Pretty expensive for a product thats expiring this week.

Would rather grab the 18 pack from Dan Murphys ($2.88 a can). 22c a can saving isn't worth the potential flavour issue IMO.

    • +1

Whiskey doesn't expire and soft drink typically lasts 6-9 months past the expiry date (www.eatbydate.com).

Only 3 stores in Melbourne means the $7 delivery makes it more expensive than Dan Murphys.

Rep can you do any better?

      • Sorry, I wish I could help you
If you aren't near any of my stores I am afraid the delivery fee is required
because at this low price there is no room for waiving the fee
but then my delivery fee is less than Dans ($10)
Of course the same delivery issue applies if you aren't near Dans, not everyone is

Of course as soon as Dan puts their price back to $77.99
then I will be cheaper (per 24 cans) even with delivery fee added in

In what way does the product expire this week
Its on special for the whole week
The price is the cheapest Jim Beam per can @ 2.66 in Australia

      • Ah ok, it's the way you've worded the "tweet" on the page you've linked

        Cheaper Than Dan @CheaperThanDan
        $39.99 Jim Beam Cans 15pks
        Exp 10/01/2014
        [email protected]

It kinda reads like the expiry on the cans is 10th of Jan, but I now take it that the deal/offer expires on that date.

  • +7

Expiration date should be stated in deal details above as some may miss it when purchasing.

I used the standard OZBargain Expiration tool in my post
and it is also on the website
If this isn't sufficient then I will also put in headings in future
just seemed redundant if OzBargain already provide an expiry date
and automatically flag an offer as expired when the date is reached

See my post here which explains the confusion.

  • -3

Awesome, thanks for the post, I will now never consider buying from this site.

    • +1

Not to mention a website that looks like it was put together in 5 minutes…

    • +2

      why?

Is all you want a shmick website?
      This is OZBARGAIN
I am offering the best everyday prices on over 4000 products

  • -4

    Sounds more like cheaterthadan.

    • +2

      and so are the prices

again I am staggered to see that you care more about the website than the prices

      This is OZbargain

      • +1

Glad to see some of the negative bandwagonners getting unpublished. These are the sorts of customers you DON'T want anyway!

        • +1

          thanks wizzlesticks

I have found it extraordinary that on a site like OzBargain
there is an active community of people who just don't want
to believe they have been misdirected by Woolworths

I stand by the fact our overall pricing is better than anyone else on the web

If we, as a medium sized liquor business doing 0.2% of the business Woolworths does,
can run over 4000 prices lower than them then just how much have they been gouging
Woolworths runs on a basis of about 60 core products that they actively match
and the rest are no cheaper than any reasonable medium sized liquor store can match
and they don't automatically match prices on those products unless you ask for it
even though that information is out there and readily available

PS: I do want those customers, because the converted always become The True Believers!

2 of the pickup locations are Cellarbrations and 1 is a Liquorland. So what's the relationship between Cheaperthandan and these bottle shops?

    • +1

they are all Cellarbrations stores (why do you think one is liquorland?)
I own all three stores and www.cheaperthandan.com

Cellarbrations are independently owned (not a franchise)
We are what is known as a Banner Group

To be part of the banner we must stock the Core Range & Promotional Range and anything else is our choice
Prices for these products cannot be HIGHER than the agreed price but we can go lower (as I do)
(which is OK by ASIC because it sets a maximum consumer price not minimum)

The website is a basic text/php site at the moment but thats because
I didn't realise that people seem more to care about the style rather than prices
      especially on OzBargain (go figure)

We hope to be bringing other associate stores in to the network to broaden the free delivery/pickup area

Sometimes having a "craptastic" website sets you apart from the competition… e.g. www.msy.com.au

        • muncan

I certainly haven't spent any money on the website I grant you
(I save all that money to give great prices)

but MSY and I share some similar philosophies in regards pricing and costs

keep the site basic and the prices low.. you got my vote!

      • +1

        Very cool.

Whereis says the Mordialloc location is a Liquorland.

