I'm pretty sure the hinges on the new genuine smart covers for the air/mini are covered in the same leather material as the case itself, so no metal is actually exposed. It might be worth going on eBay to see if there are any imitations of the new design.
Yes thats right, the genuine smart covers have leather hinges which does NOT scratch the iPad, hence I recommend the genuine one from Apple instead and not to get these 3rd party ones due to poorly designed metal hinges.
Based on the iPad 4 ones, they're really poor quality - the magnet is weak and they just feel cheap.
Go for the PU leather ones on eBay.
The Kogan ones are ok if they are at $9 or so.
Does anyone has links to good eBay seller's of Ipad Air full covers?
Is this the one they sell for $6 before?

This looks exactly the same as the ones sold on ebay for about $10, if so I would advice not to buy it because I bought one and the metal hinges that stick to the iPad causes scratch marks. I now have permanent scratch marks on the side of my iPad and thrown the cover in the bin and bought a genuine iPad smart cover instead.
