  • Please update deal title.

It's actually Dick Smith @ David Jones $199 and listed on there web site.
Dick Smith retail stores list this at $397.

NOTE: both sites listing this as not available yet. Due to late delivery of stock.

    • The $397 product that you linked seems to be different - 'SEAGATE Backup Plus Fast 4TB Portable Hard Drive' which is a pre-order. The item for this deal is a clearance item, presumably older model.

      • Thanks. Just noticed the different product codes.

        • Yep, the $397 drive is the first of the 4TB PORTABLE drives…

"The highest capacity, 2.5-inch portable hard drive on the market
USB 3.0-powered: no bulky external power supply needed"

        • +1

Just do a google on how they managed to make 4TB on a portable and you will understand that it might not be as reliable as you might think. Until they create a real portable 4TB (one HDD with no RAID) I will keep buying portable 2TB

    • Dick does it again with another 10% off - this means the item in question has been removed of their web https://www.dicksmith.com.au/usb-hard-drives/seagate-backup-…

      • Static Ice still shows both DSE and David Jones $199 for this. Since DSE now run the it department of David Jones.

        • DSE link from StaticIce linked to a 404 Page Not Found Error, I assume they took it off on purpose due to the 10% store wide promo

  • Thank you for your feedback
    Have a nice day

  • Nice find earth! Thanks :)

    • Thanks TA

Now time to get back to work…….sigh

      See you soon

      Have a nice day

  • Can you strip the drives out of the enclosure and use in a NAS?

    • ofcourse you can. but no more warranty

  • I had a few of the Seagate backup HDDs which failed on me. They're fine for random multimedia and miscellaneous files, but I'd be weary of putting photos, documents, et into them.

    • What are your preferred brand/s and versions of hard drives.

      • -1

        If I could jump in;
        For RAID;

Wd red drives are tops ATM

Day to day…..anyone's guess but I wouldn't buy green or normal drives anymore. Just not worth it, go for the middle of the road to enterprise models.

  • They're clearly stated for 'Backup'. If you use them for primary storage, you've got no one to blame except yourself.

If you need external primary storage, look for a raid1 storage and make sure you back that up on a regular basis.

I had a 9tb raid 5 recently fail on me. I was prepared and had another 9tb raid5 backup. If you can't afford to loose data, you need to backup, backup, backup! I can't stress that enough.

I make a point of this every single time I talk to family/friends/colleagues about external USB drives.

They fail, they fail a lot. As someone who has worked in IT for a long time I have lost count of how many external drives I have seen fail. Do not ever rely on a single USB drive for holding a single copy of your data, ever.

      • Ditto…..can't say this enuff either!

  • Kind of no point if no one can actually buy it anywhere?

  • It says "limited clearance stock" - Officeworks has been out of stock of these for ages now.
So I would say that any stock DJ/DSE get will be extremely limited.
The new version of the Backup Plus lays flat as opposed to vertical. I have one of the verticals when they were back down around the $189 mark last year, should've bought two!

  • Available at Amazon for $186.94 US if anyone really wants this particular drive and cant find it at DSE/DJ

  • If you're looking for a bare bones 4TB with no NAS functionality, this is not a good price. Last year they were going for around $170-180. Definitely hold off and let prices get back to normal before pulling the trigger.
