Portable Butane Heater $50 at Aldi This Saturday

60

I picked up a similar heater to this a few years ago on chuckout at BigW, and it gets a good workout during the cooler months. They run off 220g butane cans that can be bought in a 4 pack at many places for less than $5.

If you're going to run it flat out, Aldi says it will last a little over 2 hours on a single can. We tend to not have to run it flat out most of the time and tend to get about 6 hours from a can of gas. Great for camping and outdoors. NOT for use in enclosed spaces.

EDIT

Specially for JV ;) They're usually around the $100 to $150 mark

    Butane's a bastard gas.

Why is this a bargain ?

    • For only $50 you get to:

Be warm for a little while.
      Burn down your house.
      Make a legit insurance claim.
      ……
      Profit $$$$

Why does jv troll almost every post on this site?

      • +3

JV asks the questions that needs to be asked. Sometimes he's (assuming a he) right, sometimes he's wrong but he's always welcome in my books.

How is asking "why is it a bargain" trolling? How much do these usually go for? Is it a legitimate discount over the usual price?

        • +6

You can't be serious, have you looked through his comment history? His comments are very rarely constructive. Eg. "Why is this a bargain?" How about simply providing a better price somewhere else. Oh there's jokes, such wonderful jokes …

I understand he's OzBargain royalty or something but that doesn't seem like an excuse to add non-constructive comments on almost every single thread. Especially when there is a "neg vote" function for this exact purpose.

This particular deal doesn't excite me much either but I don't need to tell everyone how unimpressed I am personally on almost every single thread.

Just my 2 cents, I guess I'll go back to lurking.

        • Damn right I'm serious. I'm on this site all day every day, and I see pretty much all of JVs posts.

Lame ass jokes aside, JV will ask questions (like here) seeking justifications for deals, ensuring adherence to posting guidelines, calling out dodgy deals by pointing out cheaper options or pulling up cached versions, or even - I know it's hard to believe - praising a deal and/or product.

As I said, sometimes he's right, sometimes he's wrong but at the very least, it will provoke examination or discussion about the deal. Neg's have a very specific purpose on this site, and should only be used to call out dodgy deals. Notice JV has just asked for justification for this deal, as none has been provided in the description. He has not neg'd or pos'd, presumable because there is no justification to do so.

I appreciate the hell out of that - if no ones questions what is posted, this site will just end up being blanketed with crappy ads and shonky deals, making the gems harder to find.

I understand why he rubs people the wrong way, hell I find him annoying sometimes myself. But I find he brings way more positives than negatives, and that's probably why he's "OzBargain royalty".

That's my 2 cents - and to reiterate, there is no way in hell asking why something should be considered a bargain is trolling.

Completely agree here. I don't want to start a fan club or anything, but generally jv's comments will make me think a bit more before I press the 'buy now' button, and for me that's a good thing.

        • -1

Eg. "Why is this a bargain?" How about simply providing a better price somewhere else

The OP has not provided any information to justify why this is as a bargain.
          (read the deal posting rules)

Has it been reduced from their normal price?
Is it the cheapest price for this item?

As far as I can see, they are just advertising Aldi's normal price…

By the way, how are your comments constructive in discussing this deal ???

      • +12

Is JV a person or just a bot that posts from a limited set of responses?

Why is this a bargain ?

      Likewise why isnt it?

Give us a break if you know, why not enlighten us…

        • Similar types of products retail around $100

Perfect! Why don't you point some of those out. That will shut JV up and be beneficial to the discussion at the same time.

As per the posting guidelines "Summarise briefly why it is a bargain - why did you buy it or consider it worth sharing? How does the price compare to elsewhere? Can you comment from personal experience on the quality of the product?"

I don't see that outlined in the description. Guess what, if you don't do it, someone like JV is going to ask the question. It's up to the poster to justify why something should be considered a bargain - we can only debate those merits as they are provided

        • +1

Some fair comments, but those who know that these are bargains will say so, those who dont can just skip the deal like many others do, rather than make assumptions. People dont have to explain what Pepsi does or that 44c cans are great deals for those who like it.

And the poster went to the trouble to post the deal, so maybe JV could just check before they shoot their mouth off.

BTW a very simple Google for those who cant recognise the value will give a clue

          eg Butane Gas heater

          http://www.bcf.com.au/online-store/products/Gasmate-Portable… $149

          http://www.getprice.com.au/companion-portable-butane-gas-cam… $99

Maybe some here (not you) could simple remember - if it doesnt add it detracts.

        • -2

          JV could just check

          Shouldn't have to check.

The OP should mention why this is a bargain…

        • Sorry of course I forgot…

But rather than waste your time here, you need to let others know that this deal doesnt comply either

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/139843

        • Anyone who is in the market for such a product would already know it was a good price.

Those who have no interest can simply skip past the post, and if it raises the interest of those who may have a use for it, but didn't know such a product existed, then my post has done its job.

    • Why is this a bargain ?

Because if you need one, it's a pretty good price for it????!!!

They're usually around the $100 to $150 mark, and anything cheaper than this you'll have to pay postage to receive it, and won't have the benefit of Aldi's no questions asked return policy if you're not happy with it.

      • -1

They're usually around the $100 to $150 mark

Would be useful if you put that in the description then.

Based on what you posted, it doesn't look like a bargain, it's just Aldi's normal advertised price.
You should mention the discount or saving…

    • Cant see the dupe here. Posting something about pages in a catalog, isnt a post at all.

Wow, that's a very expensive heating solution.

I think those electric heaters would be cheaper to run.

Those portable gas heaters don't provide much heat. I use those portable gas cookers to do hot pot and it doesn't really heat up the house at all. It also uses 1 can of butane.

    • I think those electric heaters would be cheaper to run.

How long an extension cord do you have? I can take this 1000 k's out into the bush (when it's not fire season).

Your cooker is meant to heat your food, not your house, and as stated in the original post, these are NOT suitable for enclosed spaces. If you're wanting something to heat your house in the dead of Winter, this is probably not the appropriate heater. You'll kill yourself with the fumes if you use it in a shut-up house.

  • kerosene heaters FTW

  • Valid question jv.
There is no mention of a regular price in the post nor is there any indication of a saving.

I did find reference to it online…
    http://www.productsoutdoors.co.uk/review-Hottie-Portable-Hea… Price: £24.99 (50 AUD)
    http://www.towsure.com/product/Hottie_Portable_Gas_Camping_H… Price £27.95 (45 AUD)
I did not look at shipping as I have no intention of buying. (and I only searched for about 1 min)
These are obviously european references as that is where Aldi come from.

Bottom line This is a very informative post if you need a camping stove but perhaps NOT a bargain.
If similar products sell for about $100 in Aus then we are being cheated.

  • These are not as bad as they sound.

    2 hours from a 220g can @50kj/g is 5.5Mj/hr, about 1500W.
And not much more energy cost than an electric heater, but twice the cost of LPG refills.

  • Bought the heater today and its actually quite good. cant wait to use it when i go fishing :)
