Spend a $1k on a second hand TV that could be scratched and marked and only 12 weeks warranty.

    Yeah, nah.

    • Sony sell refurbs of a lot of products directly through grays. I doubt you would get a scratched screen but I agree the price isnt anywhere near low enough to be tempting.

Could be demo models, maybe someone bought it and changed their mind.Bear in mind they are refurbished by Sony so they would not re-sell if it doesn't pass their strict quality standards.Don't worry,I will be giving mine the good run through anyway.. otherwise i'll send it back.I dont mind a little scratch on the plastic if it saves me $300 as long as screen is immaculate.

    • My current 2008 Sony TV and 5.1 Amp/Speakers were purchased as refurbs from Sony via Grays in 2009.
Still going strong with no problems, defects or marks. Then again, they're made in Japan unlike the current crop.

    • not to says most are repaired, and with Sony's awful service centre (outsourced), you will be lucky if it can last more than one year.

  • Do these read ExFat on USB or just plain Fat? Any idea of mkv playback?

    • I will be running mine through my computer and xbmc so smart features or anything else doesn't phase me.

    • I have the previous generation Sony that plays all MKVs and exFAT. It won't do DTS-HD or DD-MA, however it does play 1080p video (obviously without sound). I use a HTPC anyway but the picture from the inbuilt decoder is still unbeatable and has the least motion judder (I assume it accurately matches refresh rate to frame rate of content). Looks superb with 24p content and Motionflow on (as blasphemous as that may sound to purists).

Bought tons of Sony stuff from Grays
    Couldn't be happier.

  • Saw one that looked very similar at Costco Ringwood the other day not sure if it was this model but the stand looked exactly like the one pictured, also 50". $849, someone might be able to check if they are shopping there.

    • You may have seen the Sony KDL50W670A at Costco which looks very similar but can't compare as it is only 50 hz compared to 120hz which is much better for watching sports as the picture is smoother and also has 3D which the other one does not.

  • This model sold for $1,443 in August 2013 at DSE
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/112296

  • $1256 at JB Hi-Fi + $36 nationwide delivery. Until 12th January JB have 10% off TVs, so $1130.40 + $36 = $1166.40

    • If they could drop it to $1100 may be better deal…. but I dunno…I have this thing about paying more than $1000 for a tv….IMHO

  • Shipping to WA $280 :-(

  • I'd rather get the Samsung 50" Full HD for $716.40 from JB or $715 from TGG but it's not a 3D TV however but hey at least it's brand new not a second hand refurbished unit. Who needs 3D any how it's a gimmick.

There's tonnes of different branded 50" tvs selling for around that price…but they are only 50 hz and this is 120hz.Without bragging Sony have the best inbuilt digital imaging processing technology for Tvs around. Regarding refurbished units, you may think you buy something new but that is not guaranteed because of the practices of many retailers. How do you know your 'new' tv has been used as a display model and then expertly cleaned and packaged in a new box?

      • More hz doesn't always mean better. And only 3 months warranty though on this refurb Sony TV that is a big negative. After the 3 months if it breaks down all repair costs are on you.

        • Sorry but I disagree.More hz does mean better Tvs.Tvs with more hz cost more as they cost more to manufacture..more components etc and more hz means smoother motion on the screen. In regards to warranty you are right,I will be purchasing the extra 1 year warranty which still makes it the cheapest deal for me..

        • I'm sure most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference between 50hz or 60hz to a 100hz to the naked eye. And besides FTA broadcasts at 50hz so it wouldn't make any difference in that case. Blu-rays are 24hz are they not. Blu-ray is smooth as on my Panasonic 60hz TV I can not tell the difference.

        • does that include seconds and refurbs or do they fall under the ebay category of bad luck buster.

        • Thats funny.I was comparing 2 tvs one next to the other at JB today. One was 50hz and the other was 100hz.They were both showing some camera panning scenes from the artic. I did notice slight jittering on the 50hz.On the 100hz model the same scene was smooth ,no jittering.Maybe my eyes are more discerning than normal….

100hz tvs generally have motion software that adds frames and makes panning smoother….some people like others dislike….if you like ( and I do ) buy 100hz tv .

        • Oh everyone can see the difference, it's just most people don't care…
At least thats the impression i get everytime i point out the difference side by side…

        • It's not that much that people don't care….. It's the price difference between a 50 hz and a 100 hz TV that people care about

        • Then again there are tv's that mimick 100 hz by blinking the backlight at that rate but I don't think they are on par with true constant 100 hz tv's..

        • Here's a fairly accurate analogy of LCD/LED TV motion compensation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Emperor%27s_New_Clothes :)

        • There is more to it. It becomes quite obvious on some formats / compression. Interesting to watch 2 similar displays, one 50, one 100 work with the same material

  • refurbished TV maybe also fautly TV which has been repaired.

Do NOT trust and/or deal with Graysonline!
I am still battling them (thru PayPal) to get something for sending me an inferior item.
Graysonline is a SCAM and government must do something to stop this SCAM.
    (Hear hear)

    • Can you ellaborate on your experience as I know of plenty of people happy with their graysonline purchases?

… Moral of the story, get extra warranty. Also as mentioned before a TV should last say 5 years so if it dies in around 3, there are new laws that protect consumers in this case. Make sure you keep receipts.

      • No, you've saved some money by buying a refurb, and it's more than likely a used item, therefore you can't expect it to last as long as a new unit.

For a TV, depending when the model was released and if it was one of the first batches, the unit you buy could be 2-3 years old when you receive it. That is already pushing heading toward the boundary of reasonableness for a TV to last, once you factor in the money you've saved compared to new you've easily reached that boundary.

        • You have a point, but as I Stated not all refurbished means repaired, they may be just change of mind or minor imperfections and repackaged. Look …to end this I have to say that even with new purchases it is pot luck. Your new TV may last you 2 years whereas a refurbished 5 years OR the other way around vice versa. The only thing that can protect you is warranty and Australian law. Regarding this TV it is not an old model but released about 7 months ago.

  • been there done that.
used to be a delivery truck for graysonline.
you can't imagine how many lot's of Tv i used to take to get them fixed everyday
Not a fan of graysonline personally.

    • True… But then again they sell a heck of a lot of electronics products. All electrical retailers end up having to repair items. Considering that I'd be curious to know their repair ratio on all the things grays online sell.

  • Can't believe they've raised there commission again, now 17.5% farrrrk you Graysonline with your dodgy products.

    • Just an update, guys. Received Tv yesterday. TV in impeccable condition, looks new. Also couldn't be happier with the picture… Superb
