I was using this until it recently killed all DLNA functions from my rig (Plex) No matter what I did it would not work until I disabled the security.

    • Thanks. I reply on PLEX and could not do much with it.

      Regards
      Daniel

Apparently John Doesus with email address [email protected] hasn't used AVG before. Fantastic.

    • +21

Daryl Somers may not appreciate that.

  • I followed the instruction, but only offered 1 month free trial.. I think it depends on your country, I picked Australia..

    • Apparently a lot of people have got that (me included) - they recommend downloading the 'mirror' file instead and then doing a repair install. Going to try it now and see if it works.

      • +1

        May be because of this..
"If you have used AVG Internet Security in the past, then you might not be able to install an extended trial and thus won’t be able to get this freebie. (If you haven’t used AVG Internet Security in the past, then you can get this freebie.)"

    • +2

Try from the mirror site instead. Quote from the email:

"Please note it appears that AVG is filtering downloads based on the country you are in; people in some countries are getting the correct AVG Internet Security 2014 download that has the 365 extended trial while other people in other countries are getting a 29 day trial version. When you download the installer, make sure the file has “avg_isct_x64_all_2014_4259a6848″ or “avg_isct_x86_all_2014_4259a6848″ in the name. If you get an installer that doesn’t have that in the name, that is the wrong file — get it from the download mirror to get the right file."

I just downloaded from the mirror site and got the file as mentioned above. Will give it a try to install

      • +1

Used the file from the mirror, did a repair and now have 374 days left on licence, so it does work - try that SamuraiPizzaCat.

        • Great! The download from mirror site and did the repair, it works.

  • Didn't get the Licence Key. ??

Since they started bundling and taking over my computer with every app I install with -AVG Search and Toolbars addons that sneakfully install on the side of other apps.
I now make a huge effort to avoid and warn many people of their bad business marketing tactics.

    AVG sucks.
    Avast is best IMO

    • +12

If you slow down on the next next next button mashing then you won't have toolbars and stuff

      • +1

uraha you need to understand that software that "sneaks" onto your computer should be just as easy to remove from your computer, unlike AVG crap is.

AVG stuff has never been good, its rarely been better than the viruses it purports to help with.

even when i was working in IT years ago it was seen as little more than a joke and not worth the money (free) it cost……

        • -1

I have had a difference experience - AVG found 2 legit instances of malware on my machine, whereas MS Security Essentials did not report any issues.
No disrespect, but your experience from years ago may be out of date. You'll actually find that AVG has performed very well in both detection and removal tests in recent times.

        • +2

I find it to be rubbish, now.

      • +4

So this is just your standard shareware, why is it a deal again?

        • -2

why is it a deal again?

caus customers are morons? at least that has been mostly my experience :)

      • +5

Doesn't change the fact that unrelated crap should be opt-in and not opt-out.

    • +1

Pretty much all software, paid and free try to install extra crap that they get paid to bundle. You have to opt out and sometimes they rig it so that if you don't install that you can't proceed with the installation.

Someone who's not savvy will definitely have it installed.

Sorry, but Avast is terrible. My computer nearly ground to a halt, so I ran Avast MANUALLY, along with Antimalware bytes and Spybot Search & Destroy. Together they found about 30 viruses on my system. ALL of these programs were installed from day 1 on a clean computer. So why should I have to run MANUAL scans daily to keep my computer safe!?

Fdisked and started clean again. Downloaded a trial of Kaspersky instead. It's warned me about pages that I've always visited - and that Avast never picked up. Unless I find a way to get it for free, it will be the first software I've paid for in over a decade. Didn't even slow my system down. It is, (to put it mildly), brilliant!

      • +4

AVG is not short for Avast - these are different products.

        • I was sure there was a post about Avast above mine… Maybe it was edited!? Anyway, what I say still stands, because Avast and AVG rate very similar in antivirus test reviews. It's true you get what you pay for.

        • It's true you get what you pay for.

Disagree here in regards to a/v, prices fluctuate wildly and should only be used as a variable in the decision.

          For example:

Product A may sell on publisher site for $100, and often available on eBay for $20.
Product B may sell on publisher site for $70, and sometimes available on eBay for $50.

          Which is the better a/v?

        • What I meant was free compared to… Kaspersky.

      • +2

Downloaded a trial of Kaspersky instead. It's warned me about pages that I've always visited - and that Avast never picked up.

How do you know these aren't false positives? These are just as bad to me.

        • -1

Because they're all named .bot .worm - I forget now - but I looked them all up to be sure. I couldn't believe a product (well, two really, since I'd switched from AVG to Avast) could be so pointless. Not useless - pointless. What's the point of an antivirus program that only finds threats when you run a manual scan. Hey, I used to recommend and defend them too.