        • +1

I think the reference to WhereIs says it all!
I have been a Cellarbrations for 12 years

        • also I just realised Whereis takes their data from yellowpages

Since I in effect get a free yellowpages ad
(any yellowpages search for Liquor Mordialloc will still bring up my phone number)
I have never bothered to advise them of the change
and both the Liquorland and Cellarbrations entries always come up on top as well

    Tough crowd.

The wine prices are very sharp across the board. Margin has been reduced to a really low % on most items - you don't have to wait for the '30% off' sales at BWS or Liquorland - also a very good range. Well done OP - I will purchase.

    • Thanks Texanboy

that's our aim to give a fair price

  • Do have this website set up so you can go to Dans to price beat and then resell as many small retailers do?

    • The website is set up to give you the consumer the best prices we are able to give

We are not a small retailer, we have three medium sized liquor outlets
This puts us in the top 10% of independent liquor retailers in Australia
plus with the backing of the biggest independent liquor wholesaler (MetCash)
and strong relationships with the brand owners we are well placed to offer these prices

We will never claim that every price on our website is the cheapest ALL the time (it isn't possible)
but generally at least 4000 of the 4200 or so products is the cheapest everyday price
it is impossible to monitor every price at every other store every day
thats why even Woolworths (AKA Dans/BWS) or Wesfarmers (AKA 1stChoice/VintageCellars/Liquorland)
make the consumer tell them they have found a cheaper price unless it is nationally advertised

and yes many of the small mum/dad stores do make the mistake of buying from competitors
(which is illogical, why feed the beast)

      regards
      gregF

  • I work at Dans and many small retailers like yourself shop with us every single day and resell. Why have your website name cheaperthandan……when some of your everyday prices aren't???

    • +1

you are thinking about mum/dad stores that probably turn over $5K/$7K per week
we are in the top 10% of independent retailers
There are many Dan's stores that don't match our turnover
(and with 25 years in Liquor I know this to be fact)

You assume that we are alluding to Dan Murphy in our name but no such claim has been made
other than certainly 4000+ products are cheaper than Woolworths prices
We are not the store with a questionable price guarantee, I will leave that to others
Surely EVERY Woolworths price should be automatically reduced to be lower than ours
all our prices are published on the web and trivial to extract and download
it would be too convenient to not make the consumer challenge for a lower price
of course the final eventuality would be to drive you down to giving everything away
so pragmatically this isn't going to happen is it

Wise up, you work for a company that sends 90% of every dollar spent in its stores O/S
I own a company that retains 80% of every dollar spent in the local community

  • +1

Good Luck, wish you all the best!!

  • It's a great idea, but a lot of the products I would normally buy (decent single malts/ cheaper blended scotch / generic macro slabs) are actually more expensive than the walk in price at Dans on an average basis. Lagavulin 16yo, Macallan 12yo and Laphroaig were all about 5 cents cheaper. Little creatures is cheaper at Dan's. I'm not trying to be rude or anything, i'm just commenting as a potential customer and ahem, alchohol enthusiast

    • +3

My price on all Little Creatures varieties is cheaper I just double checked
Lagavulin 16yo, Macallan 12yo, Laphroaig 10yo all Cheaper as well
Prices for Dans can store dependent so it could be cheaper at a particular store
although I used Melbourne and Sydney as locations and we were cheaper in both cases

quote: but a lot of the products I would normally buy (decent single malts/ cheaper blended scotch / generic macro slabs)

Honestly I think you are trolling
      I have 140+ Whiskies Cheaper
      I have 400+ Beers Cheaper
and the few products you highlighted we are cheaper Using Vic Boronia as the base
and I note from another post that you chose to support Woolworths and send your money O/S
rather than go to the store that actually made the running on price.

To me that is the biggest sin of all, Woolworths use price matching so as not to lead prices down
but only to follow where others have already dared go. It is a cheap and weak form of retail
but they know that enough sheep will follow along with it without seeing it for what it is,
they actively run 60 or so main products as lead to make you believe every price is low
yet I have 4000 odd products that prove otherwise
