Then show me a place where u can get a quality frypan for $5/$6/$10

        • +7

I'm pretty sure we can figure out what size we need, no need to tell us that a small pan may be too small if we want a small pan.

        • -2

I happen to think the down votes are a bit harsh, but my favourite pan is a 26cm and there are 2 in my household.

Mind you, I also think Teflon coated pans are both unnecessary and poisonous, and aluminium ones don't go well with my induction cooktop. Cue the downvotes:

      That's what she said

  • Sweet thanks op.

  • +2

If Tefal is not a good brand, can I ask which ones are? Just curiosity

    • SKK and WOLL are the best nonstick cookware - they can handle high heat up to 250-300c :)

      • what about stone

        • sorry, no idea - i don't use stone :(

        • +1

I have a StoneDine from HN ($39) just the most amazing frypan I have ever used. my 13 year old was so proud of the omelet she finally made instead of scrambled eggs. You CAN clean it in cold water - no detergent, cook with no oil, nothing sticks. (I have been told I sound like a TV add when posting this on social media) But wait, there's more…………

    • +1

Oops sorry, i didn't mean it that way, Sorry for the confusion Josepet, just meant it in a way that it may not be the Rolls Royce of Frypans to some people.

But you can't compare a $100+ stone pan, etc to a Tefal which is $5.00 =D

The comment was just meant to be for those who don't like to compare apples with apples especially when the prices they compare are worlds apart =]

  • Good size for a quick fried egg or two in the morning. Thanks OP.

  • wow good find thanks OP.Didn't know IGA even sold Tefal brand let alone fry pans. Most supermarkets sell fry pans but poor quality. Does it say which IGA, any one know any in particular within Sydney. This is good I was looking for a new fry pan and grill pan as well

  • +1

damn.. why did i spend lots of time comparing the previous tefal deals of bigw and target…. !!

  • OP would you mind sharing what store that is for?

I have searched for my nearest Ritchies IGA (north ryde) and their latest catalogue doesnt have it.

    is something wrong with them?
It's like all the shops are trying to get rid of it before the bad news gets out.

    • Nothing wrong with them.
Tefal like other brands including very expensive ones (i.e. Swiss Diamond, or even scanpan) use Teflon for non stickiness.
Teflon is trademark, there is a lot of misinformation out there about using Teflon.
For example, "Canaries die when toxic fumes from teflon….,"

There is little truth behind this, teflon does become carcinogenic, but only when you heat the buggery out of it.
If you heat up your nonstick pans too high, well, then the "teflon" breaks down.
So the way to cook with these pans, (and by the way like any other pan), is to to moderate the heat.
The pans are good, use them correctly, thats all.

Non stick pans (all of them), require that you dont heat them up to buggery.

(Tefal have the red dot - warns you (good thing) if you are gettting hot)

      • +2

While I do conform to the rule that "the poison is in the dose", Teflon is a poison, and the canaries do die if you leave an empty Teflon pan on the stove in a closed kitchen with one. PFOA is also a known carcinogen, and is used in the making of Teflon.

I would say that those too lazy to learn to cook with an iron or stainless steel pan are probably also too lazy to cook at home enough to have to worry about Teflon poisoning (just having a dig ;) Actually if they leave pans on the stove empty and the phone rings, then yes they may need to. Also I can testify to my Circulon pans having damage to the Teflon despite all care being taken by myself. Where is this Teflon going then? Most likely in my food. Is it doing me harm? Who knows?

Anyone who wants to know more can read a great book called "Slow death by rubber duck", it's well written and referenced.

      • "Heat the buggery out of it" is described a little better here…

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polytetrafluoroethylene

The pyrolysis of PTFE is detectable at 200 °C (392 °F), and it evolves several fluorocarbon gases[23] and a sublimate. An animal study conducted in 1955 concluded that it is unlikely that these products would be generated in amounts significant to health at temperatures below 250 °C (482 °F).[24] More recently, however, a study documented birds having been killed by these decomposition products at 202 °C (396 °F), with unconfirmed reports of bird deaths as a result of non-stick cookware heated to as little as 163 °C (325 °F).[23][25]
While PTFE is stable and nontoxic at lower temperatures, it begins to deteriorate after the temperature of cookware reaches about 260 °C (500 °F), and decomposes above 350 °C (662 °F).[26] These degradation by-products can be lethal to birds, and can cause flu-like symptoms in humans.[26] In May, 2003, the environmental research and advocacy organization Environmental Working Group filed a 14-page brief with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission petitioning for a rule requiring that cookware and heated appliances bearing non-stick coatings carry a label warning of hazards to people and to birds.[27]
Meat is usually fried between 204 and 232 °C (399 and 450 °F), and most oils will start to smoke before a temperature of 260 °C (500 °F) is reached, but there are at least two cooking oils (refined safflower oil and avocado oil) that have a higher smoke point than 260 °C (500 °F). Empty cookware can also exceed this temperature upon heating.

        • 1955… I wonder if anything has changed in the past 59 years.

      • Non stick pans (all of them), require that you dont heat them up to buggery.

  • Both some Tefal pans in my local IGA last year. Best gifts to aunty and in-laws. Like the red dot. Very good quality - not the same as Ikeas. Personally I can't tell the difference between a Tefal and Scanpan. My fried eggs still taste so good.

  • I can't see any Tefal frypans in my local catalogues. Are they only in selected stores.

Are those store located only in NSW?

  • I really really hope there isn't a TYPO in this special like there was in the recent REPCO catalogue :P

But just remember Ozbargainers, if you get in nice and early i guess you will score one…hopefully.
    Enjoy

Or go in there today and hide one somewhere in the store (behind expensive toilet paper or cereal that's not on special). Then come back at your leisure some time tomorrow and snare your pan - provided that it hasn't been discovered.

