COTD… so delivered in time for Autumn?

    • haha yeah, sounds about right, problems with the product? good luck getting in touch with someone at COTD!!

  • +8

    Little noisy..

    Little understated.

There's no way you're sleeping in same room with one of these. I have a 3.5KW Dimplex in a spare bedroom that offers you the choice of sleeping or sauna, but not both.
It is probably as loud as my 8.5KW Panasonic's external, condenser fan which is rated at 70dB maximum volume, and that's not an exaggeration.

Also, AUX is shit. If you want a lasting solution that would be comparable to a split system, the double-ducted DeLonghi portables are the only real choice (one duct for intake, one for exhaust; hence no radiating heat back into the room through the non-sealed plastic housing like most portables).

Everything else should at best be considered temporary solutions until you can manage to install a split system or stop renting.

Cheap portable A/C's have more leaks than the Iraqi Navy (and need regular emptying of water valves), clog up their filters like nobody's business and just cannot cope with humidity (even with "dehumidifier" functions).

    • +4

Agree, loud as shit, good luck sleeping, may as well head to the mechanic and sleep next to their air compressor

    • +10

I have a dimplex 3.5KW unit, and I sleep perfectly fine with it running. I suppose I may be a minority, in that I can't sleep in silence as I have tinnitus.

It seems most people like to dump on these portable units. Sadly, most of the dumping comes from people who have other choices in how they cool their rooms. Some people have no choice, and the choice between a bit of noise, and getting no sleep is a no brainer really.

      • -1

It seems most people like to dump on these portable units.

And conversely the portable aircon cheer squad is always on hand to heap undue praise on these things; so what's the issue? It's a fair fight, we're getting both sides of the fence here. You're dreaming if you think people should just overlook the glaring problems with these things and recommend them wholeheartedly to absolutely everyone.

Unless there is absolutely no other choice and you live in an area with absolutely sweltering summers and a very poorly ventilated house or you drop over a thousand on a double-ducted portable, portable A/C is just rubbish.

I suppose I may be a minority, in that I can't sleep in silence as I have tinnitus.

        I rest my case.

They are noisier than all but the largest split systems or commercial-grade ducted A/C systems. Period.

Some people have no choice, and the choice between a bit of noise, and getting no sleep is a no brainer really.

I've given sleeping near one of these things a shot more than once (even with extra large earplugs rammed as far into my ear canal as possible); and unless I've knocked back about 5 shots of Vodka, it's not happening.

So my criticism is borne of legitimate personal experience. You directed your reply to me as if I'm just talking out of my ass, which I take issue with and more to the point you just undercut your whole defense of these things by saying that you can't sleep in silence, hence why you're able to tolerate your Dimplex unit.

          the portable aircon cheer squad

AKA "pragmatists". As previously noted on OzB ad nauseam, not everybody has an alternative!

*** I have no idea how to quote on this site. ***
—"that offers you the choice of sleeping or sauna, but not both."—

      Wait?? whut??

If youre sleeping, youre cool I assume. So its noise cant be keeping you awake.
If its sauna, you wont be sleeping (harder to do) but not noisy as its off.

But sauna or sleeping but not both makes no sense. I assume you meant comfort/cool or sleep but not both.

      DAMNIT, how do you quote????

      • DAMNIT, how do you quote????

Just use a ">" symbol before the quoted text…

      • "that offers you the choice of sleeping or sauna, but not both."

You're right, the "but not both" part was superfluous. I was in a rush.

        • -1

I hate to be pedantic, …wait, no I dont …I love being pedantic

But it still makes no sense. Sleeping and sauna makes sense. Awake and cool or awake but cool makes sense. Sleeping OR sauna does not.

I have a similar one, Coolway, from Big W and sleep perfectly fine with it on. Portable aircons obviously aren't anywhere near as good the "real" thing, but when it is 40+ degrees they are a life saver for rooms without it.

