Location in title or description please

  • Crikey- the last time I was interested in hifi- the 1980s- early 90s- Martin Logan was ultra high end- $25,000 speakers- stuff like that- electrostatics.

    • Yeah, they started out making ESLs but diversified into regular speakers in the early 2000s. Not sure if this Sub is even a pure Martin Logan product and highly doubt it's made in the USA. Looks like they too have been bought out in recent years anyway (from a Wiki page):
"In October 2005 ML was acquired by a subsidiary of ShoreView Industries. ShoreView is a financial firm that makes investments in companies. ShoreView is a passive investor that is not from the loudspeaker or audio business and is not involved in day to day operations."

I've never been sure what 'Audiophile' actually means but going by MLs history I'm not sure this Sub would be 'Audiophile' grade. Probably still very decent though and a great price nonetheless.

      • +1

Going buy reviews online it seems like a very good unit.

I would probably trade my 12" Velodyne Impact for this one.

        • +2

Yeah cool! It's incredible what some of this easily affordable gear can do… even a lot of the generic Chinese stuff can surprise me but sometimes it's very difficult to get past the branding and/or marketing of a lot of this gear, sometimes you've just got to trust your own ears and go for it.

        • +2

I agree, i used to stick my nose up at those cheap china no brand 5.1 tower speakers until I heard one at my mates place. I was pleasantly suprised, were talking crazy cheap like $400 bucks for big units.

Once you get deeper you can definitly appreciate higher grade gear but yeah… :)

        • +1

Yep, I had a pair of generic Chinese designed & made 'DBDynamics' (think 'White Van') tower speakers I bought 2nd hand in a bundle of other gear for something like $20 a couple of years ago. Didn't really want them so didn't bother even connecting them up until about 6 months later when I was thinking about getting rid of them but was blown away… they were an absolute pleasure to listen to across a very wide range of music and outperformed many of my desirable and fairly valuable vintage speakers I have in my ever growing collection. They were my 'go to' speakers for so long but I was rapidly running out of room so gave them to a friend who was in need. Kinda miss them but I'm sure I could easily get another pair cheaply purely because the brand isn't 'Bose' or whatever ;)

        • echo these guys

martin logan is/was a very high end brand

$199 is a bargain although its not the most powerful deep bass sub out there but should do fine for most smaller rooms

          10kg, 32-45hz

        • +2

From your posts that I've read SteveandBelle I'm kinda wishing I was your friend

        • +3

Ha, careful what you wish for Cornbeef ;)

Hi Rep - Good deal - I want to buy one but the price is still $549 on the site

    • +2

Use the code ozbeard in the coupon code field at checkout to get discount!

      • Ahh thanks - Having one of those days

  • +1

    awwww…. its in NSW….
    :(

    • " or you can have it delivered to metro areas for $30 flat."

  • I'm looking for a sub for my home cinema. 8 inches and only 75w seems a bit smallish. Will need to do some research but I am tempted by this deal.

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/271269577593?ssPageName=STRK:MEWA…
This one is also $499 retail and selling at $199 with free postage. It also happens to be 125w and features a larger 10" cone. Not sure how it compares in terms of quality though.

    • +1

Look up the 'SVS' brand of subs, see if they tickle your fancy in bang-for-buck ratio.

They can certainly tickle the finery in the room next door to wherever you install one! Amazing subs.

To the OP/rep, on the blog it says the competition ends 27th Jan, which was yesterday. Typo, or am I posting from the future? Thanks :D

      • Typo sorry I extended to 1st of Feb

      • Sure, I will have a look at them.
TBH, it is only going to be used in my bedroom but I would probably prefer to buy a larger/more powerful sub so I won't have to upgrade it in a few years when I have my own house and will invariably want bigger speakers.

      • +1 for SVS. I recently picked up their Ultra Bookshelf speakers and the SB12-NSD and am loving them.

  • +4

To the people that have bought… would appreciate some upvotes for this deal.

    • +1

      hi Rep,

can you do anything special on the bigger subs? The 500/700/1000
im looking to use this as part of my 5.1 home theatre, will it suffice?

      • I have concluded this sub is insufficient for my needs due to the weak output, even though it is only $200 I would prefer to get one that is atleast 2x stronger.

        • +5

Eeek, Wolfenator. Tread carefully here as specs don't always give you the whole picture in the world of audio! This Sub may blow your mind but the problem is you really should listen to all audio gear before you buy it… cheap or expensive, you've got to like the way it sounds to really know it's what you need/want and of course that's difficult when buying online.

