Why does a bit of glass and a bit of plastic cost so much? I don't understand the high cost of lens.

how finely and accurately can you design, grind, and assemble special pieces of glass so 24MP images are tack-sharp?

      it isn't window glass either!

      • I just think of complex electrical components costing a lot less, but I imagine there are great costs in the refining stages.

        • Don't forget R&D costs. An iPhone cost ~$180 to make, but if I gave you $180 you would never be able to design, prototype, and manufacture even a Nokia brick from scratch.

This is an L lens so not made of plastic either…

      • It is.

      Plus R&D costs.

Incidentally, this lens is mostly plastic:

I bought it just last month in Hong Kong for AU$1050, so this is a good price.

      Interesting article on "Pro-grade" lenses:

Because different color have different wave length, and it is difficult to recalibrate all the color to align on the same focal plane.

  • Good Price but I prefer the 100 F2. This one is too heavy (yes I know it is a L lens).

  • Beautiful lens! + Delivery the price just OK.
