Get $40 off a TrueCall Blocker (normal price $199.95).

From the TrueCall website:

Stop Nuisance Calls with the TrueCall Blocker.

TrueCall plugs into your telephone line at home and checks every call your receive before letting your phone ring.

It remembers who you like to talk to and who you don’t.

Friends are put straight through. Unknown callers are asked to identify themselves before TrueCall rings your phone and announces them. You then have complete control to accept, reject or send the call to voicemail. You can block all international callers or withheld numbers - the choice is yours.

I've had problems with nuisance callers. I repeatedly complained to Telstra but they couldn't do anything but pointed me to TrueCall. I've had it in a couple of weeks now and it's been great. No unwanted calls, but people I want to talk to get through straight away.

Have you ever heard of DNCR?

    • I used that for years, most unwanted calls were blocked.

Unless you can show the same unit cheaper elsewhere or show valid problems with this unit or seller then remove your neg and learn to read the rules

        • +7

You are not a moderator, read the rules and use the report button.

        • almost as if to prove just how well the report button works…

        • I did read the rules - and i did report - hence the number of posts missing as inappropriate negatives. Maybe you should take your own advice?

The DNCR doesn't work against international callers who are the main problem and won't protect you from somebody you know, a call screening device can. If you are being harassed something like this can save you from having to change your number til the police can stop them (which generally takes a while).
I have known a LOT of people who could use a unit like this.
There has been no cheaper legal alternative shown in this thread.

Local certification costs a bloody fortune for telco devices, that's why stuff with a tiny market like this ends up so expensive.

          and Indian Windows Security scammers

        • And telemarketers. I get 0 marketing calls

        • The guy that ran that scam was recently arrested.

      • only domestic numbers

    • This stopped working for me. I get weekly calls now…

      • re-register.

        • +8

I'm registered, but overseas callers aren't bound by Australian law. They don't care.

    • +4

Great idea, except the Do Not Call Register doesn't work. It blocks some calls but certainly does not block true 'nuisace' calls. I get woken up three or four times a day when trying to sleep in on my days off by charities, overseas telemarketers, scammers telling me my PC has a virus etc etc.

      • Turn OFF your Phone…

        • Or if you can't, set it to do not disturb for unknown callers/non whitelist

    • +5

The Do Not Call Register has been a failure for me. Most nuisance calls have stopped but some that claim to be doing surveys but are really trying to flog some financial product have been reported (by me) investigated and found not to be telemarketing.

I still get called 3 times a week, now I'm getting the Microsoft support calls - I'm ready to disconnect my phone line!

    • +1

DNCR is rubbish and doesn't work. Still get nuisance calls from overseas regularly, as well as a few locals like NSW Ministry of Health surveys.

  • +1

Can you put the price in the title

  • +8

Is there one for sockpuppets on OZB?

  • +3

Don't know if this works but we are on the DNCR and have had multiple calls from Australia and overseas from the supposed"tax office" wanting our bank details for a refund, as well as the ever elusive indian call centre Microsoft who once called me 3 times in the 1 week.

    • +7

DNCR only blocks legitimate telemarketing callers. Won't block scammers as what they're doing is already illegal anyway.

      • +3

Hahaha… legitimate telemarketers. There are two words that should never go together!

        • +1

Is there a way to ban international or calls made from ip phones?

        • +3

There should be, but there isn't.

The relevant minister is Senator Turnbull, if you'd like to get that changed:

        • +2

Turnbull is a dingbat! I 'should' be able to log into some account management online thing and block any number I want - oh well maybe next century.

        • +1

          Resolved ;)

        • Much as I hate the libs Turbull is probably the only one among them with brains and ethics - likely why he has been lumped with being the face of destroying aussie broadband by abbott to destroy him as a threat.

Beyond that, I dont see what it has to do with the regulatory environment anyway, It is within our technical capabilities to do this at the exchange level but the telcos just cant be arsed implementing it - seems you should be looking to them rather than the nanny state

    This is an Ad,

And I'm calling BS on the claim "Telstra…..but pointed me to TrueCall."
Telstra employees, call centre agents, etc don't recommend non Telstra supplied products or services like this.
They would have suggested you get a silent listing or change your phone number.

It is interesting to note that the poster only joined ozbargain this month and has not made any comments on ozbargain as yet.
What I have said does not prove anything but it certainly doesn't help the cause.
Have you reported this… can always let the mods try to sort it out.

      • +4

Look if they'd said "Normally $200, but now $160 for Easter weekend!" then they can claim it's a bargain (although I think maybe $30-50 is more closer to it's value).