  • +3

Anyone know if this offer is available in Melbourne at all?

    • I wanna know too. Couldn't find anything in their recent catalogues… :|

    • OP listed Broadmeadows which is in Melbourne, however I live near here and this particular IGA is located in a pretty dodgy area (actually the dodgiest part of Broady!), I personally don't feel safe going here alone during daylight!

      • OP listed Broadmeadow, which is in NSW, not Broadmeadows in Vic.
Its a shame, as I am in Vic and would be picking some of these up if they were available.

There are non-dodgy parts in Broadmeadows!?!?!

    • only NSW stores - see my comment above

Correct me if I am wrong, I think these pans are not induction compatible.

For people who uses induction cooktops at home, be aware of this. :)

    • Aluminium is not compatible, and I have never seen a branded stainless steel/copper/iron pan for this price, so I second your comment. (could have just hit plus I guess…)

    • +1

Just take a magnet to the shop. Iff it sticks to the base, it is induction-compatible.

  • +1

I have a tefal stainless fry pan made for induction but it has an added base.

Had the pan for about 7 years and still non stick.

    Ill definitely buy another tefal.

  • Can I suggest the Korean Marble coating frying pans from ebay. They cost around 30 bucks, and you dont even need oil to cook in it.

    • "Marble Coat" is just another brand name for a PTFE/teflon nonstick coating, like "Silverstone" "Stonedine" "Flavorstone" etc .

      • no its not. they are all maid from PTFE yes that is correct, but theres different types with marble or cermaic mixed in, which are supposedly a lot stronger then the normal teflon, and withstand a lot higher temperatures.

      • The StoneDine I bought from H N (for $39) is the most amazing frypan I have ever used. And the label in front of me says "No PTFE No PFOA" whatever they are. Materials are stainless steel and aluminium so it can be used for induction. I read elsewhere it is a type of resin, on resin on resin. Not sure about it though.

  • +1

Love my 20cm fry pan - I cook eggs, back and everything else on it at the same time and combines the flavours well. Also helps you eat smaller portions.

  • +3

Not all Tefal is created equal, be warned.

The Tefal IGA sells is Chinese made not French, check the labels.

    • I have one Tefal which made in France, it is a very good fry pan.

    • confirmed
      made in china stock

not clearly visible like the made in France stock

      • yeh correct. And the quality is not that great.

  • +7

with prices this cheap I bet there will be lines at the front of the store before it opens.
And, just like the boxing day sales of old, when the doors open and the crowds surge in there will be………………..pandemonium.

  • Plenty at crows nest iga on willoughby road

    • Only a couple of boxes of each size left now! One guy came in and bought 2 boxes of the square ones.

These are the Chinese made frypans.

      • none of the 26cm frypan left

  • Looks like they're only at "Ritchie's" SUPA IGA store. Shame, really wanted to get a few for some quick frying.

  • Went this morning, lots left at IGA North Ryde, they still had like 10 boxes.

    • +1

All gone except for the 20cm pans. The staff were really pissed off and annoyed at the people who came in the morning and bought like 6-7 of each type of pan. They were saying how selfish of those people and now everyone else misses out including some of the staff who were also keen on getting some.

I do have to concur, i can imagine buying maybe 2 of each type to give to family members etc, but 6+ of each type? No way you will use all that at the same time. I imagine these people will be reselling them….

I am disappointed as i did want to get the larger pans.

Oh I forgot to mention they have now restricted it to one pan per customer but i guess too late for all the other sizes except for the 20cm.

      • Wow really? I'm surprised they're almost all out since they had at least a trolley full of boxes when I left.

When I was there some of the staff had actually taken some. I know one of the ladies at the register called out to one of the staff who walked passed to grab her some of them (she mustn't have known there was more stock at the back). I would have thought all of the staff would have taken what they wanted by now.

I thought they'd only have like a few boxes or no stock (bait advertising or they hide the stock) so we went really early just to check. We bought mainly the grillpans for friends and family since the others were a bit small and I'm not sure how good there are since I saw they were from China. So they only have the 20cm left? I didn't get any of the smaller ones, but one lady wanted two of the 20cm ones but they scanned at like $20 when they first opened and she left before they put up the pamphlet and fixed the price, so she missed out as well.

I’d imagine some people would have bought them in boxes like Tiger mentioned since they didn’t have a limit and they are pretty cheap.

It’s a shame you couldn’t get what you wanted, when did you get there?

        • I got there at 12pm, thinking i had plenty of time as it wouldnt be that busy a location but i hadnt counted for people taking heaps at a time i guess.

I should have gone in the morning like you, that, in hindsight, would have been the smart thing to do. The 20cm will do for some stuff, but yeah it is quite tiny.

        • Considering how much stock there was when I left I thought there would still be stock tonight. I just didn't know what to expect before I got there since I hadn’t been to the IGA in North Ryde so I went in the morning, and I wouldn’t have had time during the day. I think it’s always better to go early, you never know how much stock they have. I was hoping they had other sizes as well.

We already have a small frypan so we don’t need another one and no one I knew wanted one. I guess it’s not too bad if you’re just cooking enough for yourself and small things like eggs.

You could probably try calling up the other stores to check their for stock but I’m not sure if it's worth the trouble.

  • Does anyone know which store is meant by Broadmeadow? I wasn't aware of there being a store in Broadmeadow. I'm assuming this means Richies at New Lambton?

    • Anyone been there today and know what the stock levels were like?

  • Just checked Ritchies website, there is a store at Broadmeadow - http://www.ritchies.com.au/location/broadmeadow.
Address: 12 Ailsa Road, Broadmeadow NSW, 2292. I saw Broadmeadow on the back of the tefal pamphlet as well.
