  • No bargain. You can get vitamin d by simply going outside during the day.

I think the capsules are for people who are allergic to sun light.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

    • +2

Compared it to iHerb or vitacost's products,it is still overpriced.

    • Sufficient sunlight is only available during the warmer months 12-2pm., not during winter.

        this is 'OZ'bargian, right?

    • Mind you, some people get sunburn easily.

    • You can get vitamin d by simply going outside during the day.

yes, your body can produce vitamin d by sun exposure, but it might not be sufficient, especially in dark-skinned people, in which case vitamin d supplements are appropriate. i think it is common for people to be vitamin d insufficient.

vitamin d & calcium has a close relationship which is why they come together as a supplement

For many people, their lifestyles prevent them from getting enough sunlight each day. People who go to work (indoors) from sunrise or earlier, and come home after dark, for example. People who are ill and house or hospital-bound. It's surprisingly easy to become very deficient in Vitamin D.

I used to spend at least 10 minutes in full sun in the middle of the day, yet my VitD levels were hideously low (12 nmol/L when it should be between 51-140).

I was quite ill at the time, too, which meant I didn't go out as much as I should have to get extra sunlight. I also have osteoporosis which means I need to take high dose calcium supplements… along with the extra vitamin D to help calcium absorption.

This goes for loads of people out there. Calcium deficiencies are common and usually require vitamin D supplementation for best results.

      • After your story, who'd be a turnip these days.

    • But what about vampires?
      They need vitamin D too.

360 for AUD10 + AUD6 shipping. Cheaper if you buy more. Actually, 720 for $20.79 shipped.

I use that brand and it's no different to any other out there. Chemist Warehouse make most of their income from selling this stuff at inflated prices.

    • Not to mention that's 5x more potent (5000iu vs 1000iu)

You'd be surprised how many people are vitamin d deficient. A general blood test at your gp can measure it - found I was under. Going out in the sun is great but if you've already had a skin cancer removed, like I have, I'd rather take a supplement. Surprising thing was, taking 1000 IU a day barely bumped me back into the normal range.

i wouldn't say all vitamin pills are useless. they may be appropriate for targeting specific deficiencies. the article you have cited is not even related to vitamin d.

i think multi-vitamin pills are a waste of money and certainly studies have shown that anti-oxidant supplements can be harmful.

    • I think if you do your literature review properly you will find that vitamin D is actually one of the few supplements which are in fact useful.

    • You're not very good at researching, are you.

    • the article basically said vitamins wont prevent cancer or heart disease… which is common knowledge …

it also said itll be the same as eating fruit and veges. problem is people dont eat enough hence they need vitamins

This one has calcium. I didn't get that until one of the comments mentioned it. Calcium should be mentioned in the title.

I was severely vit d deficient and when I started taking supps, my life changed remarkably. I urge everyone to have their levels checked. Even if you are not dark skinned on the surface, your genetic makeup can inhibit your body's ability to synthesize sunlight into the hormone we call vitamin D.

I buy mine from iherb. One of the best companies for Aussies. They have really great deals on spices that are overpriced here. You can get vitamin D in 10,000 units pills and 5,000. In oz, the best you can get is 1000.

    • Yes, OP should put Calcium & Vit D in title otherwise it's confusing what deal is being mentioned. They sell a separate product with Vit D only which happens to be the same price: http://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/product.asp?id=68620&pnam…

Is this Chemist Warehouse normal reduced price for these products?

      • There was no product link initially, so maybe I linked the wrong item.

you can get up ot 50000ui vitamin D in Australia but only 1000ui is over the counter
if you feel you need over 1000ui you should be consulting your GP anyway

For everybody that had something helpful to say, thank you.

For everybody that didn't, well, no thanks to you. :P

For me personally, I've been told by the doctor a couple of years ago that I was Vitamin D deficient. Between, working in an office job, and people telling you not to get too much sun for fear of skin cancer and winter not being far away, this particular brand was recommended by the doctor. Hence I shared the deal, because if someone else had shared it, I would have appreciated it. A quick look in previous deals, like this one: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/69263 got 20 positive votes, so if it was useful to 20 people then, I just hope that it is useful to people now.

Low vitamin D levels have been linked to depression, (though the research has not said that depression causes low vitamin D levels or vice versa, just that there is a link), and when I got sick quite frequently a few months ago, the doctor said to take more Vitamin D, so my guess is it has some link to better health anyway.

Everyone have a nice day now.

  • While for most people, vitamin and mineral supplements are waste as your body only absorbs what it needs. There are also people who can't whose bodies can't get enough no matter what they do regardless of their diet and lifestyle.

e.g. Someone who has had an organ transplant and heart surgery. Their medication may prevent them from absorbing certain vitamins and minerals like Vit D and Magnesium either because they can't/not allowed to spend that much time in the sun or they pee it all out cos of fluid tablets.

Upshot being, if you spend $600 a year on a single supplement that goes straight through you and you're still deficient. It's not on PBS unless you're of aboriginal or Torres Straight Islander descent.

These chemist deals on vitamins and minerals saves people hundreds of dollars a year. ….. as opposed to deals where it's a discount on a 'figure in the air' prices for intangible things like software …. and how many gaming headsets and monitors does one really need ?

This is a 'bargain' cos it is still a substantial discount on the products normal pricing (not RRP) , plain and simple. No price match this from across town. No 'cash back' this bit, use this debit card and hand over your first born child while standing on your head. Negging something like this is just … bad form.
