Anti-soy marketing really works when on each OZB soy related thread another pundit pops up to spread some health related link. The irony is that when hormone loaded chicken deals pop up, everyone turns a blind eye.. chicken's delicious right?

      Getting a bit stale.

      • +9

Actually if you bothered to read the link from JVs post you would see that they basically say there is no medical evidence that having soy is a health risk

      • "Hormone loaded chickens".

It has been several years since it was legal to use hormones in chickens in Australia.

Can girls make their boobs bigger?

  • Also read.

There is one interesting case report of a 60-year-old man who developed big ol' hooters and presented to a gland clinic for an answer. His gynecomastia eventually went away when they discovered he was drinking 3/4 of a GALLON of soy milk A DAY and told him to cut it out. With all the millions of people who ingest soy daily (there are countries where soy is a staple of the "normal" diet) the fact that there is one case report of one guy whose breast tissue was sensitive to soy products is reassuring to me.

Ok. There was only ONE case and that wasn't even a scientific study showing the effects of isoflavones on male boob (moob) development. Until then, you guys can continue having your soymilk guzzling party.

This soy milk has added canola oil to modify its viscosity. It is listed in the ingredient. Canola oil is used as a medium to fried something, and you won't won't ever thought to drink it straight, will you?

IMHO, it's better to drink soy milk bought from asian groceries, as it contain pure soy milk.

    • it's better to drink soy milk bought from asian groceries

      that's a bit racist isn't it?

our local grocery store is run by a Lebanese family and they have great soy milk… I don't see how the nationality of the store owner impacts the quality of the soy milk…

      • +2

Are you nuts? Note it's groceries not grocer.

        • -2

No, I think the Nut stall at the shopping centre is run by a Polish lady.

        • I like big nuts, and I can not lie.

transformers, more than meet the eye

      • technically, lebanese are asians, so are indians.

    • Canola oil is used as a medium to fried something, and you won't won't ever thought to drink it straight, will you?

Interesting reasoning, somehow to you canola oil is ok if in fried food but no no if raw. So you don't put olive oil dressing on your salads but you will consume it if used to fry?

      • Canola used to be called rape.

        • +1

          Rapeseed to be precise.

        • in america - rapeseed.
          in australia -rape

source : family farming from mid 1840's

        • And in fact rapeseed is from the Latin for turnip, but rape is allied to words like rapture and rapt with the root meaning of to seize.

It's best to buy a soymilk machine and crush your own in the morning. They go for about $100.

      • +7

now it's time to get a deal on OzBargain for a good soymilk machine……

    • IMHO, it's better to drink soy milk bought from asian groceries, as it contain pure soy milk.

what do you mean by pure soy milk? 100% soy beans?

So Good has 3.5% soy protein.
I -think- the one I normally buy has 13% protein..
I'd rather pay full price for that, than 99c for this.

  • Good price. I'm happy with Aldi and Coles branded lite soy milks. S they are just over $1 per litre but at 99c I think I'm going to need to stock up.
What fuel deals do woollies have at the moment?

  • Why are people anti soy? What the hell am I gonna drink if there's no soy I'm dairy intolerant.. Full dairy not just lactose.. Anti soy people are idiots..great price btw op

    • Scientific fact - Soy milk causes communism!!!!

      • +2

Pity more people don't have it then - it would create a more equal society if they did.

    • There's always rice milk, almond milk and oat milk. I prefer the latter.

      • +6

        Not for 99c a litre there isn't.

      • Oat milk tastes grainy and almond milk, which I just had for the first time, tastes like super watered down dairy milk. Whatever floats your boat I guess

        • You'd think almond milk would taste like almonds considering it's ground almonds mixed with water. (Not that the exorbitant prices many health food shops charge for it would make you think so though lol)

    • Beer :)

      "Anti soy people are idiots"

Ran out of negs here. Back tomorrow…

  • +2

Great just recently ran out of the 30 litres I bought from the last Coles sale :)

    • So I should buy 31L until the next sale? :)

      • Yep get the few cartons as you so wish. People pay more for mineral water which has insufficient calcium. I'm down to my last boxes w/expiry 14-JAN14.
Comes to about 33.86 after Visa payWave DC * 36L. And should these hit OOS then I'll take out a rain check to collect at my convenience.

  • I really despise the taste of this stuff but my wife likes it so I appreciate the good deal.

