48% off Low-Profile Wide-Lens Waterproof 1080p Action Cam w/ GPS: Contour+2 $285 @ Harvey Norman

90

This is Contour's flagship video camera, and it's almost 50% off at Harvey Norman right now. I just got the last one from Gordon, but there are still some left in stock elsewhere. Delivery was $5.95, but I went with the free pickup option.

The camera itself is pretty awesome:

  • The battery is removable and should last about 3 hours.
  • It pairs with iphone or android over bluetooth and allows you to see what the camera sees in real time, as well as record and change settings.
  • Without a phone you can still define two different presets to use, and it records up to 60FPS 1080p, or 720p at the widest 170 degree lens setting. (If a 120FPS framerate or 1080p at maximum angle is important to you, then you might need the GoPro instead.)
  • It has built in GPS and can apparently overlay your route on top of the video (I haven't tested this feature yet.)
  • You can connect it straight to a TV with the included HDMI cable.
  • Has both an internal mic, and an external mic jack.
  • The lens can be rotated, and it projects a laser line so you can get it perfectly level.
  • There are a lot of extras included in the box, including a 60M fully waterproof case, a 4GB sd card, 2 different mounts, usb & hdmi cables, lens cap and tether.
  • It's also a really nice low-profile shape; doesn't stick out so far like the GoPros.
  • Sound and video quality is similar to GoPro's best.

A deal was posted a few days ago for low-end version of this camera (the ROAM 2) which is still available $190, but this is around the same price as The Good Guys and Ted's Cameras are selling it for, and it has been sold for as low as $119 in the past, so it's not that amazing. On the other hand I don't think the Contour+2 has ever been at such a low price in Aus.

  • Ditto, whattddaya great bargain!

  • cheap because Contour the company died 6 months ago

EDIT: oh.. sold and reopened few months later

    • Yeah they seem to be quite active again, the firmware and android app have been updated since they reopened, and they say there is a new release of the desktop program on the way too.

      • hope so, storyteller isnt very good. little more than windows media player
i use the gopro app for videos

  • how is it different from contour roam?

    • The Roam2 does not have GPS, bluetooth, a removable/swappable battery, HDMI output or an external mic. It also does not come with the waterproof case, although it can be bought separately. It only has one shooting mode, a computer is required to change any options. At full res it can only shoot at 30 fps.

      • mmm… I just start riding motorcycle for about three weeks and I am thinking about getting an action camera. But I havent see any rider on the that has a camera on their helmet…

        • …and for good reason. Check youtube for bad shit that happens to those that do.

        • Heh I actually bought it for riding… a bunch of people were talking about this camera on the Sydney Riders facebook group.

I've only been riding since December, and in case of a car accident I want to make sure I have evidence of what happened. For that I really don't need all the fancy features but the price made this model too tempting. It will be nice to have a backup battery and be able to track my rides though.

        • What happens to them Steptoe?

        • Should I spend $285 on boots, protective pad, better tyre etc… or this?

        • You mean got busted by cops? as I heard it's illegal to have anything attached to helmet?

i wear the roam2, its waterproof without the case, and smaller profile compared to my gopro. i use it daily and so far have a couple of clips to keep from great adelaide drivers

I've been looking at this too as I ride a motorbike, but I'm not sure if you can stick any on helmet as it I suspect it old mean helmet then breaches Australian standards…and things like being open to fines, not covered by insurance etc. come into play. Please don't quote me on this I wish I knew the right answer, mounted on the bike itself I suspect would be ok. Regardless, ride safe brother.

  • If you're on a tight budget I think first priority is protective gear Ygyf.

I'm not sure about the law regarding helmet cams. It's illegal to make modifications to the helmet, but the camera mount is just stuck on with adhesive and doesn't change the structure of the helmet. I heard there was a cop who gave a rider a ticket for it down in Vic, but then rescinded it later. On the off chance that I did recieve a ticket for it, I'd make sure to bring up this photo on the NSW Police facebook page ;)

  • This good as a dash can too?

    • Sure.

      • +1

for a car a dash cam would be better, turns on and off with the car etc

    • +1

As a simple dashcam yes it'll do the trick with the correct mount.

However, for the price range you can get dedicated dashcams with much better features like loop recording, event button, shock sensors for automatic saving of events, auto locking of files, parking mode etc…

    Thanks OP.

Seems to be all sold out now. Lucked out and ordered just after midnight so managed to secure one - confirmation just came through.

Just as well since I also ordered some mounts off eBay for it before I got the confirmation :)