        • He was talking about web pages he'd always visited. Unless he is going to webpages with .bot and .worm in their URL, I'm interested in knowing how he is sure those bad web pages are not false positives.

  • +4

AVG didn't prevent my registry from being corrupted from malware. Happened on two computers. Never again. They'd have to pay me.

    • +6

I know the feeling Fob, i had AVG a few years ago and my laptop was messing up. so switched to Norton and it instantly found 2 viruses. I'd give AVG an aggregate score of: Avoid At All Avenues

      • +6

        I wouldn't consider Norton better

        • I've seen Symantec Norton miss zero day vulnerabilities that AVG detected as suspicious in one place I worked that had a virus outbreak. This was a paid corporate product from Symantec that worked integrated with Altiris and was on 600 desktops and was a considerably expensive product.
From my experience, sure you will get better with paid maybe NOD32 or whatever. But for a free product AVG is one of the best. Better than the Comodo Free Antivirus which was recommended by many little support companies to clients.

And why do you guys get MALWARE on your computers?? I'm yet to meet anyone that's had a virus in recent times on their computer from something legitimate. Torrents, ISOs, Porn, SPAM links yada yada.

        • Um… I went to www.snipurl.com the other day - Kaspersky popped up a warning their site was usually reliable, but was currently infected with some worm.

      • +2

Yeah, switching from AVG to Norton is like trying to cure AIDS with Ebola or the plague.

  • Guys…how does this compare to Windows Essentials?

    • +5

if you're a seasoned pc user, you don't need this.

      • -6

But if you're a seasoned PC user, you wouldn't use MSE.

        • +5

          I use Common Sense 2014

      • AVG has picked up things on my PC during the trial that Essentials never had.

A few years ago, my IT manager asked me to trial 5 AntiViruses and write a quick report to be used as a business case to roll out the "advised" or "best" AV. This is a company of 30-50 people.

I worked on this for 4 weeks, and AVG was one of the AV'si trialled. I simply used a real virus and tracked each AV system's performance ranging from:

    -Resources (memory, CPU used)
-Detection rate (how quick it detects a threat)
    -Removal rate
-size of install and ease of removal
    -AV definition update success rate
    -Price
    -etc

Im sad to say, AVG did not pick up the Virus,…so it was useless.

im not going to market here and tell you which AV out-performed them all, but we should still thank the Poster for posting this, and curse AVG at the same time! lol

    • +1

I worked on this for 4 weeks

Did he have you typing it out on a typewriter?

      • no, but i also don't get the sarcasm point either?

Do you mean it took too long?

        • Yes.

        • -1

Perhaps it was a car of monitoring four weeks of regular office use?

    • +4

im not going to market here and tell you which AV out-performed them all

Considering it was a few years ago, all your findings (including AVG) are now irrelevant.

        • "Considering it was a few years ago, all your findings (including AVG) are now irrelevant."

Don't agree, companies actually base their milestones and strength/presence in the industry based on previous years' track records.

You see the flimsy AV companies (paid and free) never come out and state that, because reviewers usually shut them up and say 2 years ago you performed like crap. so it takes a really long time to get a good track record.

        • +2

You made no mention that you took into consideration a company/product past record with your unshared findings.

    • So which came out on top and for what reason?

    • +1

im not going to market here and tell you which AV out-performed them all

I'm going to guess that the one with the best detection rate was also the slowest and most annoying?

The cost of having the best security is a big one, and one that I'm not prepared to pay. I'm not referring to dollars either.

  • I posted a similar message a few months ago, but this has been updated for the december 2013 results:

Check out your anti virus real world test results from respected av comparatives right here, this is December 2013:

    http://chart.av-comparatives.org/chart1.php

    Green is good.

Maybe best to also read other info here from same site:

    http://www.av-comparatives.org/dynamic-tests/

    • They should show MSE as a benchmark on each graph to make it more enlightening for people (Basically everything is better). Might be time for me to make a change if Microsoft can't improve.

      • MSE is actually listed there…. it could be classified as a "benchmark" maybe… see the dotted line running right across the others at about 91.9% ?

Hover mouse over any of the others on the dotted line and MSE on windows 7 shows up at 91.9.

It has been up and down over 2013 if you check the previous charts.

        • Ah yes, Thanks.

  • Thanks Grog, its amazing my results 4 years ago, are still in line with the Dec 13 Results…

Turbodude, I said I wouldnt say much about my personal results, because they ARE personal, but the one that came on top was Kasperksy, which is pretty much what the charts say here 4 years ago

    • See my post above. I'm using a Kaspersky trial and it's been great.

  • Here's two other resources for AV testing FYI:
    http://www.av-test.org/en/tests/home-user/
    http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/latest_comparative/index
I'm happy with Security Essentials (or Defender in Windows 8) with the wonderful HitmanPro if there's a problem ;)
