most of the above is an outright lie, $44 for a paid of UE headphones isn't too bad. Delivery for $5 to capital cities is available too.

It's nice to see that they haven't restricted the discount to just their purple ones too.

  • Nice one.
Is the UE6000 worth $99 from Dicksmith online? (double the price of UE4000).

    • Not sure sorry. I don't have either, was just looking at getting an interim pair while I get a new cord for my current headphones. The UE 6000 are $94 through TGG too.

    • The 6000s are rated as among the best closed headphones available at any price, tho the noise cancellation circuit is not great. The sound freaking amazing - toe curlingly good.

I have had these for a few months - they're pretty awful. They sound so flat. The vocals in music are to the background. I guess if you just like bass they would be okay. Or maybe just for watching TV. But for music listening I've found them awful.

    • There's not much else that I would trust in the ~$50 price range for headphones. They seem to review somewhat decently on head-fi.org against alternatives like skull candy. You could spend double the amount on the 6000's, or swap over to a different brand around the $100 mark, but of course thats spending more than you might have aside.

        Superlux.

Good call. Superlux HD-681 EVO Black Professional Monitor Headphones, if you don't mind the bigger and heavier less portable design, semi open sound, then these are hard to beat for great balanced monitoring sound for around AU $69 delivered. These are the better looking ( in most peoples opinion ), better sounding Superlux HD681 which are Classics with a bit of a cult following. Look them up.

        • Superlux HD-681 EVO Black Professional Monitor Headphones,

well now that sounds much more my style. thanks for the recommendation, now where is the cheapest place to pick them up? :D

        • Cheers, I'll check those out.

        • Yeah I have the old HD681 and are my favorite sounding headphones (with a minor mod or two), even better than my Audiotechnicas.

        • I have the 668Bs (which are generally considered superior to the 681) with the AKG K240 velour pads and find the UE6000s VASTLY superior in just about every way, especially comfort lol.
The 668/681 also provide no isolation from outside noise and are large and do not pack in any way so re also utterly unsuited to the portable use the UE range are designed for.

I thought we were talking about $50 phones?

      • Pretty much the cheapest usable closed cans I know are the Sennheiser HD201 (or 202 i you love bass) which can both be commonly had under $30 and provide great performance for the money. The 201 is common in studios as they are cheap enough to risk musos damaging and accurate enough for them to use to perform.
If you are looking for the ultimate cheap hero for portable use the JVC flats are amazing http://www.head-fi.org/products/jvc-has160b-flats-lightweigh… I keep them in my uni bag and never notice they are even there, til i need to plug into a uni PC or suddenly feel the need for some music. Awesome range of colours too.

I guess if you just like bass they would be okay.

heh maybe they are trying to tap into the beats by dre market pool?

      • -1

Beats by Dre have weak bass. Probably not going for the beats by dre market pool at this price point.

        • Beats by Dre have weak bass.

its never entered my mind to actually try them myself (urgh horrid thought) but just going by online reviews of people who have…

They look great but, as with most Beats-range headphones, they’re for bass hunters only.

maybe trusted reviews are not to be trusted…. who can tell..

edit: altho as is often the case… maybe i was onto something

The most consistent criticism levied on the Beats headphone line is that they are “bass heavy.” In our own review of the Beats Solo we blamed heavy bass for obscuring the midrange, and in our Beats Pro review we called the bass output “distracting.” But it would seem that the re-voicing of the Beats Studio involved pulling back the bass a bit – quite a bit actually – because these headphones sound nothing like the Solo, the Pro or the prior version of the Studio.

If you are going from a pair of apple earphones, then yes, they probably will seem like they have great bass.

If you want to hear decent bass in a pair of headphones, pop into a store like headphonic (Perth store, not sure what the Adelaide equivalent is) and try Beyer Dynamic Custom One Pros.

        • us$200 plus shipping from amazon? yea ill pass. im certainly no headfone elitist. ive picked up some great fones through deals on here, tho still lacking a bit in sound but for sub$50 i still class them as "good". i really dont use them often enough to even consider anything about this point but always happy to consider adding to the umm, 5 pairs i think it is i already own.

guess im just hoping for another similar percentage off normal price as i got here IE $500 fones for $50. i live to dream….

The bass from UE headphones and the bass in Beats headphones are completely different. UE's have very tight, punchy, controlled bass (that I still think is too powerful at times), whereas Beats headphones basically just wash out the entire song with bass. It doesn't sound natural and it's annoying because the lows are so much more prominent than the mids and the highs.
