beepmy60

While researching a cheaper alternative to Sonos, I came across "Beep". Check out what it can do here: https://www.thisisbeep.com/

The standard individual unit normally costs $149 + $20 shipping to Oz. They are having pre-order specials prior to the official launch, the current one being $50 off however, I still have the code for the previous deal that recently ended "beepmy60" that's still functioning that'll give you 60% off the original $149.

Expected to ship Fall 2014

If a bargain I've posted in the past has helped you out or you're feeling generous, it'd be great if you could use my referal link when purchasing. http://thisisbeep.com/QwKzGdcW

  • FYI, another interesting product I came across was "Rocki" http://www.myrocki.com/ After reading negative reviews on the device and the current state of the supporting software I decided to give Beep a go.

Alright, I think I have a use for this in a concealed bathroom system, so I've ordered with your code. Now I have to find a small amplifier of some sort and some small in-wall, weather proof speakers. It's going to be awesome.

  • if it wasnt an ugly copper colour i would consider it.

Wow that's ad is cringe-worthy! The product looks good though

  • $59 + $20 Shipping = $79USD

Correct. The shipping stays the same price regardless how many you order, hence I didn't list it in the title.

  • Interesting product but without being able to test the audio app for playing my own music collection I'm thinking chromecast is the better solution for wireless audio in my case as I don't use pandora etc.

    • I think that assumes an HDMI connection, but totally makes sense if you're going into a full amp with hdmi.

If you just want to connect to speakers without the receiver you can actually get a cheap adapter such as this:
        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HDMI-to-VGA-Adapter-with-Audio-/1…

Then you just need a typical usb charger to power the chromecast.. some PC speakers these days have a usb port on them you can plug it into those.

        • thanks, but my requirement is that it's controllable by android, low power, can be attached to moisture resistant speakers, … that's about it. This Beep thing + mini amp + 6" in ceiling speakers looks like the solution. It is a bit odd at that the Beep will be the most expensive component, but all up I think it will cost me <$200, which is pretty great for fully integrated bathroom sound. A pity my wife won't be sleeping in any more, but whatever.

Could also try a Raspberry Pi. Could run mpd controlled via MPDroid.

        • That would probably work fine, but might save me $40, while costing me time; assuming all things Rasberry Pi take time to set up and configure.

        • I've gone with Logitech's Squeezebox Server software, but without any of the actual Squeezebox hardware.

One player is a Raspberry Pi with a wifi adapter ($50), running "squeezelite" (free open source software) plugged into some logitech LS2.1 speakers ($25).

Another player is an old Nexus S android phone (? no idea what it's worth now) running a Squeezeplayer app ($1.69 on the play store), plugged into some Logitech S715i speakers (clearance sale at big W - about $60).

The third player is also the server. It's a HP N54L microserver plugged into my loungeroom amplifier. It holds all the music, runs the server software, and also runs Squeezelite player software.

It's all controllable with the free Logitech Squeezebox app in the google android play store.

But, yes, Time was certainly involved with all this. Not heaps though. The Raspberry Pi probably took the longest.

        • Some great options. I've settled on the Beep device + Dayton Audio DTA-1 Amplifier (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001PNOH2I/ref=oh_details_o…) + Pyle Home PWRC51 5.25-Inch in wall speakers (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0013VH50I/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_ttl?…).

All up about $180. But I get the look of in-wall speakers, a small amp I never have to worry about and, I'm hopeful, reliable connection to the Beep. The amp + Beep will be behind a concealed hatch that I'll need a ladder to get to, so not keen to be servicing it repeatedly…reminds me I'll have to check the wifi signal in the ceiling cavity.

I think (hope) I've made the right choice for reliability, price, and look / moisture resistance.

Those are some great ideas though. I might refer to that if I have to extend further under different conditions.

  • Am I correct in saying that this device does not simply act as a 'audio output' for your phone/PC but must connect to a network service ie Pandora, media servers etc? Would this mean then, that audio sources is very much limited to "integrated directly with Pandora, with more services on the way."? If this is the case then this device seems quite limited, certainly for the normal $149 price. Or have I missed the point?

Personally I will be trying this app(or something similar) installed on a spare and/or cheap android phone.

Unless I have misread you are mostly correct although they apparently have their own app to allow you to send your personal music collection on your device to the beep.. the quality of said app though is anyone's guess. Hence why I'm steering clear of this one. Definitely one for Pandora fans.

    • Not correct. This unit will play from a networked PC or NAS. http://site.thisisbeep.com/blog/2014/2/14/announcing-compute…

      • Yes, I read that too, but I expect that it will only work if your PC or NAS is providing some sort of network media server for the Beep to connect to eg DLNA. Again, still very limited. There is a distinct lack of details on any webpage about this device.

Sounds like they are trying to figure it out… In the future… Probably…

        Meanwhile Sonos is awesome.

  • I didn't realise how expensive the Sonos connect was. I thought it would be around the cost of an Airport express/Apple TV due to the similarities in what they can achieve.

Thanks for putting me onto this. It seems far more reasonably priced for now.

      Sonos Connect is ridiculously expensive.

But Sonos Play's are much better value I believe. And they sound great - you really have to compare them against cheap speakers you are going to use.

I can't see any similarities between Airport Express and Sonos though. Beep is similar to Airport Express. But not Sonos.

Airport express is "wireless speaker" only (without speakers though) - you need an Apple device to stream music into Airport Express (Airplay only).
On the other side Sonos got everything except Airplay.

Sonos Play is all-in-one player - it can play your music from NAS (or shared folder) itself (no services required), it can play huge number of internet radios (any internet radio available via TuneIn), it can play internet services like Pandora, Spotify and etc.

And if you have few of them you can sync them to play the same music in different rooms - awesome (sorta magic). :)))

  • Interesting… I've been searching for exactly the same thing since I picked up the Audio engine A5+ the other day from the PCCG deal the other day and am now looking to use those as a spare set of wireless speakers.

The Beep seems interesting and is relatively cheap with the discount, but it seems very limited on what it supports..

Might be better off paying a little extra and just get the airport extreme for airplay…

    • If you are going to stream from iTunes or Apple devices only - Airport Extreme is a good choice.

      • Well, no I'm not.

Doing some searching, I found quite a few plugins for pc apps such as winamp that streams to airplay.

Aren't there any third party apps for android that can stream to airplay?

        • So far I haven't seen any bug-free third party Airplay software/hardware - Airplay protocol is not open so you either pay Apple a fee or do buggy reverse engineering. :(((

  • I think it's important to note that this is missing the Sonos' most crucial feature - the ability to set and forget the source (eg: Sonos hosts the stream, not your device).

Other than that, looks to be a good alternative if you simply want to sync music across multiple speakers.

    • Beep hosts the steam too. Unless you're playing music files direct from your phone there's no reason you couldn't leave your Wi-Fi range and the music wouldn't continue.

  • I just wanted to say I absolutely love my sonos. Early adopter, ordered from the US. Many years on still going strong. One of my top three 3 gadgets. Do compare the quality of the speakers.

The new app update looks amazing too. A play 5 did my whole 3 level apartment. I have that and the sound bar now.
