    Hold on… Hasn't IE8 always been free???
    \_/7

    • true but meal is never free…

  • You can just go to the last step and they still will donate… :)

Perhaps not if it is "per completed download", but they will probably reach the $1 million cap in any event.

Microsoft hopes charity push will spur IE downloads

One piece of the effort is a charity push in which Microsoft will donate meals to a food bank for each person that downloads IE 8 via a special "Browser for the Better" Web site. Technically, the company is donating $1.15 per completed download, up to a maximum of $1 million.

    • it would be nice if they published the total amount raised for now… Firefox 3.5 Beta FTW!!! Takes up much less resources as 3.0 and it's sooo much faster then all browsers.

I see it's good what Microsoft is doing, but in reality I don't see this as a 'bargain'. IE8 has always been free.

    • +5

The bargain/freebie is you can donate to a charitable cause for free. It is not about IE8 itself.

WTF are they feeding these homeless people for 14.3 cents a meal?? Terrible publicity stunt Microsoft.

PS I'm certain they passed the 1 million cap weeks ago and aren't mentioning this fact.

    • They do really need to work on their PR.

A worthy cause but the only reason I'd be d/ling IE8 is to see what breaks on my site now.

      • I've experienced the opposite. Virtually every site I've visited works fine with IE. I have experienced more sites that don't work or render properly with FF or Seamonkey. I abandoned FF after the memory leak dramas lead to poor performance. IE simply works for me on all my computers. I bet a large number of alternate-browser users simply use them because to some people, it's cool to be anti-microsoft. :)

I got hooked to Opera's mouse gestures at one stage, but i remember hitting pages that don't work correctly which work fine in IE, making me move back to it.

interestingly, there's an IE mouse gestures app, i should try that…

$1 million can buy a lot of food in bulk (and with whatever special arrangements they have with suppliers). The cost of a meal is not the price in a restaurant, or even what we pay at the supermarket.

      • +2

7.4 million meals for $1,000,000? It's not exactly going to be the chicken schnitzel is it.

        • You'd be surprised at what food costs, again not to mention possible special arrangements.

Regardless, it might not be something we'd buy but it would meet basic requirements. I would say it's better to feed a large number of needy people a basic meal than to feed a smaller number of people a nicer meal.

Something is better than starving to death.
And IE8 is not all that bad.
I have already installed and tried IE8 on two laptops ( one 32 bit and another 64 bit) and it has been trouble free till now.
Having said that, I still prefer Firefox for browsing- probably because I have got used to it, and because a plethora of add-ons are available.
And just for the record, I am using Google Chrome for writing this post.
I think what matters is that they are donating to charity.
Everyone loves to bash Microsoft, but you will be surprised to know how much they do for charity.
          Regards

@darkmattersunB6c0MV: good point… If IE8 gets my favourite addons i'd consider them. Like Adblock Plus with subscriptions and a heap of others…

i know!! jeez microsoft just give up
they always have the dumbest things to make u get IE like the WIN $10,000 PRIZE!!! treasure hunt whose website can only be accessed by IE8 =.=

I like the concept but would rather feed Australians than Americans. Having lived there, feeding is probably the last they need. Food is double the size but half the price.

    • +2

just for the sake of trivia… the baker heart institute stated last year that australia is the most obese country, toppling the USA. that's why that ad for white stag low carbs beer makes me cringe a little…
i agree with the food portions though!, it's crazy over there.

hehehe file download — save as — desktop — drag to recycle bin

I suspect "completed download" could require IE8 to be installed, with completion being registered when IE8 is run for the first time (automatically loading a Microsoft webpage).

  • I advise !!!CAUTION !!!

It did clash with my Norton Internet Security 2007/ upgraded to 2008
and I needed 5(!) hours with an IT person to change it back to IE 7 ,
( the phishing functions in both versions clashed, then the virus definitions upgrades were not executed,
not worth having the experience :o(

" Since upgrading to IE8 my phishing filter on Norton keeps turning off and I need to turn it back on?"

    HI

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team.

Internet Explorer 8 is currently compatible with all 2009 Norton products. If you are using a 2009 Norton product, please manually run LiveUpdate, possibly multiple times, until it informs you that all of the available updates have been applied.

If you are using a 2006-2008 Norton product, and have a valid subscription, you are entitled to a free update to the 2009 version of the product. If you need to update your software, make note of your current Activation Key and then visit the Norton Update Center at the link below, to download the latest installer.

    http://www.symantec.com/home_homeoffice/…

Once the installation is complete, launch your Norton product and manually run LiveUpdate to ensure you have the latest patches and definition files applied.

When the updates are complete, make sure that Anti-Phishing is turned on in the Norton interface, and that the Norton Toolbar is visible in your browser.

    Thank you,
    Mike

As stated previously, the bargain/freebie is you can donate to a charitable cause for free. It is not about IE8 itself.

Nor is anything forcing you to keep it after downloading.

Geez, does it matter how much each meal costs? $1mil is a lot. If they end up making 1 million meals instead of 7.4 million, it's still significant. My only gripe about this is that it's for US and not some third world country (yes, I'm being a hypocrite, charity is charity).

I can't imagine anyone going hungry unable to afford 15c meals.
Maximum donation $1,000,000 so most likely none of our downloads will actually contribute.
With the statistic 1 in 8 Americans going hungry, doing a little maths shows that it should cost $5,390,625 a day to keep everyone full if they had one of these meals per day.

    No deal.

    • -1

How nice of you to let us know

    • -5

PS. Agreed with pinchies. Its misleading.

  • -3

Ok, who is negative moding me? Would you care to explain why? If you could find a place where they are able to provide meals that cheaply, I would be happy to donate $50 to them.

  • -2

In Australia what we pay for a family meal feeds a family in Africa for 6 months.

I promise to download IE8 if MS promises to distroy all copies of Vista and never speak of it again….. waits for call