      • +4

Agreed. I'm using a relatively loud Heller Gutsy10CO 10000btu portable AC that we bought from Bunnings in 2009. It was 42'C here in Melbourne today, and right now at 10 pm it's 32'C outside. My rental unit bedroom room is a comfortable 23'C in comparison. Even though there are some small gaps and leaks around the window (window swings open out wards) it's managing to keep the Temp great for sleeping with the aid of a $30 Coles pedestal fan. And the noise really doesn't bother us when the room is so cool.

Thanks to kwaker for the thermal blanket tips here, used it to seal around the window and pipe fitting. Will be putting up more of it tomorrow for better heat management for the room.

    • Where do you get a good price on a DeLonghi portable?

    • +1

Not too bad a price, but I have one that looks pretty much the same and yes, they are noisy. Cools ok if the air is blowing directly at you, but not really that great at cooling the room. Given that they exhaust the hot air by sucking in the cool air from the room and blowing it out the window, the whole system design is not really very efficient. Didn't know DeLonghi has double ducted version, but have to agree that's a good way to go for a portable.

  • +3

Noise is a small price to pay for coolness, you can buy earplugs from the supermarket for $2 a pop and you can easily sleep with them in… I do 2-3 times a week :)

    • This, ive had literally 2 hours of sleep. I got some old POS air con that blows hot air out the back of it so its basically a cool fand that I have to aim at me. Its so loud but I just put on some enya and dream of cool rainforrests to help me sleep (at least try to).

    • Like I said above, even with earplugs it's a challenge. As least with the 3.5KW Dimplex I own.

      • -1

…therein lies the problem, you are basing your entire argument on your own experience with a single unit. I have seen several portables that are sub-50dB in normal operation.

Honestly Amar, without trying to be mean, it just sounds like you need to harden up a bit mate! ;)

  • Noise things , and 3400 watt , mmm how do you get 3400 watts from single phase 10 amp outlet , strange that , sounds like false claim .

    • I clicked on the deal just to warn you guys, if it is 2400w+ then it uses an industrial power cord, so be careful

      eg this http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f6/56C520_01…

edit: might be wise to put a warning on the description

    • +1

Incorrect, It is a heat pump.
It doesnt need to use 3400w to do 3400w (effectively) of cooling.
It uses energy to move the heat from inside to outside.

  • +2

It uses 1600w max. That is the quoted equavalent output. You need to read up on how air conditioner work and how they are much more efficient (look at heat pumps). A standard residential powerpoint is rated at 2400w or 10a max.
Who uses 3 phase power at home, which is what your picture is of? You wouldn't be using these units in a factory.

Here are the spec for the 4000w unit.
    Technical Specifications (AM-H14A4/SR1):

    Rated Capacity -
        Cooling: 4000W
    Rated Power Consumption -
        Cooling: 1480W

    Max. Input Power: 1600W
    Max. Input Current: 6.96A

My son bought one of the Kogan 3.2kw units.
Says it is noisy and doesn't cool that well except straight in front of the unit. It is only 3 weeks old and has developed a bearing noise. Now that is noisy! Being used in a bedroom and is vented properly.

  • Anyone seen a double-ducted DeLonghi available in Australia?

  • I have a NoboCool 5kw unit listed on Ebay ending tomorrow. Only selling as I have split Systems now.
Yes a 5kw unit can be a little noisy, but when it is 45degrees outside, I would rather be cool than quiet.
Cotd are a pain in the bottom to deal with though, and I would be looking elsewhere.

  • As some feedback for this deal - my 4000kW unit was delivered mid last week and today (in Melbourne) certainly warranted a test run.

I would say that I am actually pleasantly surprised at how quiet this unit is. Having previously been using only fans there isn't that much difference and I will have no problems sleeping with this running.

Currently I have it going in my home office with the fan on low speed and it's cooling very nicely indeed.

So delivery time was < 2 weeks which is good for COTD and the unit itself seems decent, certainly for the price paid.