If you've ever heard what true 75W sounds like you would be absolutely amazed. I have a couple of monoblock A-Class amps capable of around 10-15WRMS each and I can guarantee you'll change your mind about ever believing a power rating ever again after hearing these bad boys. The transformers in their power supplies alone weigh more than a couple of phone books!

        • +3

Yep, good advice. Do not conclude anything from just watts alone. Wolfenator, you mentioned you are after something for a bedroom - I'll go out on a limb and suggest you won't find many better subs (efficiency, hz range, ease to drive without clipping/distorting, especially at higher volumes) for $200.

        • -1

If you've ever heard what true 75W sounds like

Unfortunately this is most likely 75W of Class-D power.

        • +1

It is a sub afterall, Class A is pretty much moot.

I know loads of audiophiles will disagree… but in a blind test, most people if not all could not tell the difference between a A and D for a sub. If you say you can tell the difference, I'd challenge you to do a blind test yourself.

        • All else being equal, for twice the volume you'll need 10x the watts, i.e. 750W RMS.

        • there is NOTHING wrong with a well made class D. They can be every bit as accurate as pure class A, without the weight or heat. Professional poewr amps are just about all class D now as it is just so much better. More complex design, but worth it.

    • I did already, cheers.

  • Bought one - hope it sounds as good as people have been suggesting. In any case it is replacing a no name sub I have had for yrs. Cheers from a bearded man for the 'ozbeard' special price.

  • +1

This is an excellent deal - you won't do better- for Australians. I just looked it up- $129 delivered for Americans. Damn Yankees. Goes much better on music rather than movies according to Whathifi.

    • $214 USD shipped to AU

  • I am thinking of this one as a replacement for my old 10" DSE ported Subwoofer. Which was good for the time but I don't think it cuts compared to todays modern subs being around 10 years old. Don't think I need to go overboard being a smallish room.

It looks good from the product release video from Martin Logan. But what worries me is this is a down firing sub. Would that makes any difference to the sound if this is placed on a carpeted floor? As my current one is front firing and ported.

    • No, not really. As long as there is enough space between the driver and the ground there won't be any difference.

  • +1

    Another thing I didn't need :-)

    • +2

That's the OzBargain spirit! Empty your wallet, fill your house!

    • But it's such a good deal to pass up on… I'm so tempted even though I don't live here in Oz.

  • +6

"is meticulously designed and manufactured to our highest standard" is such an overused cliché. I could say the same about when I take a dump. It's high quality and I make my best effort, even meticulous. Design is unpredictable however.

  • Hi Rep,

Id like to purchase one of these, however im currently not in Australia and will be returning on the 27th feb. Would it be possible to post this to me later if i do order this now? Location : NSW2031

    • +1

      Hi

Please purchase one online with delivery and then put in the order notes and you would like it dispatched from our warehouse on the 28th of Feb or something similar.

  • Having tested out so many subs over the years (I currently have about 18 subs in my house at the moment). Specs do make a difference to a certain extent, sure you can get decent 8" drivers and tune them to put out decent bass or at least tight bass even if not that low or loud. But with only 75 watts of power…. I really doubt how useful it would be in Home theatre unless its for small rooms and you only have satellite speakers or maybe to add into a PC audio system. And possibly to add a bit more bass to music listening.

  • $50 cheaper than Amazon if you pick up.

    • +1

Don't forget to add the cost of the step down transformer.

  • I figured out how to get the Price, thanks.

  • +2

Would this sub be well suited for playing songs by Adelaide based band The Beards?

    • +6

Shouldn't be a problem, but I mustache you not to turn it up too loud

  • Just ordered. Ugh, more crap I didn't need :p

What's the deal with this burn-in thing that I read some reviews talk about? I don't know a lot about home theatre stuff so any info you guys might have would be greatly appreciated.

    • +2

In other words… don't blast it from the get go. Run at it at low volumes for 10 hours and mid levels for another 10 and then let loose.

      • Thanks for that! :) I'll make sure to do that when I get it. I live in an apartment building and my place isn't that big so I won't be going too crazy with the volume.

        • plenty of evidence that burn in takes about 20 seconds, and is generally achieved on anything decent through in factory testing. The rest is a myth

        • I read several reviews on newegg for this product and they were all raving about how good it sounds after a "50 hour burn-in period". Who writes this nonsense?

        • Like I said, I don't know much about this stuff. I'll keep that in mind although I'm not one to turn up the volume real loud anyway. Thanks for the input guys :)

  • hi rep/beardo,

I'm interested in this too, and was looking at soundbars as well. Your store pairs some soundbars up with other
sub woofers, are you able to do a deal on this sub woofer with any soundbars?

