Maybe good for bitcoin mining eh?

    • Scrypt coins not bitcoin

    • I thought those days are over?

      Go away bloody miners!

Damn these cards, they're taking away our mining jobs!

  • +3

I think this is a decent price for the card at the moment, but for any unaware, this is basically a re-badged 7970, which was going for around ~250 at one stage before the coin mining craze. If you need a card now, this is a good option (maybe even better price than what you'd get in the US), but there are hopefuls like me that are waiting for some sort of coin crash to flood the market with cheap used 7970s.

which was going for around ~250 at one stage before the coin mining craze.

Feel free to correct me, but the lowest the 7970 ever sold for before all stock dried up, at least from those deals that made their way onto OB, was $289.

Other than that, I agree, hence why I bought old stock rather than paying these inflated prices for essentially the same thing. On benchmarks my OC'ed MSI 7970 (stock Tahiti chip) is actually faster than most 280X's.

That being said, there are no 7970s left in the wild, so this is the next best thing at the moment.

      • You're right, that is the lowest I've seen it too (in AUS). I was thinking of the 7950 for the $250 price.

Yeah the cheaper 7970s were all around $300 and they were clocked a bit slower than this. IIRC the 7970 Ghz (which is more comparable to the 280X) were closer to $400+.

        • IIRC the 7970 Ghz (which is more comparable to the 280X)

It's identical. The 280X (a.k.a. Tahiti XTL) is a better-binned Tahiti XT2 chip with a better ASIC that runs cooler and overclocks better. Likewise, the Tahiti XT2 (7970 GE) is a slightly better Tahiti XT chip.

This is not a new generation of architecture on a smaller fab/die size, the transistor count is identical (4313 for the 7970, 7970 GE and R9 280X), the die size is identical, and the core config (number of ROPs, shader units, texture units) is identical.

The performance differences anyone sees between Tahiti XT/Tahiti XT2/Tahiti XTL are solely due to clock speeds, and with the right luck, you can find a vanilla 7970 that will equal or surpass a 7970 GE and a 7970 GE that will surpass a R9 280X. Like I said, my MSI 7970 has a better pixel/texture fillrate and more memory bandwidth than a 280X, after OC'ing it.

It's a bunch of semantics designed to get people to spend more for less, essentially.

This is a great price, but to be realistic for most people it will be $350 after shipping and CC/paypal fee.

Market price is $375 from a local store. Still cheap but not super-ultra-bargain.

I stopped buy from PCCG because of shipping/insurance costs.

        • -1

          Sub-Total: $329.00
          Paypal surcharge (2%): $7.13
eParcel PP Express: $27.58 (PP=Parcel Protection 2% of total order)
          Total: $363.71

      • after shipping and CC/paypal fee.

Bank deposit is always an option but it does take forever to clear.

PCCG are ridiculous with their surcharges and shipping costs.