I don't understand how they can get away with calling it soy "milk". It's not Mod: Foul Language "milk", it's grounds up soy beans, water, canola oil, emulsifiers, coloring, and who knows what else.

    • +6

Get over it, milk is a generic term these days for anything milky looking, like coconut milk, and even non-edible liquids like milk of magnesia.

PS: Didn't neg you, it's no big deal to me if you want to spend energy disliking soy milk.

    • Maybe the problem is when people read "milk" they think of "cow milk". I have yet to find a milk product that specifically mentions on the front label in large print that it comes from a cow. It's wrong to assume that "milk" is automatically of bovine origin.

      • +1

definitely. I think "milk" derived from animals (including humans -let's not be specie-est) should be only referred to as "lactation juice".

eg - "I'll have a double decaf with low fat lactation juice"

      • +1

I've yet to purchase a product thinking it was cows milk only to find out that it was something different afterwards.

        • Are you sure there is no horse milk in there?

  • Now if only my car could be modified to run on soy milk…

  • +2

if one is serious about soy then the only brands to drink are:

    • soyana - 18% organic whole soy beans
    • vitasoy - 17% organic whole soy beans
    • macro - 14% organic whole soy beans

so good has no soy beans - instead only 3.5% soy protein :(

    • +1

      ta for those recommendations.

Aldi Organic soy is 14% organic soy beans for $2.
      (no preservatives, all organic ingredients)

forget So Good.. it's the packaging and advertising that makes people want it, not logic or the ingredients.

      • It's likely that some brands report the proportion of soy protein while others report the proportion of soy beans hence the seeming discrepancy.

        • yeah, to compare like-for-like, Homebrand has 13% soy protein, for usual price of $1.20. A lot better than 3.5% so good, for 99c.. even if you do have to get used to the homebrand 'flavour'.

        • You sure that's not 13% soy beans? Rather generous for a house brand.

        • sorry but no - so good has no whole soy beans

it would definitely state if otherwise, especially from a marketing perspective :)

        • Sorry to disappoint you but none of them have whole soy beans, they're all ground up. Question is whether they are reporting the proportion of soy beans that go into the mix or the resulting protein. Soy milk is normally 3.5% protein similar to cow milk so it's not like So Good is trying to short change you of protein.

        • oops.. says 13% soy bean on homebrand.
          says it's 2.7grams protein per 100ml

has preservatives etc so I'll stick with more organic/simple products

        • +1

(that diy soymilk maker idea is starting to sound sexy)

        • Sorry to disappoint you but none of them have whole soy beans, they're all ground up.

          obviously

Question is whether they are reporting the proportion of soy beans that go into the mix or the resulting protein.

soy beans are more than just protein :)

        • Sure, that's why I buy the ones that I like the taste of, and others should do the same instead of worrying about a few grams of protein. Hardly anybody here suffers from protein deficiency so why be miserable for that.

        • the issue is not protein but soy beans :)

          which ones do you buy?

        • So Good or Aldi. I tried the others and didn't like the taste. Bear in mind that claims of "organic" are sometimes dubious.

      • what's aldi's ingredients?

soyana has no added sugar, unlike vitasoy and macro

unlike soyana, macro, and the original organic vitasoy (no longer available), vitasoy has pearl barley, barley malt, sunflower oil, so isn't gluten-free :(

        • aldi = filtered water, organic soy beans 14%, organic rice syrup, organic sunflower oil, sea salt.
          says it's 2.5grams protein per 100ml

          allergen advice CONTAINS SOY (lol)

        • so no added sugar? interesting…

as most others have added sugar, some find those without not sweet enough

    • If you are real serious, buy a soymilk machine and crush your own. Easily the best for you.

  • OK I WAS MISTAKEN.
    re: my previous posts.

So Good says 3.2grams protein per 100ml
    Homebrand/Aldi are only 2.7/2.5grams per 100ml.

Still, I won't buy So Good, because I prefer simple/organic ingredients.

    • +1

So Good says 3.2grams protein per 100ml
      Homebrand/Aldi are only 2.7/2.5grams per 100ml.

      soyana 3.5g, vitasoy 3.3g, macro 3.1g

      I prefer simple/organic ingredients.

      +1 :)

  • Anything except Vitasoy tastes like a side of arse. No way would I drink this stuff. I will way the ice cream though.

    • You tasted a side of arse?

  • enough said, i'll buy the whole pallet..going to grow my own boobs