    • we actually do not pair them up, they come as a package.

  • +1

Just a heads up - they only allow pick up Mon to Thurs 10:30 - 5pm. No pick up from the store allowed outside those hours or during weekends…

  • Another possibility for those craving a bit more bass is to run two of these at the same time?

  • +1

Looks like it is out of stock.

    • +1

just added some more. Last 10 guys be quick.

      • I think I'm gonna bite the bullet and get one!

  • i am kinda tempted. I have a set of KEF 2005.2 satellites but the subwoofer that came with them recently died.

I have no idea about how to pair speakers with subwoofers and receiver. Anyone have any idea whether this sub would do the job?

  • Hi store rep! Is it ok to pick up from West Ryde store? Or pickup only available at Arndell Park?

    • West Ryde is ok, however please call 1300859905 and press prompt #2 and you will be given instructions on where to pick up from. The warehouse is only 2-3 minutes drive from our West Ryde store.

Please remember guys Paypal is not accepted for pick up orders.

  • I've joined the bandwagon and put thru my order. Can't wait to get some serious quality bass for my stereo(my first professional subwoofer). Thanks for providing this deals OP and look forward to many more in the future.

Can you please let me know your pickup address in Arndell Park, if it is not in the confirmation email ?

  • +1

Could'nt resist the price. Lot of good reviews. I hope it will sound good in a 5x4 room.

  • out of stock :(.
Hi Rep, any chance of getting more in at this price for the Ozbargainers that missed out?

  • Sorry mate. We originally had 20 and then upped it to 35 so yes all gone.

  • Is everyone pleased with their purchases so far?
I picked up mine on Monday from the warehouse and am still in the process of "breaking it in". It adds a real depth and bottom punch to my music but I was less impressed with film soundtracks. Still fiddling with it in regards to volume, room placement, cut-off frequency, etc, which all have a bearing on the quality of the sound.

I connected it via the LFE port(single RCA cable) to my amp's subwoofer input. In the manual is says that the LFE cross-over/cut-off is handled solely by the "processor"(aka amp) and that it should be turned up to 100%. Although it definitely sounds noticeably different when I adjust the LFE switch and I have found a sweet-spot around 75% of the rotary which seems to give more accentuated 'popping' bass and less arbitrary grumble.

It definitely makes a stylish addition to my bedroom furniture in a sleek matte black wood finish and is a piece I can enjoy for years, both for listening to and being aesthetically pleasing.

A word of caution : be careful when moving the sub around. Hold the sides of the unit and lift, not the bottom, because this is where the woofer is located and you don't want to accidentally puncture or damage it with your finger's pressure.

Should I fill out the warranty card online(it says that it will extend the warranty to 5 years with ML)?

    • Hi Wolfenator. Glad you're happy with your new Sub but just keep in mind that SubWoofers should never really be 'heard' as such, they should only ever be used to 'enhance'. If you can hear a Sub then you need to pull the level down so it just disappears. Room placement is also a great way of tuning your system however it sounds as though you may be pushed for space in your bedroom ;) All good though with more tweaking and more use I'm sure you'll get it sounding great.

      • Definitely "pushed for space", that is an ongoing problem of mine.
Damn Ozbargain + hoarding mentality + collecting hobby in a small room is a bit of a challenge. But my room is really decked out now with 40" TV, full surround sound system + amp + sub, computer, xbox360, etc.
I found the thickest/highest quality RCA(coaxial) AV cable that I could find to plug it into my subwoofer but it only gives me about 2 metres length so I will need to buy a longer lead or get an extension before I can start moving my sub around.

I listen to lots of classic rock(Queen, Foreigner, etc) so I mainly hear the kick drum through the sub. Sometimes you get some bass guitar through the sub but it depends on the type of song and the frequency range but this is usually passed through my woofers because it is sub-bass frequency. Modern metal bands such as Korn or anything with drop tuning gets heaps of glorious bass growl and low end movement.
Anything synthesized or new wave era with lots of bass sounds amazing and really makes the sub kick e.g. Prince, Thompson Twins.
Haven't really listened to much rap or dance music(not my styles) but it definitely kicks the crap out of this music too.
Movies are very dependent on the film's soundtracks. Obviously it will start kicking in the action scenes(especially explosions, chopper effects and gunfire) but in most of the dialogue scenes it is just sitting idle and running watts so I would be selective with the type of movie I engage the subwoofer/sound system for. If it's a "talkie" kind of film then I will just listen through the TV speakers as it doesn't really need all the extra HiFi sound enhancements(and saves your power bill a bit too).
I think that my subwoofer usage is about 80% music, 20% movies.
