  • Is this a Chinese brand chainsaw? If so then I'll give you some advice for adjusting the chain; remove chain, throw over left shoulder install a Carlton (or similar) chain.

The cheap Chinese chains crack, splinter and stretch. You will find yourself cutting in circles and with the occasional sparks as the chain hits a fleck of chain that has embedded itself in the wood. This is based on experience with a 24" $135 model.

Good for upcoming halloween, thanks op

    • Hmm, a chainsaw on ozbargain? Because I go chainsaw shopping so often.

      • come the zombie apocalypse and let's see who's laughing.

  • The RRP on these deals always makes me raise an eyebrow or two. If they tried to sell them at $199 no-one would buy them. Still a 2nd standby chainsaw for $95 delivered to my door… yeah I'll buy one :-)

Good reliable well established brand of 50-60cc chainsaw with 20in bar hoovers around $1,000. A chainsaw happens to be one of the most dangerous pieces of machinery one can buy and operate without a licence.

After operating chainsaws for many years I still have all limbs, and I like to keep it like that. I would buy a cheap PVR, cheap TV set, cheap mobile phone, cheap set of steak knifes, and so on, but never a cheap piece of equipment which can badly injure me or someone nearby. Just my opinion - as a disclosure I never used Yukon brand, and is is possible that by some miracle of economics this $95 chainsaw is indeed "Pro", and is as SAFE TO USE as a $900 Husqvarna or Stihl. Indeed, as it is just after Easter maybe we should believe in miracles. Go and buy it D:<

    • +1

Forgive my ignorance but how are Stihl and husqvarna safer to use? As far as I can tell all chainsaws are exactly that; chainsaws. They are not idiot proof and the sharp end is always dangerous regardless of brand.

      • "Safety" is direct result of "predictability". Most accidents happen when an operator is distracted: less predictable tool = higher chances of getting distracted —> higher chances of accident.

        • Interesting, because by the same logic; less predictable tool = user focuses on the task at hand, predictable tool = user gets lax.

        • Thus: driving a car which is predictable, with precise steering, no drive train vibrations, engine runs smoothly = less safe?

Contrariwise… 'if it was so, it might be; and if it were so, it would be; but as it isn't, it ain't. That's logic.

What a silly comment. Both are equally dangerous when used for chopping human limbs.

The $900 gets you a far better build quality, a chain that doesn't stretch to buggery and might actually hold a sharp edge, a better chip extraction, significantly more power, a longer life, the ability to purchase spare parts, better vibration dampening, etc, etc…

… but as for safety? That's like comparing the safety of 2 different hand guns.

      • +1

Any mechanical device made with less precision, using cheaper materials is more likely to behave in less predictable way. A 50-60cc chainsaw typically has a highly stressed two stroke engine running at around 10,000rpm. This is very demanding for the engine and all drive components.

Not at all. The significant difference that you're overlooking is that chainsaws are not meant for use on limbs. And what he is saying about predictability (or possible lack thereof) is completely valid. A bar or chain that breaks while it is running, or a machine that kicks back repeatedly are very real possibilities.

If you don't have a lot of use for a chainsaw, and want to take the risk, go for it, but don't expect miracles from a 20" chainsaw for $95.
