Hong Kong Return ex Melb $549, Syd $544, Perth $508, GC $583 with AIR ASIA

1120

Spent a little time putting this one together, but well worth it. It's Air Asia's new special, and Hong Kong appears to be the best value destination. Had to play around with dates to get the best possible prices for each city. Unfortunately, there are no Air Asia flights from Adelaide to HK. Good luck!

Used the following dates in this test:

Depart 29/04 Return 09/05 Melbourne
Depart 28/04 Return 08/05 Sydney
Depart 12/05 Return 21/05 Perth
Depart 27/04 Return 08/05 Gold Coast

Booking Period: 24 March 2014 - 30 March 2014
Travel Period: 01 April 2014 - 15 August 2014

EDIT: Just noticed this post is also Air Asia. It was submitted 13 minutes before mine. Not a word of a lie, I was working on this deal for around 40 minutes, and submitted without knowing ramcub had already posted his deal. SORRY!

Not a particularly enticing deal. Cathay had several sales late last and early this year that got very close to those price: $654 PER-HKG return, slightly cheaper from MEL/SYD. This included luggage, meals, etc and is a non-stop flight, also earns QF miles.

I personally would wait for the next Cathay sale. But of course that might never come :-P

    • I total agree with you, I don't why somebody neg your comment.

@letmecry: thanks for your support. You never know why people do things…

Of course there are lots of different scenarios. If someone definitely needs a flight at a given time during the above sale period, this deal can be quite good for them.

If someone just sees: "oh, Hong Kong has become cheap, maybe I should go there", then they should be informed that better deals than this one have been around and with a bit of patience are likely to come back.

Just for reference, this is one of the past sales I meant: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/128093

        • I'm looking to travel to japan via hong kong in november… looking at cathay pacific… are they likely to have a sale in the next several months?

        • They had a good one via that route last year for November. Fingers crossed.

        • Thanks schnoz. When was the sale?

    • Does Cathay still earn QF miles? I thought they split from Cathay and went to Emirates?
      Could be wrong…

      • Nope, Cathay is part of the oneworld alliance, which Qantas is also a part of. There is a little bit of a feud going on between the two route wise but other than that nothing has changed.

Qantas joined with Emirates in addition to the oneworld alliance.

        Yes and no.

        http://www.qantas.com.au/fflyer/dyn/partners/airline/cathay-…

Always check the exact class that you are booking at the time of booking, and make sure that they are redeemable.

Eg. I booked some connecting CX and KA flights via Qantas.com The Qantas segements earnt points, but the CX/KA flights did not.

But in short, if you buy tickets that are on special/discount, and if its not a QF coded flight. ALWAY ASSUME THAT YOU WILL NOT GET ANY POINTS.

        • Thanks for your link: it shows you should earn points on CX flights. Economy 1 point per mile, discount economy 0.5 points per mile.

If you did not receive them, lodge a claims form - I had trouble getting points from an Emirates flight and got them credited within a few days.

        • same thing happened to me. 4x CX coded flights Sydney to Beijing return, thinking i'd be getting points, as that was advertised…… got nothing. Qantas weaselled out of everything.

        • The link shows the discount economy classes that earn points. There are also discount economy classes that DON'T earn points.

          From the link.
"Points are not earned when travelling in classes other than those specified."

Btw I did claim and got

          UNSUCCESSFUL - INELIGIBLE BKG CLASS

I downvoted your comment because the Cathay deal is $146 (nearly 30%) more expensive than AirAsia. Luggage, meals, etc isn't worth that much.

      • When you add 20-30kg to the AirAsia, what price do you get to? I assume most people would.
I'll give you a hint: $102 to add luggage on AirAsia.

The price that is left over ($44) is not only meals, seat comfort and entertainment. Also, direct flight (not via KL!) and less likely to be delayed.

        • Also, CX has a number of flights per day giving you options for departure and arrival time. While the particular Air Asia flights that I look had decent departure and arrival (leaving midnight Melbourne and arrive at lunch in Hong Kong). But some of these low cost carriers depart and arrive and weird hours (cheaper airport slots)

Say that you have a really late arrival time for the out bound flight, your only option of getting to your hotel etc might be by taxi. But if you arrived in the morning or afternoon, you had some sleep on the flight, you can take the public transport and have plenty of time to get to the hotel. So make sure all these other costs are considered when booking a flight, and your destination is the bed that you will be sleeping on, not the city.

        • If you're taking 30kg to anywhere then I suspect you're not a budget-minded traveler in the first place

I thought AirAsia is part of Malaysia Airline?? Not too keen after what happened last couple weeks. Not to mention the KL airport sucks big time with AirAsia terminal.

    • +7

You kind of answered yourself. No, they are not part of MAS - that could explain why they have to use that crappy terminal. That said: the food court next to it is dirt cheap and the bus service to KL is great value.

      • Nothing wrong with lcc terminal, and it'll be even better when they finally upgrade it. If you want to see a crappy airport, go to LAX. Airasia are regarded as one of the best low cost carriers in the world.

    • From:http://www.seatplans.com/airlines/AirAsiaX

Air Asia X is owned by a group of private investors, including Sir Richard Branson. Aero Ventures Sdn is the major shareholder, with 48%, Virgin Group has 16%, Air Asia staff 16%, Orix 10% and Manara Consortium 10%.

Does this airasia plan include luggage? (Apparently Not -> Add $102 for baggage)

Also, it's not a direct flight as it goes to Kuala Lumpar first. It is also a malaysian airline if anyone thinks the recent events will affect their decision.

I'm flying Qantas from Sydney to Hong Kong, just under $800 with luggage included in May, flying the Airbus A380.

(My total cost via the AirAsia quotation system is $666 (Includes Fuel Surcharge and Airport Taxes) + $102 (Baggage) = [$768] May 29 to 11 Jun) So, it's pretty price competitive to check around for other offers and experience a bigger-safer plane, if that suits your tastes.

Can anyone find me a better deal? I think it was the best at the travel agent.

  • Thanks for the info TA. I will happily fly with them again.

As a note the LCCT (low cost terminal) in KL is due to open in May this year (but has been pushed back several times) http://www.klia2.info/about-klia2#when-is-klia2-ready It should be a nice upgrade from the existing shed.

That said the old LCCT isn't the end of the world and I've spend time there a few times in the last couple of years. I was actually there during the unfolding security incident and nothing seemed to be outwardly different. Still sailed through customs and immigration (less than 10 minutes to be out the door).

As a reference the flight I did was MEL-KUL(stop over for 5 days, KUL-KIX(Osaka), HND(Haneda-Tokyo)-KUL-MEL for about $550 with all taxes and a part share of a 20kg checked bag (yes I'm that cheap). Plenty of legroom on any flight over 4 hours - airasia x flights - (I'm 185cm), shorter flights I believe have smaller planes with less room (only time I have had this was KUL-HKT (Phuket) - Was fine for that amount of time.

Air Asia is a great airline. Both MAS and Qantas could learn a thing or two in terms of how to run a profitable airline…
Not only does AA offer great value, they have a great safety record and are the low cost carrier of the year for 5 years running or something…
I've done over 50 flights with them and no issues to note.

Just booked Jetstar MEL to SIN, DPS to MEL for $489 all up.

LCCT is a shitter yes, and these days I happily pay a few hundred extra for a full service airline, unless the low cost carriers offer great value… but as locutus above said, it is not the end of the world and you can't beat Malaysian food. No hype.

As for current events - when it is your time, it is your time. If you are scared, stay home and peruse spankwire.
