Allans Billy Hyde Stock Clearance - Up to 75% Off (Guitars, Keyboards, Amps)

70

For once - Allans Billy Hyde is offering moderately decent deals on their products; and to be honest - some of these deals are killer (see below)

The best deal I saw - was the Epiphone Les Paul Standard in Pelham Blue. The Epi LP standards are worlds above the cheaper models such as the Epi LP Jr, the LP100, etc. For $299 - it's a crazy good deal for a nice guitar. I've owned many Epi LP standards which far surpass your average Gibson LP Jr and even the odd Gibson LP Studio. The set neck and the humbuckers are nice too. For $299 - you actually can't complain. Paired with a cheap but decent modeling amp like a Roland Cube (15/20w) - you're set.

If you're going to buy one of these - try and get ABH to throw in a setup with the price(this you WILL need to make it play nice at all - a well setup guitar can make a guitar like this play amazing to an extent) - and perhaps a gig bag or if you're pushing your luck - a case.

When it comes to guitars - cheap does not necessarily mean bad. Cheap can still be good - whilst expensive is as the word suggests - it costs a fair amount without guarantee of better quality. Note that I'm not saying all cheap guitars are made equal - and that a Strat Squire will be exactly the same as a MIA Strat. Far from that.

Then there's the Peavey 4x12" cab for more advanced guitarists. These go for about $330 used/second hand - $299 is quite the bargain provided you already have an amp head and would love a decent 4x12 to fool around with. Probs wouldn't be too bad to gig with either. Rear mounted speakers. From what I've heard - these are excellent price to quality/tone wise.

——If you're actually interested in learning guitar, it wouldn't be too bad an idea to pick up a copy of Rocksmith too!

  • Don't know about other stores but only checked Thomann's regular price for the ones OP mentioned:

Epiphone Les Paul Standard 354 Euro excl. shipping
Peavey Valvking 412 Slant 344 Euro excl. shipping

So these are pretty nice deals.

Sometimes I wish ABH's website wasn't so shit and slow.

    • +1

      Why is it so bad?

      • +2

Probably by running their website off some $5-a-month hosting plan? Just a wild guess, though.

That because DJs aren't musicians, they are whankers.
They turn records on. So what? My little brother does that for free.
      DJ's = absolutely nothing.

    Their site barely even loads.

    • The mobile site works decently enough. As a temp fix at least.

If you are considering a guitar, try getting the RockSmith 2014 game as well for PS3 or XBox. Only $59 at the moment at JB.

Or if you want to get the Original RockSmith game (2011/12) as well as the Epiphone Les Paul Jr Guitar for $169 (PS3 and XBox) or $199 (PC - on back order right now)…

I'm one week into learning and it is a lot of fun.

  • Anybody have any experience with the Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus Top Pro? And for this price, which looks to be 450

    • +1

Plus Top Pros are pretty damn nice. Own a couple myself; they play nicely when setup correctly. You get coil tapping (split coils) and the ProBuckers in the LP PTP are much better tone wise than the Alnico Classics in the standard (although it may come down to personal preference).

Personally would buy the PTP alone for the ProBuckers compared to the Alnicos not to mention the top itself.

      • Ah thanks for the reply, so far I only got a shitty $200 combo amp, wondering if you'd have any recommendations on an amp to get to pair it with the pro?

        • +1

Depends what you play really. As a general statement though in regards to tone, these are two quality amps on the cheap:

          • B52 AT112 60w 1x12" ($400-500ish): It's a high gain amp - good for rock/metal/etc and things of the like, also very versatile in terms of genres. Clean channel is very clean - OD channel is very nice too.

          • Jet City JCA2112RC 20w 1x12" ($640ish): Excellent amp. Is essentially a Soldano (has that tone). Clean and dirty channel are both fantastic. Personally reccomend this one much more than the one above.

A Pod HD500/X or a Zoom G5 might be an option if you're playing in tiny spaces where you can't crank the amp and also if you want to try out amp modeling. Amp modeling has come a fair way in the last couple of years.

Finding the amps on the other hand (unless you're buying online) - may prove to be somewhat of a challenge

  • Anyone know when the sale ends? I'd like to go pick up that Epiphone LP on the weekend.

    • Asked them. Sale ends when they run out of stock.

  • A little advice:
Whatever price point, play as many guitars in the shop as you can, but dont plug in, do it acoustically. Be shameless. Get 4-5 out of each model close your eyes and listen! There are significant differences unit to unit. Modern machining methods and CNC mean that they all will be relatively accurately shaped and drilled but wood is wood. Each piece is unique.
