Almond milk (soy and carageenan free)?

Hi
Has anyone come across Almond milk that is high in calcium in Australia and is free from Soy and Carageenan?

At the moment I'm heading this petition (http://www.thepetitionsite.com/368/745/326/bring-silk-almond…) in an attempt to bring Silk Almond Milk (http://silk.com/products) to all states of Australia. My son (who is now 5) was born with a dairy allergy and had his first anaphylactic episode at 7 months of age. When living in LA for a year, we fell in love with the Almond milk there made by Silk. We love this brand because its tastes sooo good and it's one of the few brands that contain NO Carageenan. In fact, US has a huge range of dairy free foods, we were so happy we could eat dairy free cheese pizzas on a regular basis! I wish Australia had the same range of dairy free foods. But I will be overjoyed if I could get just the Silk Almond Milk here.

Why Silk Almond Milk? Because it doesnt contain Soy or Carageenan. I've read about the long term detrimental effects of soy milk, some of which include:
*Endocrine disruption;
*digestive problems;
*adverse effects on thyroid, fertility, hormones, sex drive, digestion; and
*even its potential to contribute to certain cancers.
And have also read about the negatives of Carageenan, some of which are:
*destruction to the digestive system; and
*gastrointestinal disease in lab animals, including ulcerative colitis, intestinal lesions, and colon cancer.
If you tasted the Almond milk by Silk I assure you, you will love it too. Not only does it taste good (all flavors including original, vanilla and chocolate), but it contains 50% more calcium than that of cow's milk, which my son is lacking as a result of his dairy allergy. At the moment he relies on drinking soy milk a few times a week and calcium supplements. It's not so exciting as drinking the Silk Almond milk believe me.

I would truly appreciate your help in signing my petition and lets hope Silk Almond Milk range will arrive in Australia in the VERY near future so all of us can enjoy the taste and its benefits.

Best regards to all
Angela

if you're that concerned about soy milk and carageenan, you could always make your own almond milk. I hear it's pretty easy

    • Yep I do it. It's easy, tasty and fresh!

  • Forgive my naive question, but are those 'detrimental effects' of soy milk also applicable to all soy products like tofu etc?

Or it is just unique to soy milk?

The unfermented soy category is a most problematic one. It includes soy products, such as tofu, bean curd, all soy milks, soy infant formulae, soy protein powders and soy meat alternatives, such as soy sausages/veggie burgers, made from hydrolysed soy powder.

Doesn't impact me whatsoever but I hope my signature helps out!

  • carageenan

I thought carrageenan was some kind of Irish ingredient until I looked it up. :) Well it does come from an Irish word. Learn something everyday.

I've recently started making my own and it's dead easy. Soak a cup of raw almonds in water overnight; drain the water. Add 2 or 3 cups of water (depending on how thick you want it) and blend for a few minutes. Then run it through a strainer. I sometimes add a couple of medjool dates before blending to add some natural sweetness. It's more nutritious and cheaper too!

Totally second this! Quick, easy..and you know exactly what you are putting in your milk

    • did a batch this morning :) and you get almond meal with the rest (don't throw it away!)

I heard adding salt when you soak them breaks down the enzymes or something..but just rinse them and add fresh water.

Try adding a little vanilla and cinnamon… people say it tastes like egg nog? I haven't had that before but this tastes great! :)

  • Thanks for all the tips. For those who make their own almond milk, do you know how much calcium is in 1 cup/serving?

Silk almond milk provide 45% of RDI for calcium. It is also non-GMO verified +++. INGREDIENTS: Almondmilk (Filtered Water, Almonds), Cane Sugar, Sea Salt, Locust Bean Gum, Sunflower Lecithin, Gellan Gum.

VITAMINS & MINERALS: Calcium Carbonate, Vitamin E Acetate, Zinc Gluconate, Vitamin A Palmitate, Riboflavin (B2), Vitamin B12, Vitamin D2.

Thank you all for signing the petition. It would be nice to have it locally. I've never ordered from Vitacost and not sure what customs would do with it.

Has anyone come across Almond milk that is high in calcium in Australia and is free from Soy and Carageenan?

Australian Pureharvest Organic Almond Milk is the purest with 11% activated almonds but isn't calcium fortified

However, I don't know about Woolworths Macro Organic Flavoured Milk Almond

Did you alternatively consider rice milk?
    http://www.soy.com.au/products/ricemilk

    • It's notable that the Australian Pureharvest product proudly declares its 11% almond content, whereas the US Silk product does not appear to state a figure for its almond content. Also, that Pureharvest Organic Almond Milk has no added sugar, whereas the Silk almond milk IS sweetened with sugar, coyly described as, "all natural evaporated cane juice".

Apart from create this petition what efforts have you gone through to get this?

    Did you ask woolworths?
Did you ask a food distributor?
Did you enquire into importing it yourself?

I've done all these with success. I even asked someone on eBay to buy me a product and send it to me and of course guaranteed that if customs denied it that I would take that loss.

I've only directly emailed the company and their reply was that they're not at the exporting stage yet.

I haven't asked woolworths or coles. I just feel my request would fall on deaf ears. But you are right there is no harm asking. Who would be the best person to speak to? Store manager?

      • Deaf ears is better than no ears.

The best person is Woolworths, ask them which department to refer it too.

If at first you don't succeed try and try again. Use your initiative and just go for it, don't be scared of failure they worst they can do is say no.

        • Ok thanks for the encouragement :) I'll give it a go. Fingers crossed there'll be a break through.

email head office. don't mess around with store managers

        • Penrith store manager actually did wonders at stocking a few things on request.

      • coles' wholesale/import business is grocery holdings - sorry but can't remember woolworths'

        smaller importers/distributors might be better

perhaps ask http://www.pureingredient.com.au who chose soyana due to it being the most pure and natural soy with 18% whole beans and calcium fortified with algae not limestone

do you know the almond content of silk?

i'm guessing that it's probably low, like the other popular almond drink in the usa, almond breeze, with just 2% whole almonds, and nowhere close to pureharvest's 11%
        http://www.almondbreeze.com.au/?navid=334

also note that there's good and bad carageenan
        http://www.soyana.ch/index.php?page=23

again, if concerned about soy, then consider rice as well as almond drinks :)

    • Strange. I hated that but yet I felt the need to repeat it a few times

  • How about Almond Breeze Almond Milk? I've seen it at Costco in Australia.

  • what's wrong with soy?

The Chinese have been drinking it for hundreds of years..

  • Surely Soy is still better than processed meats.

  • Hey Angela,

I recently started supplying silk soy milk to cafe's in Australia.

Give me a call to discuss.
