    Sydney Blue Gum

Most informative deal title ever (before it was fixed).

What's the bet it has always been this price?

  • "The winner is… Sydeny"

edit: damn, beaten, shoulda clicked on the youtube above…

  • That's a pretty good price, shame you can't spell!

This stuff is regularly $75-80 elsewhere.

    • fixed above, but not on the website

It's engineered hardwood flooring. The title should really reflect this.

Basically it is approx 2 or 3mm of Sydney blue gum layered on a compound hard wood material.

It isn't solid timber flooring, and it isn't laminate.

I have engineered hardwood flooring in our house, although not the same brand as this so take or leave this advice. There are a couple of problems to potentially watch out for which may or may not apply to this particular flooring:

    1) Check the scratch resistance of the coating in store (using a key is not really a good test, find something that is abrasive or sharper). The coating on ours was supposedly "diamond coat scratch resistant" or something similar but the reality is that it scratches very easily given that its quite a brittle coating. A child pushing a plastic toy around that might have a bit of grit under it can easily scratch ours leaving a white scratch, generally it will be less noticeable after a brush with a damp cloth. Heavyish impacts from dropping a bottle or cutlery can also cause the coating to lift in that area (see if you can test this in store).

    2) Water is a major enemy if it is left over the top of a join for any period of time. It will cause the edges to raise a little. Ask in store to apply some water over the top of two joined pieces and see if it has any effect after 20 mins or so. This will also depend on how well the joints are glued when its laid. We wash ours with a damp mop only and wipe up spills immediately, steam cleaners would also do damage I suspect.

    3) Some engineered flooring has radially peeled timber as its top layer (rotary peeling on a lathe to lift the veneer layer), this means the grain can look a little odd compared to solid timber that has gone through a regular saw.

    4) If installing in a new house with a concrete slab, ensure that all moisture is out of the slap with a moisture tester before installing (this can take quite a while apparantly), otherwise it may cause problems with the floating floor.

If I had the chance again, I would have bought the raw uncoated version of our timber flooring and had it coated by a pro once it was laid but that option was considerably more expensive at the time.

    • sound advice mate, thanks for taking the time to post.

  • Boral Silkwood is the same price -> http://www.floorboardsonline.com.au/engineered-flooring/bora…

I have about 100m2 of that from a local place

the solid timber version is much cheaper and better - engineered timber floors only really makes sense if you are limited by floor height (as I was)

solid all the way for new builds!

    • Yeah, the solid timber is much better/nicer, however once you take into account the cost to install, sand and seal I think it works out more expensive (at least that's how I remember it when we built our house about 6 years ago). It would depend on what specials are on at the time though of course.

      • true - I only looked at factory sealed timber flooring

        • Can you get pre-sealed solid timber from Boral? I do think their engineered flooring is better than the flooring we got (ours had a very slightly chamfered edge which doesnt look as good as the Boral stuff.