Yep I & 3 others have reported it, but alas the slackers are drinking beer, watching TV & having a day off, bludgers.

        • Hi Nosdan, yes, I did join just to post that. I come to ozbargain occasionally to see what's going on. So for once I actually had a deal that I thought was worth posting so I posted it. Thanks for the very warm welcome.

      • +4

Completely untrue. Anybody can have a silent number. Unfortunately Telstra (I believe) charge extra for the non-service.

It still won't stop all nuisance calls - calls made by scammers who've found your number through places other than the phone book, or companies calling 'on behalf of another company you have done business with' will still happen with an unlisted number. Often nuisance callers ask for me by name, despite the house number being listed in the phone directory under another name. That means they found the number somewhere else.

        • +5

          @snook

Every home phone I've ever had with either Telstra or Optus has been unlisted, all I ever had to do was tell them I didn't want it listed and that made it happen. Never have I had to justify it in any way, it's just part of the service they offer. From what I recall, Telstra charged a bit for it, with Optus it's free.

        • I think Telstra charge something like $3.50 per month. I'm unlisted.

        • +1

I have an unlisted number. All I had to do was ask Telstra for it, and I pay a small fee per month to keep it unlisted.

I do not have "a dangerous job, an important position, or an extremely odd surname".

If you're getting one, ask the Telstra rep when was the last time it was used. The first number they tried to give me was from a former plumber, meaning I would have had "plumbing emergency" calls at all hours if I'd taken it.

I think all of my VOIP numbers are unlisted for free as well.

Also, I have a MyNetFone Whirlpool Saver number in my state that I only give to companies who demand a phone number. If it starts getting nuisance calls, I'll just drop it and get another.

    • You'd be amazed to hear that people may have an opinion of their own. Before the company I worked for had a certain product, I'd point customers to a couple of rivals all the time because they had the product they were looking for.

        Yes they are.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:voting_guidelines?rev…

Still not a valid comparison if it is illegal to use in australia. This item does not appear to have an RCM

Unfortunately the indenting system only works for the first 3 or 4 replies, thereafter everything is stacked under each other. I remember years ago before it worked this way,
          after the 5th
          or 6th reply,
          you'd only
          get a couple
          of words per
          line and
          extremely
          tall posts.

    • Great choice - telstra love getting people for uncertified equipment and blaming line issues on their gear. Just make damn sure you dont tell them you are using anything bought from overseas hey

  • +2

This full on just sounds like marketing. I'm inquiring about whether Telstra would actually recommend a specific product. Thinking not …

I have a different version of this. It's called a 'mobile phone', and it never receives spam calls. My landline stays unplugged.

    • This.

Although, I don't have a phone line (Naked adsl2+). I have a mobile for incoming calls, and on the very rare occasion I need to call anyone, I use Skype.

  • +2

I don't see what this box even achieves; you still get interrupted, and have to make a decision. Just as easy to answer the call and hang up once you realise its spam.
The ebay-linked device that automatically blocks 1200 numbers sounds like a better deal.
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/CPR-Call-Blocker-Call-Screening-B…

    • Some DECT phones and answering machines have the ability to black list numbers. E.g Panasonic DECT 6.0 series have a blacklist function.

Not sure if it can use wildcards though, for e.g block all 1200 numbers rather than a specific number.

    • +1

The sad bit is you can get in quite a lot of trouble for using overseas equipment on telstra's network. So sure, if you are game. But if you are just cheap you would be better off setting up an antique PC with asterisk and a voice modem - least you cant lose many times more in fines

      • Actually this is cheaper than the offer. Old PC - free-$45 (possibly raspberry pi), and a voice gateway from somewhere (eBay ?)

  • +1

I just put my home phone on instant Answering machine,Telemarketing Callers never leave a message. If its not a telemarketer I can just hear who is leaving me a voice message and choose to pickup or not.

    • -1

1 problem with that is that a LOT of people hang up as soon as they hear a machine

      • +1

We don't care about those people. If they can't be bothered to leave a message, why would we want to talk to them?

        • If you're a loner with no life then it would be devastating to miss a phone call.

  • I've always wondered, how exactly do telemarketers and such get your number to call you?

  • Here's one thing that may help some people to a certain extent - I asked Telstra what they could do for me about overseas telemarketers. They blocked all calls from overseas to (and from) my phone number. A few drawbacks - it means I can't phone overseas (just use Skype), and it won't stop VOIP callers. It also means you ahve an unusual dial tone (ut that reminds you you have this turned on).

  • Oh sod. Wouldn't mind this, but the deal is over.
